Through the magic of filmmaking, the market on the SW corner of Avenue A and Sixth Street has been dressed to look like a former tenant — Benny's Burritos.
As EVG regular Creature notes, the details include the door sticker address...
As we've noted, the Darren Aronofsky-helmed crime thriller "Caught Stealing," starring Austin Butler, has been giving parts of Avenue A a 1990s look during the shoot, which is expected to last through Friday.
Benny's shut down here on Nov. 29, 2014, after 27 years in business. The Benny's to-go spot next door closed in February 2015. (The Benny's signage stayed on the vacant space for years after the closure.)
P.S.
Aronofsky: I need a gross, gritty, drug-infested, hell scape of a neighborhood that resembles the shambles of 90s nyc while also depicting a dark, dangerous post-apocalyptic disaster zone that has been abandoned by city officials and local cops.
ReplyDeleteNYC: How about the East Village?
ReplyDeleteFilm crew stopped me so I wouldn't walk through a shot. I almost said "I worked on this block in the 90s. I'm a period piece!"
Wow Benny's Burritos I miss that place so much as it was my regular and the best Mexican restaurant in the LES/EV. I used to always order a Chicken Burrito with a cold Sol Mexican beer. I wish they would reopen for real.
ReplyDeleteNothing against the bodega, but I wish this was real!
ReplyDeleteWhat was the guy’s name who would panhandle from customers sitting outside at Benny’s? I mean the guy who always had a bandana headband holding an enormous tree branch to his head.
ReplyDelete7:29 Sol Cerveza! wow now that is a name I haven't remembered for years.
