What happened to the blue mail collection box outside the Tompkins Square Post Office?

Photos and reporting by Stacie Joy

If you've noticed the blue USPS mailbox missing from outside the Tompkins Square Post Office on Third Street between Avenues B and C, you're not alone.

According to postal employees, the box was removed last week "due to vandalism."

"This is a rough neighborhood," one employee said, explaining that people kept gluing the box shut. There were also instances of "fraudulent mail removal events," they noted.

As for whether the mailbox will return: "I don't know, but I don’t think so," the employee added.

    1. I did. I’ve been here since 1978. I’ve seen it all. And yet it still makes me really mad that we can’t have a stinking mailbox on hand when and where we need them.

  3. Sadly, the area has gotten much worse in the past few years. We need to let cops do their jobs - that's the problem. The criminals are allowed to run wild.

  4. That’s frustrating :( USPS says there are also collection boxes on 4th & C and 3rd & B? This one’s always been my go-to

  5. Numerous mail collection boxes outside post offices throughout NYC have been removed, primarily because mail is stolen from them, using glue and other means. Never ever mail checks in those boxes, or those on street corners. Really Bad Things are likely to happen if you do!
