Brooklyn Dumpling Shop closes flagship East Village location

Photos by Steven

Brooklyn Dumpling Shop has shut down its flagship location on the southwest corner of St. Mark's Place and First Avenue.

Door signage for patrons notes "we're closing this chapter and turning the volume WAY up — now coast to coast."
The expanding brand has outposts in cities including Philadelphia, Orlando, Dallas, Vancouver... not to mention at Yankee Stadium and Madison Square Garden... and in grocery freezers. You can also find them on the Upper East Side and, soon, actually in Brooklyn.

This location opened in May 2021 after a few pandemic-related delays. (The signage first arrived on March 20, 2020.)

Brooklyn Dumpling Shop featured an automat-type arrangement serving more than 30 varieties of dumplings and spring rolls around the clock.

  1. Never could warm to it. I like dumplings, wish there were more in the neighborhood but this just wasn't my spot.

  2. Early in the pandemic, the owner wouldn't let the staff wear masks. Maybe he thought it important that they cough on the dumplings?

  5. Won’t be missed. Surprised they lasted this long. We didn’t forget

  6. Should maybe have named it "EV Dumplings". The whole "Brooklyn Authenticity" brag is getting a bit stale.

  7. Admittedly, I bemoan the fact that "Brooklyn Dumpling Shop" may leave the impression nationwide that we think these are solid dumplings.

  8. I wanted to like that place but after the shit the owner pulled in covid... going full hog anti vax and "come at me government" about it... wasn't going to forget that

    1. So all the rules like 6 feet distancing, ineffective cloth masks, wildly varying rules about congregating (not in a restaurant, church but to protest a-ok) which were all proven to be ridiculous and his position to be accurate you didn’t like so we’re all dancing on this grave. I remember when they first opened they handed out free samples, owner or manager who was doing so seemed like a nice guy, I’ll never understand celebrating people losing their jobs or business.

    2. doing the most basic stuff to protect 1. your own employees and 2. your customers was not a "oh it didn't work so it was invalid". Turns out if you actually enforced that stuff it did work. Get outta here with that anti vax sympathizer shit. You forget very quickly how bad it started in NYC. Taking that stance at that time was some self centered lowlife shit.

  9. Lhasa at 1st Avenue and 11th is the place for dumplings. It is the EV outpost of the great Queens restaurant known for excellent Tibetan food.

    1. Gotta go check Lhasa out! Nan Xiang Xiao Long Bao and Mimi Cheng make some pretty good dumplings too.

  11. Went there once. It wasn't that good. Dumplings were dry.

  12. I remember when it first opened the reviews were not good so I never went. As per the comments on this thread, I didn't miss anything.

    1. Foot Gears's dumplings weren't so good, either, tbh. Tasted like shoe leather.

    2. The dumplings and the shoes had a similar taste.

  14. Was never a fan. Crappy food. And I saw one of their workers come from the back, go out to SMP and piss between two cars. Sanitary? Classy? LOL.

  15. The food was literally the worst I've had in the city in my entire life

  16. Aren’t there a ton of dumpling shops all
Over st marks 2/3ave? I was thinking about it the other day and had no idea how I’d decide which to go to!

  17. They opened a branch in my hometown, a college town. Even college students wouldn't eat them despite the desperate attempt to wrap them in supposed Brooklyn cool. They closed in about a year

  18. Beyond the terrible food, they were just bad neighbors. I’m very glad to see them go. Definitely miss Foot Gear - those guys were great. I hope something wonderful comes into the space, there’s so much opportunity on that corner - takes a pretty poor business to not make a go
