If you've walked through Tompkins Square Park in the past week, you may have noticed a long row of new black metal enclosures lining a fence in the center.
We're told that the enclosures are designed to keep garbage out of sight while helping reduce odors and limit access for rats and other pests.
The bins are part of the city's broader containerization efforts, which replace exposed trash bags with enclosed waste storage. (They are currently locked and empty ... no word on when they will be put into use.)
Whether they'll make a noticeable dent in the park's persistent rat population remains to be seen, though keeping trash contained would seem like a step in the right direction...
