The two community groups involved in the planned affordable housing development on the 9th Precinct parking lot are hosting a town hall tomorrow evening focused on community land trusts.This Land Is Ours Community Land Trust and the Cooper Square Committee will hold the event at Middle Collegiate Church, 50 E. Seventh St. between First Avenue and Second Avenue, starting at 6 p.m. tomorrow (Wednesday, Sept. 23).
Steve Herrick, executive director of the Cooper Square Committee, said the main focus will be explaining what a community land trust is and how people can get involved in the CLT movement. The groups also have several projects in predevelopment involving the land trust.
The proposed development on the city-owned lot at 324 E. Fifth St. will come up, though Herrick said it will only be discussed briefly.
As we reported in July, the proposed development, called The Aurea, is expected to include approximately 131 income-restricted apartments, a senior center, community space and replacement parking for the NYPD. The development team includes This Land Is Ours, Cooper Square Committee, Spatial Equity and Housing Works.
The project's final height has not been determined and will depend in part on a future rezoning of the site.
Hopefully the group can advocate to nix the parking spaces replacing the….parking spaces.

ReplyDeleteUnprotected façades date from the 1800s to 1905, roughly 25 ft wide and 4—6 stories. We must save the interior Village from a density-first model, and advance a more thoughtful, human, and livable future.
An East Village (or a Manhattan) filled with no one but the uber rich and a wealthy professional class they keep as retainers will not be thoughtful, human, or livable, and we're heading there fast.
DeleteDo you have information from CSC that confirms that they will be discussing the housing plan at the police parking lot? The flyer that I got from CSC says that they are hosting a workshop on Community Land Trusts. It says nothing about 324 E. 5th. Someone has been going on sticking up posters claiming that this is a meeting about Aurea. I was at CSC yesterday and asked them if they were have a meeting about the 5th St building and they said no. It would be great if you could confirm one way or another.
