At the East Village Meat Market for Pierogi Day

Photos by Stacie Joy

We stopped by the East Village Meat Market on Saturday for its annual Pierogi Day.

The longtime Ukrainian market at 139 Second Ave., between St. Mark's Place and Ninth Street, offered five varieties of pierogi for $1 each as part of its annual thank-you to customers.

The shop has been a neighborhood fixture at this address since 1972.

Here are the owners, Olha and Andrew Ilnicki...
... and their son Roman...

  2. Wonderful store! You can’t really tell from the photo but I recall co-owner Andrew as having lovely blue eyes.

  3. I’ve been shopping there since before Andrew (or I) had a single gray hair! Love that place.

  4. Love Baczynsky! I shop there every Saturday morning for their delicious array of traditional Ukrainian food. They were part of a small number of stores that stayed open and survived Covid. They were a lifeline to normalcy during that stressful time. Carry on!
