[Updated] Japanese grocery Yamadaya coming to Avenue A

Updated: This is NOT the Budget Mart storefront, as previously reported. We apologize for the error.

A new tenant is coming to 37 Avenue A, between Second and Third Streets.

Signage for Yamadaya, a Japanese grocery store with several Manhattan locations, has arrived at the long-vacant storefront.

Yamadaya sells Japanese groceries, snacks, sweets, household goods and beauty products. (The Yamadaya website lists a fall opening here.)

No word on an opening date.

  1. Oh, this is great news! I love the Japanese stores on Sixth Avenue and it’ll be nice to have one closer to home.

  4. I was sort of harboring a hope that this would be the new Two Boots location (if I have it right, this is the old Two Boots spot). But this sounds like a good store to have as well. I look forward to checking it out.

  5. I miss Sunrise Mart too, but Yamada on 6th Ave is great. Nice addition to the neighborhood, I can't wait for them to open!

  6. Was also hoping this would be the new Two Boots location--but I'll take a Japanese market so close to home! Miss Sunrise Mart.

  7. I miss Sunrise Mart as well and once in a while I make the trip to Japan Village in Brooklyn where the large Sunrise Mart is located; it is only 20-25 minutes away using the express N train. If I need anything in a jiffy then I go to Dainobu on 6th. Avenue

  8. Oooh, this is a big win! The Japanese grocery on Second Ave. is too far away for random visits and the one on Grand is nice but pretty small.

  9. A - also bummed Two Boots isn't heading to the OG home. IMissAllThatRedPleather!

B - glad SOMETHINGS finally going into no. 33 (been vacent - minus nycha construction offices - since Rafik moved to the NW corner years ago, no?)

C - sucks to hear the Budget Mart space is on the market - it's a great counterpart to H Brickman & Sons and Essex Card Shop for all my detritus needs. Where are the good cheep (brick and mortar in the hood) everyday t-shirt & undie spots these days??

D - as long as we're on the block, anybody know what's going down in the old High Vibe spot (138 E. 3rd St.)? The green signs gone, it's newly papered up, and I think I saw some folks going in and out a couplefew weeks back...
