New trees, a rain garden and a mini-forest taking root in Tompkins Square Park

Photos and reporting by Stacie Joy

Tree-mendous news out of Tompkins Square Park.

A burst of planting activity continues in the park, with more to come over the next few weeks.

According to Parks employees, 10 new trees were planted Wednesday alone around Tompkins, with many more expected before the work wraps up later on October.
Crews and volunteers also planted a new rain garden near the dog run, filling the area with native plants.
Elsewhere in Tompkins, a mini-forest is coming to the Seventh Street side between Avenue A and Avenue B.
The work also includes improvements to sidewalk tree pits and planting beds, with old stones being removed, beds refilled and new stones installed. Crews are also performing tree maintenance.
Additional trees are expected along Avenue B between Seventh and Eighth streets.

Expanded tree beds, hurrah! So good for the trees!

They're relocating the cobblestones to tree pits on Ave A

Right! About time the city paid us a little attention to our beloved park!

Yes to the mini forest by the playground. The kids will love it!

This is lovely but would be nice to see some asphalt work too. The walking paths have been neglected for years and it’s really hard for the disabled, elderly and strollers.

What a gift. The park is becoming a park again and not just a dog run for the self-indulgent dog owners who destroyed so much of the vegetation.

And hopefully the hills will deter dog owners looking for lap-running opportunities for fur children who are too good for the regular dog park

I wish the park would bring back Wigstock!

Somehow It’s never included in the “scope” of any project…

I love more plants but this seems silly to me when there are so many fenced areas of the park that are currently under planted and under maintained. Why not plant in existing areas and do more enforcement off inappropriately off leash dogs?
