I was at the community board meeting. ...@Gothamist

I was at the community board meeting. The owners of The Wayland and Good Night Sonny want to open another bar across the street on Avenue C, one half of the nuisance known as Babel.

The block is the worst bar douchebag party strip in the East Village. There is not supposed to be bar after bar after bar based on the SLA 500 ft. rule, but when there is no opposition that's what happens. Fortunately, residents did come out this time, and that's the key.

Babel is selling it's license to Wayland owners. It's called a transfer and it isn't automatic, especially if there is opposition and past complaints about a venue, which there was (Babel). It's not just that the community board doesn't follow the rules, it's that they don't even know them. Residents who live in the building above Babel were there. They told stories about how difficult it was to continue living there because of the bar scene, which includes The Wayland. One of the women in opposition said that she would have to leave if this new bar was approved.

The Wayland is a nuisance. Expensive cocktails, open doors, loud and they admit it. This is what they said.

"We love Avenue C, and there's not really a nice local bar there anymore that doesn’t have the pressure of The Wayland," Ceraso said. "The Wayland's a fantastic bar, but its got a cocktail list, live music, and it does get crowded."

So they are trying to acquire yet another asset by saying that this new venue will be less of a nuissance than The Wayland, and the community board supports them. The owners of of The Wayland said they were big supporters of the community gardens and that they gave to the Bowery Mission.

I don't think that applicants should be allowed to use charity in their argument and I think that the CB 3 SLA vote records should be posted and saved. They are not even saved.

Community board members think that a transfer or sale of assets is automatic when it is not, so then they approve everything with stipulations. They are wrong. If there are complaints and there is opposition from people in the building above and surrounding buildings, and the place is a problem then-no transfer. They are rewarding Babel and The Wayland and residents get pushed to the margins.

The businesses on this block have preyed on long time residents, as they try to hang on to their apartments, which have been taken over by patrons of the establishments that are forcing them out.

The Wayland owners brought a petition of 81 signitures in their support. The people who support them are the same people who have taken over the apartments on Avenue C.

Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5694390946037511355.post-24599018351516654112015-10-31T11:21:10.814-04:002015-10-31T11:21:10.814-04:00@Reverend Billy
We would like a boycott of the T...@Reverend Billy

We would like a boycott of the Tompkins Square Park Halloween Dog Parade as it is marketing the East Village. There has been some opposition in past years so this year it expanded. 10,000 people from all around the world descended on the East Village. We feel that the marketing fuels developers. How is this a good thig? In addition Purina/ Nestle is the sponsor.

"Why Nestle is one of the most hated companies in the world

MAY 19, 2015

Child labor, unethical promotion, manipulating uneducated mothers, pollution, price fixing and mislabeling – those are not words you want to see associated with your company. Nestle is the world’s largest foodstuff company, and it has a history that would make even hardcore industrialists shiver."

Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5694390946037511355.post-67373705276457169542015-10-30T12:18:37.238-04:002015-10-30T12:18:37.238-04:00Nice shot Grant!
