The...@Anonymous: Well that's sort-of the point. There is just one brand of item on everything, instead of 20 like a Food Emporium. The costs of doing this are lower. Hence savings passed onto the consumers, who don't mind if most of the things in the store are "mediocre", if everything is just being cooked or used in a no-frills way anyway.

I don't have to buy anything at TJ's that I do not want to buy (if I want the "good" olive oil I can get it somewhere else), but there are still crazy lines in all of the stores for checkout so I guess they have a market. Meanwhile every Gristedes/Morton Williams/D'Agostino is empty all the time. And these other chains, their grocery items are a panoply of mediocre expensive options. Associated has not been different.

It comes back, though, to the point where people in the neighborhood were belaboring the point that losing the Associated market was going to create a humanity crisis of people who would just not be able to buy groceries at all with the new retail setup on 14th Street. You will likely have to change brands if you switch from Associated to TJ, but you likely won't have to pay more & you won't suffer a drop in quality that you would notice. Note that the quality control dates on all the TJs items are pretty accurate, in the sense that things normally don't spoil sooner than the sell-by dates on the packages. Beyond that... literally every grocer in New York has this problem where things don't last as long as they would have if you got it from a Shop Rite in New Jersey. Well, there's always moving to New Jersey...
Brian Vanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03368272923390455205noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5694390946037511355.post-8312028682711179972019-11-04T11:56:43.950-05:002019-11-04T11:56:43.950-05:0090% of the staff at associated are absolutely HORR...90% of the staff at associated are absolutely HORRIBLE (started at the TOP---with the TOTALLY incompetent manager that allowed the staff to despise/objectify the customer)---GOOD RIDDANCE TO ALL OF THEM :(afbphttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17342511797399979293noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5694390946037511355.post-51331399219439536422019-11-04T10:56:50.083-05:002019-11-04T10:56:50.083-05:00I like Trader Joe's. They're great for reasonably priced quality packaged goods; their produce, on the other hand, is mediocre, goes moldy in a weird way, and just about everything is packaged in plastic. Thinking about this in light of the closing of Associated, TJ's only sells one brand of an item, really; there is limited choice.
