Here comes the fear again: 505 E. 12th St. back on the market

A reader noted that a For Sale sign went up 505 E. 12th St. (the former Mundial and Totem space) ... which, perhaps, means the new bar on May's CB3/SLA meeting is no longer a go... the "corp to be formed" here was not approved by the CB3/SLA committee...

Now someone else can take a shot here... According to the listing:

BEAUTIFUL EAST VILLAGE LOUNGE WITH KITCHEN
Approx. 1400 sq ft plus 500 sq ftS back yard, 30 foot store front, and full basement

Price: $140,000
Rent: $7,500
10-year lease

As a reader/nearby resident has said about this space: "Another bar opening up in the Mundial space is my worst nightmare."

Previously on EV Grieve:

Last night's CB3 recap: Residents 1, Bar Owners 0

12th and A gets the brown paper treatment

Meanwhile, on the corner of 12th Street and Avenue A, paper has gone up in the windows of the long-dormant space that once housed the Raven...

Unfortunately, we don't have any more details on what's going in here... However, the folks behind the proposed Mexican cantina (El Camion) here have moved on, sources tell us. As you may recall, the El Camion brass gave very little notice about an open house on a Friday night at 5 back in May. The CB3/SLA committee later denied their request for a liquor license transfer.

All is well at Northern Spy

The folks at Northern Spy sent us a tweet earlier today in response to our report this morning. Per the tweet: "all's well, our peeps handled it as best they could considering the guy's state." I asked if anyone there knew the man who was arrested. Northern Spy said that it was random, though the man does live nearby.

Wild scene in front of Northern Spy this morning

A reader notes a disturbance this morning on 12th Street between Avenue A and Avenue B... in front of Northern Spy, where a man in a gray t-shirt and shorts was trying to enter the restaurant.

Per the reader, who also provided the photos: "Some of the guys from the restaurant were trying to restrain him and kept telling him to get down on the ground, but he wasn't listening, and he was even trying to open the door to get into the restaurant. All in all, it was about six guys trying to get control over him."

The man's t-shirt was torn to shreds by the time police arrived. The man was placed inside an ambulance. "I suspect the guy was either drunk or mentally ill."

Pigs still flying on Second Avenue

Well! Here's a pleasant surprise... A few weeks back, a tipster reported that the building at 12th Street and Second Avenue would get a makeover, meaning the loss of the pigs...

However! As the work progresses, it appears that these pigs are safe...

Because you know what usually happens to pigs around here (at least on Avenue C) ...

"Another noisy bar" slated for Avenue A; actually, make that several noisy bars, perhaps

Unfortunately, I couldn't make the latest noisy bar community meeting on 13th Street last night...

I went to the one last summer in which the Superdive manager attended. I still recall the longtime resident who said that "this isn't a neighborhood that 'sits on its ass' and looked at the Destination and Superdive reps and said that they are officially 'put on notice.'"

If anyone attended last night and wants to pass along details... I'd appreciate it...

Anyway, there's plenty of reason for concern. Take a look at this month's CB3/SLA slate on Monday ... all sorts of activity on the northern stretch of Avenue A:

Alterations/Transfers/Upgrades
-- El Camion (El Camion III Inc), 194 Ave A (trans/op) (The Raven)
-- Percy's (Steelbar 180 Inc), 210-212 Ave A (trans/op) (Al Diwan)
-- MBM Lounge Inc, 212 Ave A (trans/op) (Forbidden City)
-- Corp to be Formed, 503-505 E 12th St (trans/op) (I'll have more on this one - the former Mundial and Totem)

Plus, for good measure, the popular Westville at 11th Street is applying for a sidewalk cafe license...

Meanwhile, as I posted on Saturday, there was an "open house" this past Friday at 5 p.m. (!) for the new bar/restaurant going in the old Raven space at 12th Street and Avenue A...

I've asked several neighborhood power brokers about the open house... and no one knew a thing about it. Jill at Blah Blog Blah, who has chronicled many of the noise-related issues in this part of the neighborhood, said that she walked by Friday at 5:30 p.m. "I ... didn't notice any event."

And she echoed my thoughts. "Come to think of it, what an inconvenient time to have an open house, right when most of us working stiffs are still commuting. Maybe [the owner] thought he'd get his support from the students who live in the building."

Observations from last night's noisy bars meeting

Another nightmare bar for 505 E. 12th St.?

We've talked with several residents in the past about problems stemming from the former bars at 505 E. 12th St.... Mundial and before that, Totem... So a few people are anxious now that the following has appeared on Monday's CB3/SLA docket:

Corp to be Formed, 503-505 E. 12th St. (trans/op)

I was never in Mundial or Totem. Here's the Totem writeup from Shecky's to show you what you missed:

Totem: Join the ultra-hip Williamsburg and NYU kiddies as they jungle boogie ‘til they can’t boogie no more at this Alphaville hotspot. Prance without dancing (as it’s legally prohibited) around the totem poles, saunter over to the lounge area, or plant yourself in the outdoor garden. Featured drinks include the house special Totem Pole and the slightly less subtle Beaver Juice. Note: the menu literally warns patrons to mind the alcohol content of these drinks, thus reflecting a certain acknowledgement of attracting a young clientele. The Totem rocks throughout the week but occasional theme nights, like the cyclical Full Moon Party, can be a howl.

We don't know just yet what this "corp to be formed" is going to be bringing to the block. At this point, any new venture is bound to cause high anxiety for neighbors.

Over here at 407 E. 12th St. between Avenue A and First Avenue, there's a new listing for a condo penthouse for the terrace lover in you. (And you.) Sure, I could talk it up, but let's have the listing do that...

Northern Spy expands

Six-month-old Northern Spy on 12th Street was closed on Monday and Tuesday for some renovations...

The restaurant reopened last night... and team Spy have simply removed the cases that sold to-go items in the back and replaced them with a few more tables... makes sense, given that the place seems to be getting more popular...

More info via the Northern Spy Web site.

Scenes from last night's accident on 12th Street via Twitter

Last evening, an EV Grieve reader passed along an e-mail saying there had been an accident on 12th Street near First Avenue: "5 folks hit according to cops nobody seriously injured." (I was busy at the time looking for models on Avenue A.)

East Village resident Chris O'Leary (who also blogs, blogs about beer and tweets) tracked down what happened via Twitter....: "According to the cop outside, it was a drunk driver who fled on foot. Happened around 6pm."

And Chris tracked down these photos at the scene from Twitter users....

New bar slated for 12th Street and Avenue A

In March 2006, the building housing the Raven on the northeast corner of Avenue A at 12th Street was shuttered by a devastating fire... The building has been renovated, and the storefront (pictured below last fall) has been on the market for quite some time ...

On March 15, the Raven appears on the CB3 SLA docket (No. 15 and No. 16 on the agenda) in the Alterations/Transfers/Upgrades category. The docket reads:

El Camion (El Camion III Inc), 194 Ave A (trans/op) (The Raven)

Meanwhile, according to the real-estate listing...

Approx. 1500 sq ft vanilla box with liquor license, large wraparound storefront, basement (with dedicated internal staircase), and possible sidewalk cafe.

Price: $90,000
Rent: $10,500
10-year lease

I'm curious to see how this one plays out... there have already been numerous complaints about the bar scene on the upper stretch of Avenue A... Jill has noted this... and she took this shot in front of Drop Off Service last summer, for an idea of what life is usually like here on the weekends...

New sidewalk cafe for Table 12

And in keeping with this 12th Street and Avenue A theme... on Feb. 9, the CB3/SLA approved a sidewalk cafe for Table 12 on the southeast corner. The sidewalk cafe must shut down at 10 p.m.... and they can set up again at 8 a.m. The majority of the 28 seats will be on 12th Street.

Alexander Wang launches ad campaign for his new anti-itch powder

On 12th Street at Third Avenue.

Oh! It's his T line. Per BlackBook:

[H]e's making quite a statement with his first-ever ad campaign for his lower-priced line T. "The energy was much more appropriate for something like guerrilla marketing than anything too proper or formal," Wang says of the ads which will only grace NYC sidewalks, not the pages of the magazines currently stocked at your local newsstand.
