Newsflash: It doesn't take long to demolish a gas station

The workers made pretty quick, uh, work today of the former BP (and Gulf!) station at 24 Second Ave. at East First Street…



We're going back later to nab some of those cinder blocks to build a kiln … and maybe rummage around for any leftover bagels (I recall them having a toaster…)

In case you missed this from yesterday, we got the first look at the new 10-story retail-residential complex that will call this corner home.

The demolition work got underway yesterday (officially anyway) at 24 Second Ave. at East First Street.

As if that's not newsy enough, the city OK'd the plans (per DOB records) on Monday for the new 10-story retail-residential complex that will call this corner home. (Pretty speedy turnaround for the city. Reps for the developer only filed the plans in July.)

Dumbo-based RSVP Studio is the architect of record. While we didn't find any renderings at RSVP, there is a new one on the website for mortgage lender Ladder Capital, who provided a bridge loan for … brace!



Permits show some 45,000 square feet for the 31 residences (rentals? condos?) … and another 5,700 square feet for the commercial space.

As New York Yimby first noted in July when the developers filed the permits, apartments will begin on the second floor, with four to five units per floor through the sixth story. The seventh and eighth floors will host two duplexes, and the ninth and tenth floors will hold one penthouse duplex with a private roof deck. Amenities include a shared terrace and recreation space on the second floor, and a fitness room, storage and bike storage in the cellar.

The BP — which was the second-to-last gas station left in the East Village — closed in July 2014.

If you been walking on Second Avenue near East First Street, then you've likely seen the new mural going up next to the former BP station on the corner.

As BoweryBoogie noted yesterday, this is the work of the Brazilian twins Os Gêmeos … Goggla shared the above photo from yesterday… we walked by earlier this morning, and they were just starting work…

At long last reps for the developer filed the new building plans for what's coming next to the former BP station on Second Avenue at East First Street.

The Deal Deal reported back in the fall that a new development with 50,000 square feet of condominiums and 7,000 square feet of retail is on the way.

New York Yimby had a few more details on Tuesday about the property that AORE Capital paid $32 million for last July. Per NYY: "The 10-story development will have 52,700 square feet of residential space and 6,000 square feet of retail spread between the cellar and first floor. There will be just 31 apartments, which works out to impressively sized units of 1,700 square feet a piece."

And!

Apartments will begin on the second floor, with four to five units per floor through the sixth story. The seventh and eighth floors will host two duplexes, and the ninth and tenth floors will hold one penthouse duplex with a private roof deck. Amenities include a shared terrace and recreation space on the second floor, and a fitness room, storage and bike storage in the cellar.

NYY also found a rendering for the project, though it may be out of date as it only shows eight and not 10 floors.



This marks the third new building of late on Second Avenue between East Second Street and East Houston, joining Jupiter 21 and Ben Shaoul's East Luxe.

We've been waiting for something construction-y to happen at the former BP station on Second Avenue at East First Street. Workers removed the iconic pumps and underground tanks in December.

The Deal Deal reported back in the fall that a new development with 50,000 square feet of condominiums and 7,000 square feet of retail is on the way. However, permits for a new building are not on file yet with the Department of Buildings. (The most recent permit is for the construction fence! Woo!)

But there is a some sort of drilling rig contraception (or is this a quinzhee?) … drilling and soil testing at the site now.

Also, is anyone going to see that Morrissey-Blondie show June 27 at the Garden?

Meanwhile, over at East Houston and Avenue C, EVG reader Magic Brian notes that demolition crews arrived late last week at the site of the former Mobil, which was the neighborhood's last gas station.







There are plans in the works for a 10-floor building (featuring 0 affordable units) with ground floor retail here.

The orders were put in yesterday to take down the station here on Second Avenue at East First Street. (So enjoy the graffiti while you can! And be mindful as workers remove the asbestos!)

And now The Deal Deal hears what's next: 50,000 square feet of condominiums and 7,000 square feet of retail.

AORE Capital, which purchased the site for $32 million, will take charge of the site’s development. There are no details yet on how tall the building will stand, how many residential units it will include or the prices of those units.

As a comparison of what is in store here ... the newish Jupiter 21 across the Avenue at the site of the former Mars Bar is 57,658 square feet.

Updated: The 2nd Avenue BP station closes tomorrow

As we previously reported, the BP station on Second Avenue at East First Street is closing … tomorrow is the last day.



MRM Auto Repair, which leased space here, moved to West 38th Street last month.

As for what's next for the BP property here, a tipster tells us that a boutique hotel will eventually rise here. For now, though, this is still in the rumor stages — there aren't any building plans on file with the city at this time.

Meanwhile, the BP station on East Houston and Lafayette will eventually be replaced by luxury something.

The station will now close after the business day on July 6.
