DOH temporarily closes Hot Kitchen

~evilsugar25 pointed out in the comments yesterday that new EV Grieve favorite Hot Kitchen on Second Avenue and Sixth Street got DOH'd ... the notice is dated Friday. Apparently the paperwork hasn't been filed online — didn't see a report at the DOH website just yet... Regardless, we'll be back when they reopen...

[UPDATED] DOH temporarily shutters that expensive club place that you'd likely never go to on East Houston

Earlier today, Julie Shapiro at DNAinfo reported that the DOH temporarily closed Open House, the newish club on East Houston just east of Avenue A. On Friday, the inspectors found 38 violation points, including "Live roaches present in facility's food and/or non-food areas."

The previous week, inspectors issued 52 points for violations including mice, roaches, contaminated food and issues with the bathroom and plumbing, DNAinfo pointed out.

Meanwhile, as Eater noted today, Stay Open just got some exposure via a feature in the Styles section of last Thursday's Times... the day before the DOH visit.

That article noted that people were grumbling about a two-hour wait to get in on a recent Friday. A few other excerpts from the Times:

Young women shed their furs and puffy coats to reveal sparkly dresses and tight miniskirts; their male counterparts sport button-downs and fleece. “It’s not a very cool crowd, but it would be a safe place to bring my brothers,” one patron said.

Ouch.

And!

Bottle service is encouraged, with flavored vodkas starting at $250 and a magnum of Dom PĂ©rignon capping things off at $1,200.

UPDATED 2-7
Per Eater, Open House is back open.

Sonar Gaow 'temporarily closed due to a plumbing problem'

That's the sign on the gate outside Sonar Gaow, one of the Indian restaurants on East Sixth Street... Just so happens to coincide with a closure last Thursday via the Department of Health, who handed out 49 violation points for the usual various critters.

This is one of those places that people have complained about for being "dirty" in the past, such as this post from Eater in 2008.

Cucina di Pesce closed for 'emergency repairs'

Cucina di Pesce, the solid Italian standby on East Fourth Street west of Second Avenue, has been closed this past week... sign says for emergency repairs...

Unfortunately, the DOH closed them last Thursday with 51 violation points for the usual "evidence of" stuff...

While standing there the other evening, this couple walks up for dinner. The woman is quite perturbed to find it closed. She peppers the carpenter out front with questions. Why are you closed? What happened? The carpenter explains that the place is closed for repairs. Nothing he says sinks in. Was there a fire? I don't understand why you're closed! Losing patience, the fellow finally snaps, "They're closed lady."

She harumpfs and says something about having already paid for parking...

Anyway, this reminds me that I haven't eater here in years... As New York put it: "Cucina di Pesce is the type of unpretentious, comfortably lived-in Italian restaurant that ruled New York before Mario Batali and his ilk turned the town upside-down."

Bad news for Joe's Bar

On Friday night, we walked by Joe's Bar, one of our favorite places, and the bar on East Sixth Street between Avenue B and Avenue A was closed...

The last time that we noticed Joe's was closed (in July) ... it turned out to be a false alarm... this time, though — the DOH temporarily closed them last week. The DOH hit them with 71 violation points. Some of them seemingly rinky-dink. ("Food Protection Certificate not held by supervisor of food operations.")

But. A well-placed tipster says that Joe's has been on a month-to-month lease ... worse, Joe's health may be an issue... The tipster thinks the bar might be done for now.

Extra:
Marty After Dark paid a visit to Joe's back in May.

• Personal cleanliness inadequate. Outer garment soiled with possible contaminant. Effective hair restraint not worn in an area where food is prepared.

Fu Sushi gets the OK to reopen

After several failed attempts, the DOH let Fu Sushi on Avenue B reopen. On Friday, the DOH revisited, and gave Fu nearly a clean bill of, um, health — just two violation points... that's down from the 99 points that shuttered the place back on June 23. So the the restaurant was able to reopen for the weekend.

After three damning stories, what are the chances that the New York Post notes that Fu Sushi has reopened?

Previously.

The Fu Sushi plot thickens: Manager denies restaurant open during DOH closure

So, you've read about Fu Sushi allegedly/reportedly remaining open despite a DOH closure, a story that may or may not include a restaurant employee chasing a Post photographer down the street. (And why not just stop and take a photo of this?)

Last night, Al Jones at 1010 WINS interviewed Fu Sushi manager Sam Chung, who denied they were open. Per the story:

Manager Sam Chung [said] that he and his employees were “cleaning up.”

“All we’re doing is wiping and re-wiping and re-wiping,” he said.

Chung denied the neighbor’s complaint the store was open for business over the weekend despite the violations.

“The door was open while I was…doing some renovating work,” he said.

When asked by Jones if his restaurant was selling any sushi at the time, Chung replied “no sir.”

Fox also checked in with a piece last night...

Closed Sushi Restaurant Remains Open: MyFoxNY.com

This should be pretty easy to clear up. Anyone eat here this past weekend with a receipt to prove it?

Updated:
The Post reports this morning that Fu failed its fourth DOH inspection yesterday.

Post reports that Fu Sushi employee chases Post photographer down the street

The Post picked up on reports from Neighborhoodr and here that Fu Sushi on Avenue B has been staying open even after the DOH closed it down for various violations. (And no credit from the Postthanks!)

Here's one passage from the article:

Workers raised the gate at the restaurant yesterday afternoon — but quickly closed when approached by The Post. One employee even chased a photographer down the street.
