Election Day, and Night

[On the plywood on 2nd Street at Avenue C]

As you may have heard, today is Election Day.

DNAinfo put together a voter's guide featuring a list of the local candidates and races on the ballot. You can find that here.

Polls are open from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. Go here to find your polling location. (Curbed assembled a few other helpful things to know about Election Day here.)

Grub Street listed a few bars (not East Village specific) around the city to watch the election results. Unfortunately, I didn't have time to call around and ask about Election Day specials at bars here. (One I know of: Iggy's Keltic Lounge on Ludlow between Stanton and Rivington is having an Election Evening party with some free food. Tips from the evening are going to First Descents, an organization that works with young adults impacted by cancer.)

Also, here's another way to spend part of the day...

On the campaign trail with East Village landlord Jared Kushner

[Reader photo at 118 E. 4th St. from March 6]

Several readers passed along the link to the Page 1 feature today in The New York Times titled Quiet Fixer in Donald Trump’s Campaign: His Son-in-Law, Jared Kushner.

According to the Cooper Square Committee, only Steve Croman owns more residential buildings in the East Village than Kushner does.

And as we've noted in multiple posts, there haven't been any shortage of tenant horror stories since Kushner and his company, Westminster City Living, started buying up properties in the East Village in 2013. For instance, in March, tenants at 118 E. Fourth St. went to Manhattan Housing Court as part of ongoing litigation against Kushner. Tenants there had been without gas for cooking since October. There are other issues too, such as collapsed ceilings, overflowing trash and sporadic heat. (Kushner eventually settled with the tenants.)

Brandon Kielbasa at the Cooper Square Committee told Gothamist in March that Kushner "treats both rent-stabilized and market-rate tenants badly, and seems to feel that he can get away with not maintaining buildings because the housing market is so tight he can keep them full anyway."

In July 2014, DNAinfo reported that "Kushner is using lawsuits, disruptive construction and neglect to force rent-stabilized tenants out of two buildings he owns in the East Village, as he converts them to high-end apartments, according to court documents and residents."

Meanwhile, around that same time, the Daily News filed a story with the headline Donald Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner forcing residents out of East Village building so he can get higher rents: tenants

In any event, the feature in the Times does not mention any of Kushner's holdings in the neighborhood or his reported aggressive tactics... focusing on his role as a key Trump adviser.

Here's an excerpt from the article:

In a gradual but unmistakable fashion, Mr. Kushner has become involved in virtually every facet of the Trump presidential operation, so much so that many inside and out of it increasingly see him as a de facto campaign manager. Mr. Kushner, who is married to Mr. Trump’s daughter Ivanka ... oversaw the creation of an online fund-raising system and has had a hand in drafting Mr. Trump’s few policy speeches. And now that Mr. Trump has secured the Republican nomination, Mr. Kushner is counseling his father-in-law on the selection of a running mate.

It is a new and unlikely role for Mr. Kushner, a conspicuously polite Harvard graduate whose prominent New Jersey family bankrolled Democrats for decades and whose father’s reputation was destroyed, in a highly public and humiliating manner, by his involvement in electoral politics.

The article notes that given the hectic campaign trail, "Kushner is devoting far less time to his real estate empire."

Previously on EV Grieve:
Tenants claim: Kushner and Westminster want to destroy this building's beautiful garden

Reports outline how Kushner Companies is aggressively trying to empty 170-174 E. 2nd St.

Local politicos join residents of 2 Jared Kushner-owned buildings to speak out about poor living conditions, alleged harassment

Jared Kushner's residents at 118 E. 4th St. would like gas for cooking and some heat

Report: NYPD's Hate Crime Task Force investigating fake Donald Trump sign

[Photo on Avenue from Monday by Karts]

That fake sign declaring that "Muslims Must Wear Identity Jackets At All Times" and signed by "Donald J. Trump, President of the United States" lasted about two days on Avenue A near East Ninth Street before someone removed it.

There was also one on Orchard Street, per The Lo-Down ... as well as other parts of the city.

Last night, WABC 7 reported the following:

The NYPD's Hate Crime Task Force is investigating a potential ant-Muslim harassment case after an outrageous sign was discovered on the Upper East Side.

Police are looking for the suspect who hung the sign that read, "Muslims must wear identity jackets at all times," and placed a yellow jacket next to it.

The sign was found near the ambassador of Yemen's residence.

Police have canvassed the area with signs asking for any help identifying who put that sign there.

The School for the Dogs at 155 E. Second St. between Avenue A and Avenue B is selling the Donald Trump poop bags for $2.50 a roll (good for 15 bags each). And always remember to curb your dog.

A new sign on Avenue A from Donald J. Trump, President of the United States

EVG reader Karts shared this photo from Avenue A near East Ninth Street... the sign arrived yesterday...

"Muslims Must Wear Identity Jackets At All Times."

The sign also lists Trump as President of the United States and Chris Christie as Secretary of the Interior.

No word at the moment whose responsible for creating and hanging the signs...

Updated 5/17

The city (or someone) removed the sign... it was gone by late Monday afternoon...

11:30 p.m.

Ah, we missed this. One of the signs turned up on Orchard Street as well, per The Lo-Down.

Updated 5/18

The fake signs, which also originally included Trump-branded jackets, were hung up around the city, per this BuzzFeed post.

The moment when a dog urinated on Donald Trump's portrait outside Tompkins Square Park

If you were around Seventh Street and Avenue A outside Tompkins Square Park earlier today, then you likely saw the large portraits of presidential candidates Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton.

Yonkers-based artist Jeffrey Reid has shown his work here in the past. (Like here and here.)

Anyway, EVG reader John Iz happened to be here at the moment a dog endorsed the Trump portrait...

[Updated] Support for Donald Trump at the Starbucks on 1st Avenue

To date, we've only seen more negative posters regarding Donald Trump's presidential campaign around the neighborhood... (like this one... or this one).

Now, a resident passes along these photos... showing Trump 2016 flyers in the windows of the Starbucks on First Avenue at East Third Street...

...it's not known who placed these in the windows — a Starbucks employee or a random Trump supporter/Starbucks patron...

Coincidentally or not, the building here is reportedly owned by Jared Kushner, who is married to Donald Trump's daughter Ivanka.

According to a recent feature in The Forward, Kushner has historically "given almost exclusively to Democrats, including Hillary Clinton."

Updated 6:20 p.m.

The signs have ben removed, DNAinfo reports. A spokesperson told DNAinfo that they were placed without permission.

Mixing politics and free standing lamps

The sign reads: "I work ... unlike Trump's immigration strategy." And it's written on the back of an immigration form.

Or you can let the Trump Tribeca Lighting Collection get you in the mood

Sorry about all the Trump stuff. But I was unaware that there was a Trump light collection...

It was explained this week in a blog post over at the Nova Lighting Store...

ELK's Trump Tribeca Lighting Collection takes its names from a billionaire business mogul and a chic downtown Manhattan community most commonly known for its celebrity denizens. It's no wonder then that these lights possess both elegant appeal and fashionable sensibility.

The fixture in the bottom photo runs $520.20.

We'll always have Donald Trump

“I just sold a house for $100 million in Palm Beach, though I don’t want to be bragging.”

Meanwhile, read about Trump's ongoing development efforts in Scotland and the one local man, Michael Forbes, who refuses to sell his property.

Mr. Trump swept in a few years ago and bought 1,400 acres here at the edge of the North Sea, eight miles from Aberdeen (Mr. Forbes’s 23-acre holding is part of the project site, on a fragile, frequently foggy, shifting sand dune). Mr. Trump pronounced it the perfect place to build two golf courses, a 450-bedroom hotel, 950 vacation homes, 500 single-family houses, a conference center and a golf academy.
