Here are your East 10th Street Historic District street signs

The Landmarks Preservation Commission OK'd the East 10th Street Historic District for the East Village in January.

And, as the photo shows, the East 10th Street Historic District street signs have arrived between Avenue A and Avenue B.

As you may recall, the Commission had the date for a public hearing on its proposal for the East 10th Street Historic District expedited because developer Ben Shaoul wanted to construct a rooftop addition at 315 E. 10th St. "that could potentially affect the character of the proposed district."

And we all know how that turned out.

Graffiti looking to expand on East 10th Street

[Google]

Atelier Muse, a bridal boutique at 224 E. 10th St., closed earlier in the summer... and it looks as if the store's next-door neighborhood, Graffiti, the acclaimed small-plates place from chef Jehangir Mehta, has designs on expanding.

An unnamed applicant for 224 E. 10th St. is on this month's CB3/SLA docket. According to documents on file at CB3 (PDF), Mehta would expand from his current small space, adding four tables (20 seats total) and a stand-up bar with five seats.

Looks as if they'd expand their hours too, from 10:30 p.m. currently on Sunday-Thursday to midnight, and from 11:45 p.m. on Friday-Saturday to 2 a.m.

The SLA & DCA Licensing Committee meets on Monday at 6:30 p.m., at the JASA/Green Residence, 200 East 5th Street at Bowery.

Water cafe now open on East 10th Street

Back in May, we pointed out the signs for Molecule, the incoming water cafe on East 10th Street between Avenue A and First Avenue... Several readers told us that the cafe, which sells "hyper-filtered, perfectly pure, eco-conscious" water and various related supplies, is now open.

Unfortunately, it wasn't open for the day when we went by...

We'll stop by at some point. Anyone else try it?

Closing sale continues at Magic Fingers, Old Good Things

A few weeks ago, we reported that longtime East Village resident Susan Leelike is closing her shop, Magic Fingers, Old Good Things, at 220 E. 10th St. (Between First Avenue and Second Avenue.)

Susan let us know that she has more inventory than she originally realized in her 20-plus year-old shop, and she will likely stay open through July with the sales on her vintage jewelry and collectibles.

Hours: Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays 3-7 p.m.

See more here.

After 20 years, Magic Fingers, Old Good Things closing on East 10th Street

After 20-plus years, longtime East Village resident Susan Leelike is closing her shop, Magic Fingers, Old Good Things, at 220 E. 10th St. (Between First Avenue and Second Avenue.)

Costume jewelry and collectibles are 25 percent to 50 percent off ... as the sign below reads...The store hours are Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays 3-7 p.m.

While a rent hike is the usual culprit in these situations... Leelike reports that it wasn't a greedy landlord that helped lead to the closing of her shop that specializes in vintage accessories. She cites a combination of a bad economy and some health issues... and it all leaves her with mixed feelings.

"I am both happy and sad about the closing," she said in an email.

Why there's a dining room set in the middle of Avenue B

Crews arrived early this morning for a shoot on 10th Street and Avenue B... a crew member said it's a short film titled "1956" ...

The NYPD is redirecting traffic on Avenue B ... several motorists have been grumbling ... (Avenue C is closed between Sixth Street and 12th Street for the Loisaida Festival ... so apparently driving and parking is a bit of a hassle for the time being. More of a hassle than usual...)

Anyway! Here's the street set...

...and as is customary, someone needs to be passed out asleep on the film set...

If you ever wanted to own a house and garden as seen in House & Garden

Over at 119 E. 10th St. (Central Village!), this home hit the market last week. Here's part of the Corcoran listing:

As featured in House & Garden: Uniquely special, garden level, 1 bedroom with office in a historic brownstone on the loveliest block in the East Village. Upon entering this very special apartment through your private gate, one is instantly transported to a retreat in the country.

... Continue through to the dining area complete with a wall of casement windows framing the view to the Old World, common garden behind and a Dutch door opening directly to this spectacularly private oasis.

Here are a few photos of Old World East Village...

Of course, the home doesn't come with an Old-World price: $1.7 million for one bedroom and 1.5 bathrooms.

Water store opening on East 10th Street

Here we are on East 10th Street between First Avenue and Avenue A ... previously the brief home to Cowgirl's Bakery... Molecule is opening soon here...

Per the sign on the front window, it's "a better way to buy water." They will sell "hyper-filtered, perfectly pure, eco-conscious" water... looks as if they'll sell some organic, vegan and raw food too...

The empty storefronts of East 10th Street

Just pointing out four storefronts now for rent along East 10th Street between Avenue A and First Avenue...

However, on the next block to the west... a new business is taking over the space last held by a nail salon here off First Avenue...

Take a bath, get transported to Italy

Oh, just pointing out a listing for a two-bedroom home at 119 E. 10th Street — "central village" as the listings always list ... Nice place. Which is what you'd expect for $6,000 in rent per month.

Per the listing:

A near miss with a falling window mantel on East 10th Street

Earlier this morning (around 1 a.m.?), several readers noted falling debris on East 10th Street just west of Avenue B...

Per @mattheworley: "A mantle just fell off a 3rd floor window above Blind Barber, almost falling on the line to get in. 1000 firemen outside my apt now."

We didn't hear of any injuries. This morning, EV Grieve reader Ted Roden's photos give us an idea of what happened... you can see the damage to the DSA Management awning...

Here's another shot from @rviloria ...

Several readers noted that Company, the bar on East 10th Street just west of First Avenue, is currently closed for renovations...

The sign notes they'll reopen Thursday... and that they are under new ownership... In July, the CB3/SLA committee allowed a transfer of the liquor license in an ownership change here...
