Verizon's ongoing war on graffiti and stuff

Nearly eight months have passed since we last looked in on the ongoing brown-paint war at the Verizon building along 13th Street (at Second Avenue)... we thought that Verizon had simply given up.

Not so!

EV Grieve reader evilnyc just passed along these shots. A new tactic — powerwashing and painting via the city's Graffiti Free NYC...

Displaced East 13th Street residents hope to return home today after chimney collpase

As we first reported, a chimney collapse Sunday evening around 8 at 528 E. 13th St. between Avenue A and Avenue B forced many residents out of the building...

[EV Grieve reader Deanne Draeger]

Residents are hopeful that they can return home today. One thing that could prevent this from happening: the fire escape, which building management said may have been "compromised" following the collapse.

The evacuation is only for the 10 units in the back of the building. Those residents who live in apartments facing East 13th Street have been able to stay.

[Via EV Grieve reader Ilena]

We asked building resident Sarah Laskow a few questions via email about her experiences, when a quiet evening at home becomes an apartment full of firefighters.

"I first thought a building had fallen down, maybe a few blocks away, and for a minute I thought it was another earthquake," Laskow said. "They were doing some work on the back of the building and I checked to see if the scaffolding had fallen. It was still up."

A firefighter later pointed out the chimney from her fifth-floor window. The top portion of the chimney had fallen, though a portion of it still remained connected to the building. Oops. Actually, the bottom portion of the chimney had fallen out — not the top.

Regardless, per the DOB, the residents in the back of the building needed to leave. The Red Cross was providing a place for any displaced residents to stay.

"We had a chance to get our stuff together — they weren't rushing us out," she said. "But a bunch of firefighters were coming into our apartment, so we left pretty quickly."

She made the best of the situation. (For instance, going to Table 12 on Avenue A for a vanilla milkshake.)

"It's disorienting not to be allowed to stay in our apartment, especially since the building itself seems OK at this point," Laskow said. "But it's also somewhat reassuring that the city is making sure it's safe to return."

Chimney collapse at 528 E. 13th St.

Several readers have told us about a chimney collapse at 528 E. 13th St. between Avenue A and Avenue B around 8:30 tonight...

Witnesses said that everyone is OK... however, residents who live in the rear of the building will have to spend tonight (and perhaps a few other nights too) elsewhere... the Red Cross was going to put anyone up who needed it... One resident described the noise as "sounding like an earthquake."

The following photos are from EV Grieve reader Deanne Draeger...

According to the DOB, there have been three complaints against the building... In September 1997, "EAST WALLOUT OF PLUMP REAR YARD CHIMNEY PULLING AWAY FROM BLDG. BROKEN SHAFT."

On Oct. 8, 2010 — "BRICK CHIMNEY SEPARATING" ... and Sept. 22, 2010, "FAILURE TO MAINTAIN BUILDING WALL. NOTED: STRUCTURAL STRESS CRACKS AT NUMEROUS LOCATIONS ON ALL FLOORS OF EAST ELEVATION."

According to the DOB, Crisari Realty is the owner.

The campaign to save Heathers

We talked about Heathers several times last week after the CB3/SLA committee voted not to renew the East 13th Street bar's liquor license. (You can read our posts here ... and here.) As we noted, the liquor license expires on Oct. 31.

Eater reports that the State Liquor Authority votes on the matter on Oct. 1 (They work on Saturdays?).

And more per Eater:

Rather than silently await their fate, Heathers is doing its best to turn public opinion in their favor by sending out a press release to plead their case. Owner Heather Millstone blames it all on the smoking law, saying that her customers have to go outside to smoke and despite their best efforts, sometimes these smokers make noise that drives her neighbors crazy.

Making the case to 'save' Heathers

We haven't heard much about Heathers — for or against — since the CB3/SLA committee voted not to renew the East 13th Street bar's liquor license on Monday. Members of the 13th Block Association and other residents brought "No renewal for Heathers" signs to the meeting. Residents speaking out against the bar talked about the Heather's crowd smoking pot, urinating in doorways and what not. (The Times highlighted the ongoing noise issues in a lengthy article in January 2007.)

Owner Heather Millstone reminded everyone how surveillance tapes that she provided helped lead to the arrest of former NYPD officers Kenneth Moreno and Franklin L. Mata.

According to the State Liquor Authority, the license for Heathers expires on Oct. 31.

As you know, the State Liquor Authority has the final say in these matters. This doesn't mean that Heathers will close. As we mentioned earlier, the CB3/SLA committee voted to deny TenEleven's license renewal in July, though the SLA later approved it.

Meanwhile, Keith Wagstaff, a writer for The L Magazine, checked in yesterday with a post titled "Save Heathers! Beloved E Village Bar Under Attack From NIMBYs." He writes:

This simply shall not stand. Heathers has been in the neighborhood since 2005; it is a bastion for a diverse mix of gay and straight creatives who are looking for a drink in an increasingly frat-like East Village bar scene.

2005? Well, OK. Also...

The main problems, as a person who has been going to Heathers consistently for years, is a) the bar is on a side street instead of a main avenue b) it's just too damn popular. The East Village bar scene is basically becoming divided into fancy, $13 cocktail places and beer pong douche-a-ramas. ... There are very few bars in the East Village with an artistic bent and affordable drinks, and if Heathers goes, there will be one less reason to leave Brooklyn.

A Building finally ready for balcony repairs

Thirteen months ago, workers erected a sidewalk shed outside the world-famous, pool-party palace on East 13th Street...

And yesterday! Workers started putting up the scaffolding...

There were a handful of complaints on file with the DOB:

FAILURE TO MAINTAIN BALCONIES THROUGH-OUT BUILDING

And!

FACADE - DEFECTIVE/CRACKING

According to a new DOB permit, workers will be doing "balcony repairs."

As The Real Deal reported in April 2010:

Beneath the two-year-old building's reputation for hosting raucous rooftop pool parties lies a reality worse than the most killer hangover — flooding, crumbling balconies, alleged mismanagement of the condo board's funds and two unresponsive developers who have left owners banging their heads against mold-ridden walls, claim several residents who forwarded dozens of documents detailing these issues to The Real Deal.

Why the wait? Perhaps to give the A Buildingers another summer of fun?

Let's make this Cornell Edwards Way

Cornell Edwards, who opened The Flower Stall at 143 E. 13th St. in 1967 and ran it for 43 years at this location, passed away last spring. His partner Bill is leading an effort to have East 13th Street between Third Avenue and Fourth Avenue designated as Cornell Edwards Way.

You can sign the petition by stopping by the Flower Stall or Stock next door...

Singaporean restaurant coming soon to East 13th Street

Several readers have asked about what's coming to the space east of Key Bar on East 13th Street... As Grub Street reported last week, it will be a Singaporean restaurant called Masak. Chef Larry Reutens told Grub Street that the food will involve his favorite dishes from around Singapore, "including some that reflect the city-state's Malay influence and others that harken to his mother's Cantonese heritage." No opening date just yet.
