The end is nearer for this block of East 14th Street

Prep work for the high-end housing afterlife continues for a good portion of East 14th Street between Avenue A and Avenue B … crews have been removing asbestos at former businesses such as the Blarney Cove...

… ahead of the demolition to make way for the new retail-residential complex that will call 500 E. 14th St. home… Until then… here's what's left...

To date, the developers haven't submitted any demolition permits or new building plans with the city.

And here's a look at a conceptual rendering from an RKF retail listing about 500 E. 14th St. ...

Taking another look at the all-new East 14th Street

On Friday afternoon, we got the first look at what a good chunk of East 14th Street between Avenue A and Avenue B might look like a few years from now ... via this conceptual rendering from an RKF retail listing ...

To date, eight parcels consisting of 222 Avenue A and 504 - 530 E. 14th St. (excluding No. 520) were leased for a 99-year period. Per the retail listing, this will be a seven-story residential and retail development.

The post drew 57 comments... ranging from better than what's there now (several commenters noted the corner space is currently housing a handful of people) ...

... to could have been worse... to ugly, boring, suburban ...

So we're trying to get an idea of how large this "residential and retail development" will be... The red lines (where are the arrows?!) outline the parcels that were sold...

And one thing that we didn't mention Friday: The listing says that there will be a "loading dock located on the East 13th Street side of building."

So what will go on East 13th Street to make this loading dock a reality? (And is this quiet stretch of East 13th Street really loading-dock friendly?) Our best guess... whatever this thing is on the block...

And from the air...

And it seems like that fire on Avenue A and East 14th Street was a really long time ago already...

[EV Grieve reader Sergey]

The three-alarm fire wiped out the corner on May 12, 2010... taking with it neighborhood favorites Stuyvesant Grocery and Pete's-a-Pizza.

Here is the future of East 14th Street and Avenue A: 7 stories of residential and retail

Wow. Here we go.

As we first reported last December, eight parcels consisting of 222 Avenue A and 504 - 530 E. 14th St. (excluding No. 520) were leased for a 99-year period by the respective owner of East Village 14 LLC. City property records showed that Gary Barnett of Extell Development signed a 99-year lease worth $35.14 million to rent eight Sol Goldman-owned properties.

And the businesses have disappeared, including The Blarney Cove and Bargain Express.

What's next?

Here's a look at a conceptual rendering from an RKF retail listing with more details for the all-new 500 E. 14th St. ...

More about Rite Aid's closure on E. 14th St.

As we reported on Monday, the Rite Aid at 516 E. 14th St. between Avenue A and Avenue B closes at the end of this month... to yield to a new 8-parcel development on this block.

A reader spoke with the head pharmacist and shared this info: The pharmacy will close for good here after tomorrow. All prescriptions will be automatically transferred to the newish Duane Reade on First Avenue at East 14th Street.

Per the reader: "Obviously this is for convenience since the Duane Reade is the closest drug store ... but if anyone wants to switch to another area pharmacy they can by calling the Rite Aid ... or even the Duane Reade after Friday and making arrangements."

Rite Aid on E. 14th St. closes at the end of October

Employees at the Rite Aid on East 14th Street between Avenue A and Avenue B received word last week that the store will close at the end of October. A manager confirmed the closure.

This is the latest business to exit ahead of some new, unspecified development via Extell ... Rite Aid joins Rainbow ... The Blarney Cove... Bargain Express ... Petland ... and the ABC Animal Hospital as former block mates. (The laundromat moved toward Avenue B. ABC Animal Hospital is now at 200 Avenue A.)

As we first reported last December, eight parcels consisting of 222 Avenue A and 504 - 530 E. 14th St. (excluding No. 520) were leased for a 99-year period by the respective owner of East Village 14 LLC. As The Real Deal reported, city property records show that Gary Barnett of Extell Development signed a 99-year lease worth $35.14 million to rent eight Sol Goldman-owned properties.

Workers had been test drilling ahead of the construction in recent weeks... we saw workers pack up the Davey drill last Thursday...

To date, reps for the developer have yet to file any demolition permits or building plans.

A big improvement for (maybe) the worst East Village corner

Whoa. Shocker. That sidewalk bridge that had been on the corner of First Avenue and East 14th Street is finally gone... Oh! So this is what all these businesses look like...

As for this being maybe the worst corner in the neighborhood for general congestion, stupidity, annoyances ... that's subjective... but it really sucks. You may have other least-favorite corners.

First sign of more development on East 14th Street?

As you know, many storefronts along East 14th Street between Avenue A and Avenue B have been cleared out ahead of some new development that will eat up a good portion of the block. (Read about this here.)

Now it appears that it's time to starting clearing out storefronts just to the west... between Avenue A and the Peter Stuyvesant Post Office, whose lease expires in February.

The USPS will lease the former Duane Reade on East 14th Street near First Avenue for retail services, such as stamp sales and P.O. boxes.

Back in April, we noted this about the single-level businesses lined up next to the post office: "This is all drool-worthy space for some developer."

And just like that, an EVG Facebook tipster notes that the Stuyvesant Stationery shop next door has lost its lease and is closing...

For now, there are only the usual rumors about what's next here (NYU dorms are always a popular guess) ... and how will the other businesses along here fare in the coming months? Will the rest of the block to Avenue A go away to make way for a new development?

Test drilling along an empty stretch of East 14th Street

A crew has set up shop over on East 14th Street...outside the strip of recently vacated buildings between Avenue A and Avenue B ... The workers are testing water levels and the composition of the soil ... steps to take before any construction can start here...

A still-unspecified new development will eat up much of the block.

No word on any construction timeline here either. Back in November 2012, we spotted a drill outfit at the former Mary Help of Christians, which was eventually demolished last month.

This open, airy, East Village studio seeks $2,600 a month

Unit has bright floor-to-ceiling fencing throughout. The hard floors and stainless steel finishes complete this great unit. Have a summer move-in with spring pricing! Call the leasing office today. Close to restaurants, shopping, subway. Students OK.

Sooooo. Thanks to EVG reader juan TRED for the description and photo... this thing arrived on East 14th Street near First Avenue last Friday. Probably some kind of construction storage thingy. Or is it? Anyone?

East 14th Street corridor now nearly business-free ahead of new development

The storefronts continue to disappear on East 14th Street between Avenue A and Avenue B. Yesterday, Rainbow finally shut its doors. The junior retailer joins now-former block neighbors The Blarney Cove... Bargain Express ... Petland ... the ABC Animal Hospital ...

One business is actually staying on the block: the laundromat, which is moving east ...

... to the space Ray's East Side 99-cent store had before moving to the Copper Building.

After the laundromat moves, just Rite Aid will remain between Avenue A and 520 East 14th St. (not part of the land grab).

A still-unspecified new development will eat up much of the block. As we first reported last December, eight parcels consisting of 222 Avenue A and 504 - 530 E. 14th St. (excluding No. 520) were leased for a 99-year period by the respective owner of East Village 14 LLC.

Turns out the identity of "East Village 14 LLC" was right under our noses this whole time.

Back in April, The Real Deal examined the late real-estate mogul Sol Goldman's $6 billion portfolio. As part of their reporting:

And in November, city property records show, Gary Barnett of Extell Development signed a 99-year lease worth $35.14 million to rent eight Goldman-owned properties across the street from Stuyvesant Town, including 516 East 14th Street, 530 East 14th Street and 222 Avenue A.

Extell has been busy with such high-profile luxury properties around the city like One57 ... an "ultra-luxe condo tower" at 217 West 57th Street ... and One Hudson Yards.

So. You can likely count on something really tall and luxurious here one day.

Hawa Smoothies opening on East 14th Street

Signs are up now on a previously vacant storefront at 422 E. 14th St. between First Avenue and Avenue A for Hawa Smoothies ...

There was also a Hawa location on East Broadway, though that is now closed ... the shop is reportedly named for owner Michael Wang's native Hawaii...

Construction update on exciting new business opening along East 14th Street

As noted in April, the mostly awful but serviceable (mostly!) Cafe Amore's Pizza Restaurant on East 14th Street near Fourth Avenue is becoming a — ding! ding! — Wells Fargo branch... the above photo shows that the plywood shanty has arrived. Wonder if the bank branch will be constantly hiring for a cashier like Cafe Amore was...

Con Ed's 'constant ear-splitting' work on 14th and C

Some residents who live near East 14th Street and Avenue C are upset by ongoing noise from Con Ed crews working on the street... per one resident:

Last night ConEd did below-street level work until 3 AM at 14th and Ave C. Tonight they have been jackhammering for a full hour from 8 to 9 PM. It's so loud my daughter is crying!

This street work started several days ago. It always begins around 8 or 9 PM and then goes on for hours and hours.

Residents are beside themselves. We can't sleep, we can't function in our homes due to constant ear-splitting noise.

Development back in play for East 14th Street and Avenue C

[February 2012]

Looks as if there is renewed interest in the southwest corner of East 14th Street and Avenue C.

The R&S Strauss auto parts store here closed in the spring of 2009. And nothing has happened with the building since then (save the addition of more graffiti...)

Billy Gray reported at the Commercial Observer yesterday that Avison Young is now exclusively marketing 644 E. 14th St. "And a near-absence of height restrictions has brokers dangling the possibility of a tower on a site with 65,689 square feet of development rights," he noted.

As we previously reported in January:

According to the Massey Knakal Web site, the building was sold in January 2009 for $12.3 million. As the site noted: "The lot measures 114’9” x 88’and has a total buildable square footage of approximately 36,125 sq. ft. for residential use or 68,262 sq. ft. for a community facility, which will likely be the ultimate use of the property."

Turns out the buyer was Arun Bhatia, who currently has plans in place for a dorm at the former 35 Cooper Square. And the developer filed plans for a new 11-story building here on Dec. 23, 2009, per DOB records. The City disapproved the plans later in 2010.

These plans called for a 65,399-square-foot building. In an email to the Observer, Neil Helman of Avison Young's capital markets group said that the location "on two wide streets with virtually no restrictions on height limitations is also highly advantageous, enabling a tower to be erected, which would take advantage of the great East River views."

He expected a price to be the mid-$20 million range.

Is this a tough sell? The space is bounded by the Con Ed plant, which is prone to releasing steam pressure in the middle of the night and scaring the heck out of people.

... and Campos Plaza to the south... Security cameras, funded in part by City Councilmember Rosie Mendez's office, were installed here in March 2012 after an uptick in violence reportedly left residents living in fear.

Or is this really the beginning of a new era along here. As Jeremiah Moss wrote about R&S back in May 2008, this corner represents "an opening for the overall Meatpacking effect that is rippling up and down this main artery to reach deep into the East Village. The site has 'flagship opportunity' written all over it."

High-speed chase ends with guns drawn on East 14th Street and First Avenue

...We're awaiting more details on what went down here... James and Karla Murray shared these photos, noting that the chase ended with a multi-vehicle crash at East 14th Street and First Avenue...

More information as soon as it's available...

There is speculation among witnesses that this was about a stolen vehicle... no official confirmation yet... Other witnesses say that the police drove west in the eastbound lane of East 14th Street to stop the Jeep ...
