Earlier this evening on East Fifth Street

The FDNY was out in full force tonight on East Fifth Street between Avenue A and Avenue B... ConEd was on the scene too, a reader reports, checking for gas leaks.... No fire, just a scare...

Mary Ann's still closed; 3 of 4 eateries currently shuttered on Second Avenue and Fifth Street

Signs out front still say they'll reopen on Nov. 4. We have spotted several people inside working around the eatery's bar area here at Second Avenue and Fifth Street.

Although this closure is certainly temporary, seems weird to have three of the four restaurants on this corner shuttered. (And the fourth, the Moonstruck, has been temporarily shuttered in the past too.)

An Italianate-style townhouse and an old Maple tree on East Fifth Street

Here's a townhouse that has been for sale now the last month on one of my favorite blocks in the neighborhood — East Fifth Street between Avenue A and Avenue B...

It's going for $3.95 million. Here are details:

Italianate style townhouse tucked into a quiet block of the burgeoning East Village. There is a lovely front courtyard with a half century old maple tree. With it's large extension on all four floors, this house offers over 6300 square feet of living space. Due to the configuration of the extension, the home has four exposures on the upper three floors and three exposures on the garden level. Original mantels, window frames, baseboards and original floors have been preserved on many floors. Currently there is an owner's duplex, two floor through apartments and a front garden apartment. A charming garden meanders along the east of the property and opens up in the rear. There is also potential for a wonderful roof deck. This townhouse is delivered vacant and is perfect for conversion to a wonderful single or two family home
.

In fact, there's an open house today from noon to 1:30 p.m.

Of course, the last townhouse that I really liked on this block — just a few doors to the east — was torn down to make way for a Williamsburgate condo.

The spirit of East Fifth Street

As I was saying, East Fifth Street between Avenue A and Avenue B is one of my favorite blocks around... and, aside from the masses looking for the Ace Bar on weekends, it's a lovely little street with a strong sense of community...

And this is the block in which the family of East Village-based professional photographer James Maher spent their lives... His grandparents and mother all grew up here... Thanks to James for letting me post some of his family photos from the 1930s and 1940s. (He has many more at his site, New York Photography by James Maher)

Talk about a strong sense of community. Here's a celebration of the "Fifth Street Boys" returning home from World War II.

Per James on the photos below: "I just spoke with my Aunt who tells me that the photo was taken around 1945 to celebrate the end of the war. I don't know exactly which building, but apparently my grandma and relatives had three apartments in the same building on 5th Street between Avenue A and B, which is where this photo was taken from. My grandmother and all of her sisters are most of the girls that are looking up at the camera in the second photo."

And here's a shot likely taken on East Fifth Street... on the way to an Easter Party...

And, arguably my favorite photo... "This is taken of my Great Aunt Julia, who lived until she was 100. She was sharper at 99 than I am at this moment, and it's nice to see a younger photo that shows the same spark that everyone knew her for." This was taken on a rooftop of an East Fifth Street building...

And as Mick noted in the comments, Ephemeral New York — an EVG favorite — highlighted "The East Fifth Street Boys" in a post on Sunday.

East Fifth Street co-op with Japanese maples out back reduced now by 40 percent

Here's a lovely little one-bedroom at 513 E. Fifth St. ... with a private backyard... You could roll out of bed and practically be in Sophie's... or maybe hop the fence and be in Joe's...

I suppose there are other amenities too.
Per Corcoran:

Investor Friendly Coop with private back yard! Great Investment Opportunity, rent out right away! No board approval, all cash required. Prime East Village renovated one bedroom with a huge sun flooded private garden, totaling over 1100 sqft. This newly renovated one bed/one bath coop offers a tranquil indoor space with plenty of pre-war details, including exposed brick, hardwood floors and high ceilings. Recently renovated kitchen and bath create a nice relationship of pre-war detail with modern amenities, such as Bosch dishwasher, washer and dryer and well appointed closets with storage space. Move from the beautiful indoor space directly into your outdoor oasis, which has been designed by a landscape architect and features wood decking, a separate fieldstone patio, and Japanese maples among other year round and seasonal plantings.

This coop is located around the corner from Tompkins Square Park as well as several other East Village gardens, restaurants, and shopping. There is no board approval and flexible purchasing is allowed, purchasing for someone else, investment, guarantors and pied-a-terres are all fine. This building is pet friendly.

And the price continues to fall...since February, the price has come down some 40 percent, according to Streeteasy...

02/17/2010 -- Listed by Corcoran at $650,000.
03/24/2010 -- Price decreased by 8% to $599,000.
06/10/2010 -- Price decreased by 17% to $499,000.
08/05/2010 -- Price decreased by 15% to $425,000.

No takers yet for this oasis? Maybe it's the neighbors?

The Greenpointing of East Fifth Street continues

So, here's a quarterly update on the construction at 532 E. Fifth St. between Avenue A and Avenue B ...

Before!

Now!

Someday! ... Six floors and 10 units of glass and shine...

As a Curbed tipster noted back in February: "Six stories & ten units sounds reasonable, but that building is stylistically out of sync with the rest of the block. Reminds me more of the condos going up in Greenpoint."

East Fifth Street is turning into a Ghost Town ... or Goat's Town (with a $75 entree!)

Hey, meet Sophie's new neighbor! One more item from last night's CB3/SLA space...  courtesy of Thomas Garry's reporting at Eater.

The committee said OK to an eatery for the former Le Tableau/Seymour Burton/Butcher Bay space .... tentatively titled Ghost Town.

Hmmm... if that name holds up, then I can't wait to walk by when the place is empty and say, Ghost Town is a ghost town now!

[Waiting to get booed]

Uh, anyway, Ghost Town?! The way I like it!

''

[UPDATE]: Grub Street has more details. And GS says the name of the joint will be Goat's Town! Not Ghost Town. Hmm. Nick Morgenstern of the General Greene in Brooklyn is behind the place. "He plans to open an eleven-table restaurant called Goat's Town in late October that will serve "continental" cuisine, and there’ll be at least one $75 entrée, as a board member pointed out to assuage one neighbor's fears that the place would attract a loud and rowdy crowd."

So, maybe a selection from Goats Head Soup is in order?

Cooper Square Hotel finishes building fence that looks just as out of place as the hotel

As I noted yesterday, workers were fencing in the garden spot along East Fifth Street outside the Cooper Square Hotel... How many Popsicle sticks were used to make this?

However, as you can see, the Coopsters left a slot in the Popsicle sticks for any fancy car parties they may have this summer...

That "Lewd Loud Sound" for the Cooper Square Hotel

With the nice weather last night, apparently some Cooper Square Hotel guests got a little raucous.

Which, perhaps, inspired one of the greatest e-mails ever:

Lewd Loud Sound From [XXX] E 5th Street for balcony users at Cooper Square Hotel. Thought you'd be interested.

Yes I am!

Fifth Street and Avenue D for $918 a square foot

The other day we featured a countryish home on East Fifth Street... if that was a little too "Green Acres" for you, then consider this new listing on the market further to the east... all the way to Avenue D....

According to Corcoran:

The East Village with soaring 18 foot ceilings and monthly carrying cost below $600 (including real estate taxes). This two bedroom features four oversized southern facing windows with unobstructed open views to allow maximum sunlight all day long. The apartment features stainless steel appliances, including a Viking range there is also a dishwasher and washer dryer.

There are hardwood floors throughout the loft that compliment the marble counter tops and marble baths. The traditional stairs, including cast iron railings help to add unique features to this open layout. The addition of plenty of closest means storage is not a problem. All of these wonderful details are just three short flights up.

The building features a 421-a tax abatement. In addition to the tax abatement, there is a common roof deck only one flight up from this apartment. The building also features bike storage and close proximity to transportation. Get all the pluses of new construction without the additional closing costs.

(Um, that listing came written this way.)

So! Let's see what they mean by all that...

And it's $725,000 for 790 square feet ... for those of you into this kind of thing, that's $918 per square foot... which seems like a lot for a space adjacent to a 3.84 acre city housing project.

A little bit of country on East Fifth Street

Man, I can almost hear the rooster crow reading the newish listing for this one bedroom home on East Fifth Street just east of Cooper Square. As the listing says:

Nestled in the heart of the East Village is your own private oasis. Relax and enjoy a 680sf South facing private garden with shade provide by a beautiful Norway Maple tree and framed by gorgeous plantings. The indoor oasis is just as special creating a wonderful country in the city feel where you can relax, entertain and work. With North / South exposures and the birds chirping on the tree lined block it's easy to forget where you are. The country kitchen provides top of the line appliances and plenty of space to use them. Hardwood floors, HVAC and tons of storage including private basement storage room complete this fabulous home. The small scale condominium is conveniently located near all of the shops, restaurants, buses and trains that make life in the East Village so much fun to live in.

And then you hear a party coming from the Cooper Square Hotel!

Anyway! Here's what it looks like.

Beaming up on Fifth Street

A few weeks back Curbed dropped the details on what the new building will look like at 532 E. Fifth St. between Avenue A and Avenue B...Six floors and 10 units of glass and shine...

Now the steel is rising from the pit...

...and soon, the neighbors to the west of this property will lose their light and views...

Perhaps someone inside will document the coming darkness.

Caffe Buon Gusto continues to remain restaurant-free

Caffe Buon Gusto on Avenue B at Fifth Street looks to remain vacant for a little bit longer... CBG was scratched from last night's CB3/SLA liquor license docket... Meanwhile, perhaps the space can continued to be used by those in need of shelter for the night...

Caffe Buon Gusto's shelter

Last summer, after a seemingly lengthy renovation, Caffe Buon Gusto hoisted its signage at Fifth Street and Avenue B. Since then, things have not gone so well for the Italian eatery ... The space has turned into a graffiti hotspot... and its first pass at obtaining a liquor license last October didn't go so well... The Caffe Buon Gusto folks are back before the CB3/SLA board this Monday.

Meanwhile, in recent weeks, the space has provided shelter for a variety of people....

From Donald to now: 511 E. Fifth St., 1B

Last month, we wrote about Donald Baumgartner, a longtime East Village resident who was evicted from his East Fifth Street apartment... Neil Janowitz, one of Donald's former neighbors, had continued to stay in touch with Donald, who's now living at East Haven Nursing Home in the Bronx.

Donald had lived at 511 E. Fifth Street since 1967. As Neil described:

"His place in 511 was a trip. Like a time warp. No one had renovated it in two or three decades, so it had a bathtub in the kitchen, two interior bedrooms with windows that looked out on the living room and lots of built-in cabinets and trunks. The floor was so badly worn that you could see various layers/flooring styles dating back an unknowable amount of time."

A few days after Donald was evicted by the landlord, Neil shot some video of the apartment... and last week Neil went back to see what the apartment looked like now...

(Uh, apparently the video isn't appearing in some browsers. You can go directly to the source here.)

I understand that Donald was paying $700 a month for rent... will be curious what this two-bedroom apartment will go for after the extensive renovations...

East Fifth Street latest block to get an out-of-place metal-steel-glass box

Back in November 2008, we noted the destruction of the house at 532 E. Fifth St. between Avenue A and Avenue B. Last summer, we learned that this lot would soon be home to a five-story, 10-unit apartment...

And now Curbed has the details on just what this complex will look like... prepare to burn your retinas...

According to Curbed:

The firm's web site also says the steel and concrete building (with metal balconies) is five stories, but our advanced math skills have us thinking it's more along the lines of six. After checking out the plans, our original tipster wrote back: "Six stories & ten units sounds reasonable, but that building is stylistically out of sync with the rest of the block. Reminds me more of the condos going up in Greenpoint."

Out of sync is right... this stretch of the East Village has always been one of my favorites...
