The Bluebird Coffee Shop has been sold

The Bluebird Coffee Shop opened in November 2009 on East First Street just west of First Avenue. It became a favorite spot of several EV Grieve readers, who have passed along word that the owners have sold the shop (new job in another city). The incoming owners take over the space on Monday. Word is they're keeping it as a coffee shop/cafe, though with a new staff.

Meanwhile, @sandwichboarder notes in the photo below that the Bluebird is now closing early these days...

Prima Strada's three meals a day

Here's a bit of a progress report on Prima Strada, the new Italian restaurant coming to the former Elephant space on East First Street... Signs are up indicating the team behind Summit Bar on Avenue C will be serving breakfast, lunch and dinner, as The Feast reported back in December.

The Elephant closed in December. (You can read its history here, including an interview with the manager.)

Fork in the Road posted an in-progress video teaser of the space a few weeks back.

The brunch line at Prune is getting longer

For unknown reasons, I've walked by Prune on East First Street at the exact moment they open for Sunday brunch the past two weeks ... and, for continued unknown reasons, I took a photo from the back of the line...

There goes the Elephant

Over the weekend, workers continued gutting the former Elephant thai place on East First Street...

The Elephant closed in December. (You can read its history here, including an interview with the manager.)

What's next here?

The Feast reported that the team behind fancy cocktail emporium Summit Bar on Avenue C will open an Italian cafe this spring. They are considering the name Prima Strada, which translates to First Street. Word is the place will serve breakfast, lunch and dinner and open at 8 a.m.

The Guggenheim wants our rat-infested First Street lot

You know that vacant, rat-infested lot on East First Street near Second Avenue? The Guggenheim has its eye on it. Check out this report from Patrick Hedlund at DNAinfo:

Now, the Guggenheim is floating a plan to build a two-level structure there in late 2011 that would act as a short-term community center, gathering space and think-tank before moving to other major international cities, representatives from the museum told Community Board 3 Thursday.

Pruning in the rain

A few people waiting for tables for Prune's brunch yesterday morning... For a moment, it seemed like some kind of spectator sport (the golf umbrella)... and a few people escaping the rain under the awning... with their faces pressed against the glass... Must have been one humorous sight from within the restaurant...

Is this $30,000-a-month apartment the most expensive ever in the East Village?

Back at the beginning of the summer, The Wall Street Journal noted that three-bedroom apartments in 2 Cooper Square were going for $20,000 a month, which would make these the most most expensive apartments in the neighborhood.... not true, seeing as there was a $25,000-a-month penthouse around the corner on First Street...

Speaking of First Street... somehow, this three-bedroom apartment at 38 E. First St. between First Avenue and Second Avenue escaped my expensive home radar... It first hit the market in September... and it remains on the market for $30,000 a month...

I'm trying to figure out if this is the most expensive monthly rental ever in the neighborhood... If you have any info to support this, please let me know...

Uh, anyway, what exactly do you get for that kind of money every month?

One of downtown's most dramatic and unique properties! Consisting of approx 5000 sq ft, this XXX mint, elegant home features 16 foot ceilings, corinthian columns, grand entry room, a 45 ft long living room, 3 master suites,library/family room, formal dining room,an enormous chefs kitchen & terrace.Other features include beautiful maple floors, oversized windows & doors,3 zone cental a/c & 3.5 baths. Building allows live/work.A magnificent property suitable for both family living & entertaining on a tremendous scale! Other Features: East, South, West, New Windows, Washer/Dryer designer wnd treatments, gold leaf ceil in entry hall

What East First Street will look like after the Houston construction project

Earlier today, we talked about the construction on East First Street between Avenue A and First Avenue...and how that might impact the cab-heavy business at Punjabi Grocery & Deli.

I was unaware of the extent of the infrastructure changes planned on East Houston from the Bowery to FDR ... So many thanks to a reader for sending along the plans... I'm still sorting through them... but the area on East First between A and First Avenue will see significant changes... see the plans for yourself....

Vehicles will no longer be able to enter First Street right off Houston at Avenue A (a dangerous intersection, if you ask me...) mostly because they'll be a greenstreet ... There's a similar greenstreet planed for Avenue D...

Work is expected to be completed by the summer of 2013.

Bye bye First Street entryway!
