Reader report: Cops and a BB gun hole at 2A

From an EV Grieve reader:

I was walking home last night around 7 and a cop came barreling down the wrong way on 2nd St. toward A. By the time I got to the corner, there were about 8 cops and they were looking at what appeared to be a small bullet hole in the window of the 2A bar. It was on the side facing 2nd St and toward the middle on the bottom. It might have been a bb gun — hole wasn't that big. Did you hear anything on this?

We did not hear anything about this. Anyone?

The man in the window at 9 Second Ave.

On Saturday, I was walking on Second Avenue when I noticed a man standing in the window upstairs at 9 Second Ave. (aka 7 1/2 Second Ave.). Not a big deal, except I thought that everyone had already moved out in advance of the demolition.

I circled around and took better look... He seemed to be intently staring out the window, perhaps taking in the view one last time...

Heh. Well! Perhaps the mannequin has been there and I just never noticed it... or maybe someone placed it there upon moving out. Maybe give the construction workers pause.

BFF Bikes

As part of the Bicycle Film Festival 2011 this weekend... the BFF Street Festival Today took to East Second Street between First Avenue and Second Avenue earlier today ... where Bobby Williams paid a visit...

Former Ruby Lounge becoming a residence on East Second Street

Over on Second Street between Avenue A and Avenue B, there's activity at the long-dormant space that once housed something called Ruby Lounge.

And, in a bit of a surprise, it appears that another bar or retail space won't be coming soon here. According to the DOB, workers are converting the space into residential use.

Oh, never mind about that whole 'breaking news' on East Second Street thing

Heh. Well! Upon closer inspection, it appears that the DOT closed off Second Street between Avenue A and Avenue B so that WABC can film crews filling potholes...

Thanks to Samo for the photos.

Breaking: Something big happening on East Second Street

We don't know yet... but Samo sends along this shot... East Second Street between Avenue A and Avenue B is blocked off... news crews on the scene...

[Updated: Oh, never mind!]

Back at the Marble Cemetery

Our Bobby Williams happened by the New York City Marble Cemetery again yesterday on East Second Street ... This time, a lone worker was shoveling the lawn... Bobby says he yelled twice to the worker, but the man did not look up... We're just a little curious to learn more what was happening here.

Gothamist got the scoop yesterday. (By calling? Who knew they had a phone at the cemetery...) Cemetery officials say there will soon be a burial there, and crews are preparing the lawn for the ceremony.

I'm fascinated by the history here at this rather crumbling green oasis. (Read more about it here.) You may also search interments listed by vault here.

About the hole in ground at the Marble Cemetery

Here we are at the Marble Cemetery on East Second Street...EV Grieve contributor Bobby Williams took these shots yesterday ... he noted the activity, though no one was around to ask things like What in God's name is going on here!

Regardless, please don't let your overactive, sensationalist minds think this is something about, say, grave robbing or zombies or explosives ... We're certain there's a logical explanation for this... Like!

a) Routine cemetery maintenance
b) A new theme bar called Lucky Stiffs
c) Hyperlocal blogger misunderstands the expression "digging for a story"
d) Death + Company is moving
e) Longtime tenants forced out by rent hike
f) Shake Shack

Or maybe you have a better idea...

[Updated: Thanks to Gothamist for the link... and some answers!]

A discarded Cherry Eight machine on East Second Street between Avenue B and Avenue C...

Sadly, its days of hi-lo double ups (for amusement only!) are over.

Today's forecast: 80 percent chance of confetti

Yesterday on Second Street near Avenue B. Looks like snow, but it's actually confetti or some important shredded documents...

Under watchful eye of TV news crews, the Icicle Audi is freed

TV news crews are still on the scene of this afternoon's biggest story involving a frozen car... Anyway, the DEP is on East Second Street to repair the underground water break...

Meanwhile, crews moved the Icicle Audi a few hundred feet down Second Second... where several photographers were taking the car's picture...

Why the East Village will be remembered for the Great Winter of 2010-2011

Yesterday, courtesy of RyanAvenueA, we learned about a sinkhole and an Icicle Audi on Second Street...

Gothamist has more on the story ... As they note, the car has come to symbolize the Great Arctic Blast of Jan. 24, 2011©. Gothamist spotted three news vans parked on that block this morning.

Meanwhile, CBS 2 tracks down the car's owner, who has the right attitude about material possessions: “It could be worse like if that was me or a family member covered in ice that wouldn’t be good; so it’s all relative.” (A leaky pipe under the street caused this, per CBS 2.)

The Icicle Audi is the latest East Village ride to become an Icon for the Great Winter of 2010-2011©. Our bike, which we never really named.

On East Second Street, a sink hole and an Icicle Audi

Thanks to RyanAvenueA for this shot... of a large hole in the middle of Second Street near Second Avenue...

Come spring, we'll move the cars, throw around some deck chairs, and open a Shake Shack here.

Oh, and here's a closer look at the new icicle Audi model.

[Updated] Report: Man wounded in Second Street shooting

DNAinfo is reporting that a man was shot last night following a family dispute at 225 East 2nd Street between Avenue B and Avenue C.

News crews are currently on the scene. One passerby was told: "All I got was 2 shot dead on sidewalk." (Not true...)

The Post reports that the two men who were arguing are cousins. The Local East Village reports that a resident said there was a shooting at the same building last summer.

Own a 'Bird's nest in the sky' on East Second Street

Wow. I've seen a few listings for East Village penthouses in my time... and this one at 213 E. Second St. just east of Avenue B could be one the more awesomer (awesomest?) one yet ... The unit hit Streeteasy yesterday for $2.3 million.

Deep breaths as you prep to stomach the listing:

CARRIAGE HOUSE CONDOMINIUM #8... the BIRDS NEST IN THE SKY... a 4 Level Townhouse Condominium... 3 BEDROOM SUITES/ 4 BATHS, each a private domain with a view of the Empire State Building from every floor. On the top floor, the LIVING and ENTERTAINMENT LEVEL is flooded with SUNLIGHT from glass walls, glass roof and hidden light sources. Perched above... the INDOOR/OUTDOOR SOLARIUM with BATH and MAGNIFICENT MIDTOWN VIEWS and an adjoining PRIVATE TERRACE with a HIDDEN STAIR TO COMPLETELY PRIVATE ROOF with 180 degree exposure. All for the discriminating and esoteric-by-nature purchaser. CARRIAGE HOUSE CONDOMINIUM in the heart of the historic EAST VILLAGE...steps from the BOWERY HOTEL and the NEW MUSEUM...blocks from WHOLE FOODS...SCHILLERS LIQUOR BAR and THE HOTEL ON RIVINGTON...landscape to the cultural and artistic movements of the 20th century, now transformed into the hippest neighborhood and burgeoning new art district.

Got all that about the neighborhood? Anyway, a few more views for you...

According to Streeteasy, Corcoran first listed this home in November 2008 for $3.1 million. After a 24 percent price cut in the next few months, the home was removed from the market. Prudential Elliman then had the listing, which it posted in May 2009 for $2.45 million.

The other unit in the building is available for $2 million.

"Inexpensive eco-friendly" Italian restaurant coming to old Graceland space

The signs posted at the former Graceland space provide the details... eventually the owners will want a sidewalk cafe here...

And if you notice the address, it's 150 E. Second St., which also happens to be the address of Nicky's. I asked the folks at Nicky's if this meant they are moving. However, a family member said the restaurant is just for the Graceland space. The family member said they will find out in another four weeks if they keep the East Village Nicky's location. (They also have a shop in Boerum Hill and one coming to near City Hall...)

Meanwhile, the new Italian restaurant is one of many up for CB3/SLA review on June 14.
