Following the trash bag on East Sixth Street

Meant to post this earlier... but actual news happened... Spotted this morning on East Sixth Street at Avenue A...

... and on the other side of the cars that are practically touching on the street...

Who wants to diagram what happened here?

OK, who put the large dog carrier in this tree on East Sixth Street?

Josie's (and Sophie's and Mona's) co-owner Richard Corton passed these on to us from this afternoon... spotted in a tree near Josie's on East Sixth Street between Avenue A and Avenue B...

Sorry to say, we do not know, like, how or why this is in the tree. Perhaps you know? Or have a guess?

Updated:

Oh! Someone just mentioned that this has been up there since Sandy...?

So, moving along... how do we get it down?

Fire at 518 E. Sixth St. last night

We heard reports of a fire last night around 10 on East Sixth Street... A few more details have come it... the fire occurred in a second-floor apartment in the back of No. 518 between Avenue A and Avenue B.

According to EVG reader Emily, who witnessed the FDNY on the scene:

"We saw bright lights and heard glass shattering ... there were firefighters running up and down the fire escapes, through the building, shattering all the windows with crow bars. There was smoke flowing from the building."

And here are two photos of the rear of the building from this morning...

Anyone else have more details?

'Many opportunities' for new-to-market Sixth Street building

407 E. Sixth St. is now back on the market for $3.5 million. And the listing (via Corcoran) has a familiar tone to it... single-family conversion... available air rights...

On a prime East Village block between Avenues 1st and A, this historic, Italianate style, 5 story townhouse is located around the corner from Tompkins Square Park. Boasting a generous 21 feet of building width, 5000sf of interior space and lot depth of 91 feet with a beautiful rear garden, this home affords many opportunities for use including single family conversion, condominium conversion, live/work use or multi unit rentals.

Currently configured as 5 full floor apartments, the ground floor allows for commercial use. The property is NOT in a landmark zone and has additional available air rights of over 3500 buildable square feet. This house has been lovingly owned and occupied by the same family for over 50 years and will be delivered vacant. Bring your architect.

Anyway, this property briefly hit the market before ... and was promptly delisted several times, in November 2009 and April 2011, per Streeteasy.

And this is one of many buildings that have been for sale with both air rights and single-family aspirations.... such as this one on Avenue D ... this one on Avenue B ... or this one on Seventh Street ...

David Schwimmer to have his very own Central Perk on East Sixth Street

A tipster points us to 335 E. Sixth St., where work continues on the renovated storefronts (two combined into one) ... per the tipster, a cafe-coffee shop with a small food menu is in the works... not many other details are available right yet... (and there are a few resident complaints with the DOB about an "illegal/improper" vent/exhaust in the back...)

...and it's just steps from David Schwimmer's incoming mansion on the block between First Avenue and Second Avenue... No word if the new coffee shop will include an orange couch.

The main event on East Sixth Street at First Avenue

@JacobDAnderson passes along this info:
Replacing a gas main at 6th St. at 1st Ave. Worker said they'll be done in a couple weeks.

La Betola now open on East Sixth Street

As we first pointed out back on March 19, a new espresso bar was coming soon to 514 E. Sixth St. between Avenue A and Avenue B ... (read that post here) ...

The cafe with a handful of seats opened on Saturday. Hilary on 6th, who sent the above photo, gives it high marks... Another reader noted that the proprietors, John and Jessie, will be featuring the work of local artists on the cafe walls. First up: photographer Erica Read.

Didn't hear about other things, such as type of coffee they serve, food and WiFi... will swing by for a report later... Meanwhile, if you go, then let us know what you think...

The sound of storage on East Sixth Street

Yesterday, EVG reader Bill Stepp noticed some activity at the long dormant storefront at 340 E. Sixth St. ...

... most recently the home of Tribal Soundz, the world music shop that closed in the fall of 2008.

Since then, the storefront has sat empty. Bill saw three men "unloading and moving what looked like kitchen equipment."

New business?

"One told me it will be used as storage."

Perhaps it will be a storage unit for the Schwimmers across the way.

Anyway, there aren't any new work permits on file with the DOB to provide any further clues here. Meanwhile, for a little more history, Jeremiah wrote about Tribal Soundz back in the fall of 2008 here.

Michael had to go to Rikers; will be back

Michael has been sleeping in front of a renovated storefront on East Sixth Street. Next to the incoming Schwimmer Manor, actually.

This note appeared this week. As you can see, he had to go to Rikers, either as a visitor or guest. Not sure which.

His blankets are also stored here.

Purple Ginger now open on East Sixth Street

Purple Ginger, a Thai and noodle restaurant, opened here on East Sixth Street just east of Avenue A on Sunday. They're not doing deliveries just yet (so, no to-go menus to browse...).

This space had previously been home to Sixth Street Kitchen, which never reopened after being destroyed by a fire in January 2011.

Meanwhile, let us know if you try this place ...

Revisiting the East Sixth Street sinkhole

Just checking in again on the sinkhole that formed and opened yesterday on East Sixth Street between Avenue A and Avenue B... it shut down the street for several hours while workers rescued a truck tire and what not.

How's it looking this morning?

Fixed! Or, repaired! Or, filled in! (Temporarily so, for the most part.)

And we were hoping to do this again if the city didn't fix it so quickly...

Sinkhole closes East Sixth Street

The block between Avenue A and Avenue b remains closed for now... depending on who you speak with, a truck either got stuck in the sinkhole or caused the sinkhole late this afternoon. Various city types got the truck's tire out of the hole... and a crew is on the scene now to repair it...

...and that's enough photos, Bobby Williams!

...and from Matt LES_Miserable ...

David Schwimmer vs. The Coen Brothers on East Sixth Street

Been a busy few days on East Sixth Street between Second Avenue and First Avenue... The Coen Brothers are back filming "Inside Llewyn Davis." The trucks and all that are parked along East Sixth Street. (The crew seems to be filming inside 110 Second Ave.)

[Yesterday, by Bobby Williams]

Meanwhile, construction continues at Chez Schwimm... where the pallets of cinder blocks await ....

[Early this morning, via EVG]

After the various work crews arrived today for their respective jobs, a resident along here noted, "The street is practically nonexistent as the Haddad's vans (where is Justin Timberlake?) are taking over from the Schwimmer cranes, making it impossible for [the construction workers] to close the street at will, as they often do – for deliveries, etc."

The Coen Brothers crew will also be filming tomorrow, then the street can be returned to the Schwimmers.

Sonar Gaow 'temporarily closed due to a plumbing problem'

That's the sign on the gate outside Sonar Gaow, one of the Indian restaurants on East Sixth Street... Just so happens to coincide with a closure last Thursday via the Department of Health, who handed out 49 violation points for the usual various critters.

This is one of those places that people have complained about for being "dirty" in the past, such as this post from Eater in 2008.

New trees grow on East Sixth Street

In keeping with our positive theme here today...EV Grieve reader Creature notes the following: "We lament the destruction of trees, so I thought it would be nice to celebrate some new ones. There are four of them, planted yesterday ... on Sixth Street, south side, toward First Avenue."

Ko-Z not looking very open anymore on Sixth Street

Also while walking on East Sixth Street Friday evening... We noticed that Ko-Z was closed. We checked again on Saturday and Sunday evenings too. Closed. We wrote about the small Thai eatery just a few weeks ago. We had tried the food and liked it. The owner prepared our sandwich with great pride... enough pride that it took him maybe 15 minutes to do so. Which is fine. We weren't in a hurry. But we were the only people there. We wondered what happened if there was a crowd or an order for delivery...? We only ever saw the owner working.

Perhaps this is all just temporary.

The restaurant had just opened in last September.

So who has eaten at Ko-Z noodle shop on East Sixth Street?

Well, we missed this one...

Turns out that the tiny Thai eatery between Avenue A and Avenue B has been open for more than a month.... Has anyone tried it?

Bad news for Joe's Bar

On Friday night, we walked by Joe's Bar, one of our favorite places, and the bar on East Sixth Street between Avenue B and Avenue A was closed...

The last time that we noticed Joe's was closed (in July) ... it turned out to be a false alarm... this time, though — the DOH temporarily closed them last week. The DOH hit them with 71 violation points. Some of them seemingly rinky-dink. ("Food Protection Certificate not held by supervisor of food operations.")

But. A well-placed tipster says that Joe's has been on a month-to-month lease ... worse, Joe's health may be an issue... The tipster thinks the bar might be done for now.

Extra:
Marty After Dark paid a visit to Joe's back in May.

More photos of the uprooted tree on East Sixth Street

Following up on our earlier post about the downed tree on East Sixth Street just east of Avenue A ...

EV Grieve reader Elizabeth Frayer of New York Natives ... sent along these next three shots of the Japanese Pagoda tree ... the Parks Department and FDNY are on the scene...

And from EV Grieve reader Carl Bentsen ...

As several people have pointed out...the base of the tree looks rotted out... without any/many roots...
