Dance Tracks sign turns green

Back in March, the Monk Thrift shop relocated to the long-dormant Dance Tracks space on Third Street near First Avenue.

And we asked: Wonder if Monk will keep the Dance Tracks sign?

Well, no, the new owner said...

Anyway, as EV Grieve reader Steph has noted in the photo below, the Dance Tracks sign has now been painted over...

Over at PS 63 on East Third Street between Avenue A and First Avenue...

Lovely townhouse with bucolic gardens on East Third Street ready for "creative expansion"

There is an ivy-covered townhouse at 316 E. Third St. near Avenue D that looks lovely from the outside this time of year... And it just went on the market Tuesday for $3.995 million ...

Here's the listing:

This unique offering comprises 2 contiguous lots, 316 and 318 East 3rd Street, together forming an unusual L-shaped area that is 48' wide in the front, over 67' wide in the rear and 105' deep.

The existing structure is a 22.5' wide, 4 story brick townhouse circa 1900 with period details that requires renovation and is delivered vacant. The townhouse is surrounded on 3 sides by bucolic garden, open lawn and mature trees.

However bucolic... what are the chances that this space will be long for the neighborhood?

Check out the rest of the listing:

The townhouse itself is not landmarked, and there are approximately 22,900 buildable square feet available to the purchaser of these combined 2 lots, offering myriad opportunities for creative expansion. Located one block north of Houston in the vibrant Lower East Side, one block east of the famed Nuyorican Poets Café, in an area alive with restaurants, museums, specialty shops and nightlife.

All square footage and buildable potential should be independently verified by an architect.

Are these RVs now BFFs?

The other day we mentioned the RV that showed up on East Third Street ... in the general vicinity of where the Free Willie Nelson usually moors. The Free Willie had to park a block to the east...Trouble in Camperdise?

Well! As this photo sent by EV Grieve reader Creature shows, the two seem to be getting along just fine on Third Street east of First Avenue...

Happy campers? The Free Willie Nelson gets some competition on East Third Street

The Free Willie Nelson RV has become a familiar site on East Third Street near First Avenue...

Now, it appears to be getting some competition... I spotted this beaut the other day on the same block... (the Free Willie Nelson was parked east of First Avenue...)

Also, someone purporting to be the owner of the Free WIllie Nelson recently left me this note:

Thank you for your kind remarks about the Free Willie Nelson. Unlike every other vehicle parked in the streets of manhattan the Free Willie Nelson gives back to the community with a nice deck on the rear where people can sit and smoke, eat a snack, sit in the sun and watch the world go by, or chat. Often my friends come by and we sit inside and jam. It's worth noting the Free Willie Nelson is the same size as my apartment, there by doubling my living space. Unlike my apartment it costs about $800 per year to own and it transports up to sixteen people out to the Mermaid Parade, Floyd Bennett Field, Dead Horse Bay, Wood-stock or away from ground zero on that terrible day.

This summer we are talking about putting on a rooftop garden.

I know that not everyone is going to get it or like it but if you take a man in the street poll, except for the people who want the parking spot, most all really like it.

This is a ride for the nomadic spirit, the open road and a romantic time in our history when people weren't afraid to boldly just go.

For the record: Mark me down for getting it and liking it.

Haven't seen it in a little while, though.

Happy Holidays from the Hells Angels

Yeah, they put up some lights every year on their Third Street HQ. For some reason I never took a picture of it, though...and the setting makes for a fine holiday greeting with the snow...

Belgian Ale House crazy enough for "crazy landlord"

Remember that "crazy landlord" sign on the corner of Third Street and Second Avenue that we told you about back in March?

Thanks to an EV Grieve reader who sent along the following shot... we now know who was just crazy enough to take over this long-vacated space...The Belgian Ale House.

This will just be one of many items to be addressed on Sept. 14 in what promises to be an EPIC SLA & DCA Licensing Committee meeting.

P.S.

On Sunday, the corner served again as a makeshift flea market...

Everything that you've ever wanted to know about the "Free Willie" Nelson RV on Third Street (and no -- he's not inside...)

Last month, I did a post on the "Free Willie" Nelson RV that has been parked on Third Street between First Avenue and Second Avenue...

It continues to intrigue...thanks to the EV Grieve reader who pointed me to the FAQs the owner has posted on the side of the RV...

And commenter Eliza has been inside! "The walls are choc-filled with fascinating trinkets & is rather spacious. hooray for this whale!"

"I fucking hate the changes that have happened. I’d prefer drug dealers and criminals to the yuppie shit that goes on here now"

This week's Time Out features "Great Walks," the best outdoor treks in the city. They select a stroll through the East Village, dubbing it the "Public Eye Watch." Good people watching, you know.

Here's one of their stops:

If there isn’t a swarm of roaring motorcycles outside the cute little brick facade of the Hells Angels’ HQ (77 E 3rd St between First and Second Aves) — rumored site of drug deals and racketeering since 1969 — there’s probably at least a pair of grizzled bikers watching the leggy denizens of nouveau East Village go by. “I lived here 25 years,” croaks one yellow-toothed Angel who declined to give his name before almost literally throwing us off his turf. “What do you mean people-watching? I fucking hate the changes that have happened. I’d prefer drug dealers and criminals to the yuppie shit that goes on here now.” Hurry on to Second Avenue and don’t look back.

P.S.
You may also do the "Sweet Tooth Walk" on the LES.

Crazy like a landlord

That storefront that has been vacant for what seems like years on Second Avenue at East Third Street (northeast corner) has a new "for rent" sign...

...the likes of which we can't recall having ever seen... is this creative real-estate marketing or the work of a prankster? Or both!
