An East Village construction job that's seemingly on schedule

Seeing the empty lots between Avenue C and Avenue D from 1987 in the photos above reminded me... Haven't checked in on the Dona Petra Santiago Apartments on East Ninth Street between Avenue C and Avenue D. Plans call for an eight-story, 57-unit facility for seniors.

And here's how things are going... At the start of construction in November 2009, officials said work would be completed by the winter of 2011...

... seems as if they're right on schedule....

One restaurant, two buildings

Back in September, we first saw the construction-netting-free new apartment building at 92 Seventh St. ... in the former garden of the Miracle Grill ... At that time, we also noted the "for lease" signs up around the corner in the Miracle Grill space on First Avenue...

I noticed that a sign recently went up advertising the groundfloor space on Seventh Street too... I didn't realize that the two spaces were connected. The listing mentions 112 First Avenue (AKA 92 East 7th Street).

In addition, the three-bedroom unit here at 92 originally listed at $5,995 is now down to $5,495.

The Lee expects full occupancy by March 31

Been awhile since we heard any updates on the Lee, the low-income housing development and training center on East Houston and Pitt Street developed by Common Ground, a Manhattan-based nonprofit.

BoweryBoogie had a report back in February on how the 12-story building was shaping up. Staring at it from the street today, it looks awfully close to being completed...

We asked the folks at Common Ground for the latest.

"The Lee is nearing completion and many applications for the low-income units have been received," Lyle Churchill, the senior director for external affairs at Common Ground, told me via e-mail. "The building will 'rent-up' in phases, and we expect full occupancy by March 31, 2011."

He also said that the tenant composition remains as originally stated upon the start of construction in 2008: "In providing stable homes for 263 adults, Common Ground will reserve 104 units for formerly homeless individuals, 105 units for low-income workers, and 54 units for young adults at risk for homelessness."

Former Miracle Grill garden space sprouts $6K apartments

As mentioned earlier today, the former Miracle Grill space is on the market. And the eatery's garden is now an apartment building at 92 Seventh St. ... which, coincidentally enough, has just been revealed after months of hiding behind the scaffolding and sidewalk shed, etc., etc.

So here's what it looks like...

Looks pretty decent as far as these things go. But what will be happening on the inside?

I took a look at the listings.

There are studios going for $1,950. And there are photos...

...and the roof deck... (UFO!)

The apartments get bigger... There's a three-bedroom (convertible to four!) going for $5,995. Description:
Brand Spanking New! Luxury 3BR Conv 4BR Bedroom With Balcony, High Ceilings, Floor To Ceiling Windows, White Custom Cabinets, Black Corian Counters, Stainless Appliances, Key Elevator, Video Intercom and Laundry Room on Premises.

Hmm... home for a family or a party pad?

Easy as 123 eeeeeeeeeee

We were watching a worker up on 123 Third Ave. at 14th Street the other day ... he was wearing a safety harness and everything ... Still, given our fear of heights, seeing this made us a little queasy...

Former Miracle Grill garden not-so-suddenly looks like a condo

Has it really been nearly three years since the Miracle Grill/Imagine garden was ko'd...? This space will soon be home to a six-story, eight-unit residential building that was designed by Andrew Fredman. (Jeremiah reported on this for Curbed back in August 2008...)

Anyway, workers removed the construction netting this past week, giving us a better idea of what Seventh Street's new neighbor will look like...

And, for the record, I echo Jeremiah's sentiments about this space: "Not that I had great love for the Miracle Grill, but I'm sad to say its garden is about to sprout a condo that's taller than its neighbors."

2 Cooper Square looking for some "masculine, attractive, intelligent" Clive Owens types with kids — but, lordy, not kids who actually live with them!

Well, if you've been following along, then you seen our little 2 Cooper Square grow up right before eyes on Cooper Square at Fourth Street.... The 15-story rental-retail combo is coming along nicely....

Now! The difficult part. Getting people to move in. So we'd better get some sexy dude types to make us swoon... The casting call has gone out for the "2 Cooper Building Brochure and Web footage" project. An EV Grieve Reader and actor sent along the notice....

And the lead: Male / 40 to 50 / Caucasian

"Masculine, attractive, intelligent, a Javier Bardem or Clive Owen type occupation is not easily guessed, possibly has teenage kids who don't live with them"

They're also requesting submissions for extras from "New Jersey, New York, Puerto Rico."

More scaffolding for St. Brigid's

After receiving photos from a reader on Friday morning, I had to go over and see the exterior work being done on St. Brigid's on Avenue B and Eighth Street for myself... There was plenty of activity here on Saturday...

Workers begins shoring up St. Brigid's exterior wall (and crack)

Thanks to the EV Grieve reader for these photos.... As the renovation continues at St. Brigid's on Avenue B and Eighth Street, crews are setting up scaffolding this morning to start one of the major challenges of this project: repairing the large crack on the north side, which is partially detached from the church. (The Villager had an article on the architectural plans last March)

Here's a closer look....

(Updated) 536 E. 13th Street is a real dump now

All work has stopped at 536 E. 13th St. near Avenue B at the site of a stalled six-story apartment/condo....

The construction here caused cracks in the foundation at the building next door...and now someone is using the site to dump garbage. Thanks, rampant development!

A former neighbor checks in via the comments.

I lived on the second floor of 530 East 13th until last January. Ours was the apartment with the terrace overlooking this "space". There were three huge trees which gave a beautiful dappled effect on a sunny day. Then in August '08 the so-called construction began. I came home from work one day to discover that all three trees had been felled. Work stalled almost immediately, but by then it was too late, and our apartment became infested with rodents almost overnight. I disposed of 11 mice between August and December (and those were just the ones I caught).
