EV Grieve Eatery Etc.: 1st sign of Pride and Joy; $1 slices at Vinny Vincenz; and more

As we first reported in November, the former Lucky Cheng's space on First Avenue will become the first NYC outpost for renowed BBQ chef Myron Mixon's Pride & Joy BBQ... and signs are up to help direct traffic for deliveries...

... we don't recall the part about "draft house" and "honky-tonk" ... why does that put the fear in us?

Anyway, hopefully Pride & Joy will have good ventilation...

-----

You've noticed the proliferation of $1 (or 99-cent!) slice places around... especially on East 14th Street and nearby First Avenue... Papa John's and Joey Pepperoni both offer cheap slices on First ... and on East 14th Street, there's the new 99-cent place as well as another Joey Pepperoni... not to mention 7-Eleven...

So it may not be a huge surprise that Vinny Vincenz Pizza on First Avenue near East 14th Street is now selling a $1 slice, as Crazy Eddie pointed out last week...

Well, we'll take anything from Vinny's anytime over these other plastic factories...

-----

Several people have asked if we know when the new Nevada Smiths space is opening on Third Avenue near East 13th Street... to be honest, we've lost track of what's happening here... DNAinfo got an inside look at the new space last summer, and the projected opening date was August at that time... According to a Sept. 5 post on the Nevada Smiths Facebook page: "The new location should be ready by October." A Dec. 22 post said that they'd be open in January...

Here's how it looked this past Thursday...

Meanwhile, you can still watch the matches at Nevada's temp home at Webster Hall...

EV Grieve Eatery Etc.: Little Italy Pizza space for rent; Gruppo signs up on Avenue B

On Christmas Eve day, EVG regular Stephen Popkin spotted workers quickly cleaning out the short-lived Little Italy Pizza joint at 23 Third Ave. at St. Mark's Place. How quick was it? Noted one commenter:

I passed by just as the workers were hilariously loading trays of fresh pizza dough along with half used cans of tomato sauce and olives in the back of a white van while trying not to spill them all over the place. A guy carrying out a deli cheese slicer said they needed to leave in a hurry.

The space is now for rent... the listing isn't online just yet...

-----

Signage update on Gruppo, which is relocating to a new home down Avenue B... to 98 Avenue B between East Seventh Street and East Sixth Street ...

-----

And there's this...

Drunken Santas apparently stole it that one awful day ... it randomly appeared Saturday night on East 11th Street between First Avenue and Second Avenue...

EV Grieve Eatery Etc.: Nino's 2.0 back open; crepes for East 7th Street

The newly remodeled Nino's on Avenue A at St. Mark's Place is back open after a bout of the DOH... Inspectors found 9 violations points during a revisit on Monday...

-----

Salon Champu moved from 122 E. Seventh St. to new digs on East Fourth Street ... Dave on 7th got word that the former salon space will be home to a cafe specializing in crepes...

-----

There's a new broker for the former dry cleaners at 137 First Avenue next door to Joe Dough on First Avenue... the new sign says that the landlord will now consider "food use" ...

We didn't spot the listing online at Bond just yet... so we don't know what the asking rent is here...

-----

Verso opened in May 2011 on Avenue C at Eighth Street. The Italian bistro hasn't been open since Sandy's floodwater filled up the restaurant's basement ... earlier in the week, Matt_LES noted the following back-rent noticed taped to the eatery's front door...

EV Grieve Eatery Etc.: Blue Ribbon Fried Chicken says hello (sort of); Flea Market Cafe closes for renovations

Didn't notice this one... On Avenue A, the concepts keep changing at the former Avenue A Sushi, which closed in the spring of 2010. It has been the Avenue A Bistro Bar. The Avenue A Bistro Cafe. Anyway, it's now called La Lune, a hookah bar serving Lebanese cuisine...

Previously on EV Grieve:
Avenue A Sushi is confusing us

----------

The first sign of the incoming Blue Ribbon Fried Chicken has arrived on the northwest corner of Second Avenue and East First Street...

The Blue Ribboners are aiming for a beer-wine license at this month's CB3/SLA meeting next Monday...

----------

Oh. Just a photo of these guys repainting the Phebe's sign on the Bowery at East Fourth Street on Saturday...

----------

And on Avenue A, the Flea Market Cafe is closed for renovations, as the sign shows...

To be honest, we've lost track of what's happening with the cafe. There have been a lot of rumors about its future, including new ownership.

EV Grieve Eatery Etc.: Angelina Cafe reopens tonight; Turkish fast food bows out of East Ninth

Back in May, we reported that Angelina Cafe was moving across Avenue A to No. 37 . .. RyanAvenueA says that they will start food service tonight ...

----------

Cigkoftem, a Turkish vegetarian fast-food chain founded in 1993, opened its first U.S. location on East Ninth Street back in January ... as we first noted here. In any event, it closed some time in the past two weeks... and the space is for rent...

----------

We happened to be on University Place this past weekend ... and noticed that University Restaurant at East 12th Street was still fairly intact ...

... the diner shuttered after 60 years of continuous service on Sept. 19. The "for rent" sign puts the rent at $39,000 per month...

----------

Starting today, Brooklyn Flea is hooking up with Whole Foods Bowery for a new, rotating restaurant, as Fork in the Road pointed out on Oct. 10.

Per the signage out front, the Mexican sandwiches and tacos from Cemita's are up first...

----------

And Table Verta opened Thursday on East Seventh Street (at the former Taureau) ... Per the sign on the door, it's BYOB for now... Plus, cash only until they have Internet access.

EV Grieve Eatery Etc.: New awning for HiFi; 'training event' for L'Apicio

Just a few random items from the last few days/nights...

----------

We like HiFi on Avenue A. We also like restaurants/bars with awnings (mostly). That said. HiFi now has a new-look front with an awning...

[Bobby Williams]

----------

Over on East First Street in the Shoppes at Avalon Bowery Place, L'Apicio is closer to opening... there was a soft opening of sorts last night...

Sign called it a "training event." The New York Times noted that "some entrees, like roast pig, will be available family-style, for sharing." And apparently they have good meatballs.

And here is the kitchen entrance.... adorned with new art...

Did you get to say goodbye to those GIANT SUSHI ROLL PHOTOS along here?

[Last summer]

----------

And another sign of fall: People's Pops recently closed for the season on East Seventh Street...

----------

And a reader noted the chalkboard outside outside Fresco Gelateria on Second Avenue...

EV Grieve Eatery Etc.: AAA Amici Pizza still open; IHOP still smells

A few weeks ago, we noted that Taureau at 127 E. Seventh St. moved away from the East Village. Our friends at the Big Gay Ice Cream Shop told us that Taureau owner Didier Pawlicki was opening another French bistro in the space... So, the renovations continue at the space, and it looks as if it will be called Table Verta...

----------

The Post checked in yesterday with a piece about the East 15th Street residents sick and tired of the noise and smell coming from the IHOP. (We wrote about it last November here and here.)

By the way, the building that houses the IHOP on East 14th Street is still for sale. Still asking $14.5 million. Here's the listing.

----------

And several readers told us that the Starbucks sidewalk seating has returned to the Second Avenue/East Ninth Street location after all that expired permit hoopla with the city... Uh, of course, this photo from Saturday doesn't actually show the tables and chairs out for the day just yet...

-----------

And after being closed for a few days on Third Avenue at East 12th Street, AAA Amici Pizza was back open for the weekend, as this photo by EVG reader ‏@robbyohara ...

[Updated] EV Grieve Eatery Etc.: AAA Amici Pizza looking closed; Glaze starting delivery

EVG reader Jodi noted that AAA Amici Pizza (formerly New Amici and Due Amici, right?) on Third Avenue at East 12th Street has been closed... the gates were down when we went by last evening. And no one is answering the phone. See if we can learn more about what's happening here today... (Another victim of the Nicoletta Effect?) Also, a new cafe is in the works adjacent here in the the long-closed D&M Convenience store on East 12th Street.

UPDATED: AAA Amici Pizza is back open...

----------

The folks at Glaze — the Seattle-style teriyaki place on Fourth Avenue near East 13th Street — sent us a note saying that they are now delivering to parts of the area... from 11 am until 10:30 pm ... for now, the delivery zone spans from Avenue A to Sixth Avenue, and from East Fourth Street to 23rd Street.

Have you eaten here? I tried it and liked it...

They are also up for a beer-wine license during Monday's CB3-SLA committee meeting.

----------

And Zagat noted that the Filipino Gastropub called Jeepney on First Avenue near East 12th Street opened last night (read more about it here) ... and maybe they are saving money on vowels and stuff on the sign...

EV Grieve Eatery Etc.: Gruppo moving news; Maltida's new outpost

A reader sends along a photo of the chalkboard outside Gruppo on Avenue B ... As noted earlier, the pizzeria will be moving into the former Layalay space, the onetime B&T hookah hotspot at 98 Avenue B, from its current home at 186 Avenue B .. per the sign, this will happen in the "late fall."

----------

And Matilda is now serving tapas at La Zarza on First Avenue (as of last night) ... However, the Maltida folks said that they will continue to serve their Tuscan-Mexican cuisine from their main outpost on East 11th Street near Avenue C...

----------

EVG reader JB sends along a few photos of Ballaro, the new bakery that opened last week on East Fifth Street between Second Avenue and First Avenue...

Try it yet?

EV Grieve Eatery Etc.: Entrez enters the East Village; another Lucky Cheng's soft opening date

Pomodora, the "pizzaria" on Second Avenue between 10th Street and 11th Street, closed for renovations in late August and never reopened. As we noted, a supervisor at the scene told Blue Glass that the space would soon become some kind of "Italian-French fusion" restaurant.

On Saturday, Blue Glass noted that workers put up the new sign — Entrez Bar & Grill ...though it appears that the Pomodora awning remains ...

So we're not sure which number to call...

----------

San Matteo Panuozzo on St. Mark's Place remains closed... a sign that says they are closed for renovations and will reopen on Tuesday has been in the window for a few weeks...

...and a bad sign: the rent bill is lying on the floor inside the door...

----------

East Village Thai — recently named one of the best Thai places in NYC by the Daily News — had to close for Saturday night.

Per the sign: No gas.

----------

According to the Lucky Cheng's Facebook page: "This Friday, October 5th is our soft opening in Times Square. Grand Opening on October 15th."

[EVG file photo]

The East Village location celebrated its 19th anniversary this past weekend.

EV Grieve Eatery Etc.: Updates on Bikinis, Graffiti and that kind of weird sushi place on the Bowery

Just a quick update on a few previously reported restaurant-bar items...

-----

Plywood is up where Friend House used to be on Third Avenue and East 13th Street... CB3 OK'd the application for this "full‐service American comfort food restaurant" (aka, bar) in June. One of the principals owns and operates two bar-restaurants in White Plains — the Brazen Fox and neighbor Ron Blacks.

-----

Workers have removed the iconic signage at Osaka Vibe Sushi, aka that kind of weird sushi place on the Bowery ... (the DANGER sign is gone too). A small plates place called Wisemen is in the works for the space. (BoweryBoogie has more about it here.)

------

Workers have finally removed the Kate's Joint signage on Avenue B and East Fourth Street ... work continues on the incoming gourmet market...

-----

Several readers noted that Bikinis opened this past weekend at 56 Avenue C. We spoke with Petrit Pula, one of the principals for the Barcelona-style eatery, back in March. You can read that post here.

-----

On East 10th Street, Graffiti, the acclaimed small-plates place from chef Jehangir Mehta, is expanding to the storefront to the east, as we first noted ... into the space last occupied by Atelier Muse ... and you can see that the former bridal boutique is looking like Graffiti ...

-----

And on East Seventh Street, the folks at Gingersnap's Organic have removed the refrigerators with some of the to-go items...

Via Facebook, they told us that they're adding a new smoothie bar, made-to-order juices and more cafe seating...
