Extra Place now home to a Little Free Library

Spotted three people installing this in Extra Place on Saturday morning... and the final product...

...with an explanation about Little Free Library ...

Per The New York Times:

Holding no more than about 20 books for old and young, the 10 new Little Free Libraries — miniature lending libraries where anyone can take or leave a book under the honor system — will pop up all over downtown Manhattan on Saturday afternoon, and will stand until Sept. 1.

And!

Jakab Orsos, the director of the PEN World Voices Festival, which features events and workshops with international authors this week, said he heard about the Little Free Library concept last year and almost immediately decided to bring some to New York.

“It’s such a rich, such a romantic idea,” he said on Thursday, waxing lyrical about the pleasures of literature. “It really restores my faith, this connectedness — how people are actually harboring the beauty of reading and the book and the importance of the book.”

Reminders: Extra Place is open to the public

Spotted this sign the other day in Extra Place, the former alley that ran behind CBGB... And nearly six years on, it seems as if Avalon Bowery Place is still trying to make this "a slice of the Left Bank, a pedestrian mall lined with interesting boutiques and cafes."

As we've cut-n-paste written before, it hasn't been easy here. Businesses have come and gone. It took four years to finally replace the roadway with a sidewalk and add lights.

Do you think this will ever work as a destination location for nightlife, etc.? And do you want to make it too public?

Labor Day story from Extra Place, 1913

From the Library of Congress Flickr page:

11:30 A.M. Jennie Rizzandi, 9 year old girl, helping mother and father finish garments in a dilapidated tenement, 5 Extra Pl., N.Y.C. They all work until 9 P.M. when busy, and make about $2 to $2.50 a week. Father works on street, when he has work. Jennie was a truant, "I staid home 'cause a lady was comin'."

Heidi and Extra Place open today on, uh, Extra Place

A few weeks back, we pointed out two new restaurants (from the same owner) coming soon on Extra Place... Well, they open today.

So, via the press materials: There's Extra Place at No. 8, a namesake restaurant with 50 seats serving Mediterranean fare, and Heidi at No. 6, a smaller Swiss eatery with 20 seats ... both "offering traditional cuisine of their respective regions made with local, high-quality ingredients."

Hours and stuff: Extra Place will be open for lunch and dinner Monday through Friday, 12 p.m. to 2 a.m.; brunch Saturday through Sunday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and dinner 5 p.m. to 2 a.m. Heidi will serve dinner Monday through Sunday, 6 p.m. to 2 a.m.

Diner's Journal has more on the two restaurants here.

[UPDATED] With new restaurant opening this week, will Extra Place finally become a dining destination?

Late last week, workers installed new planters in Extra Place...

[Top two photos by Bobby Williams]

They are part of the sidewalk cafe for a new restaurant called Heidi that is apparently opening some time later this week... that's according to one of the workers at the space this past weekend...

UPDATED 2 p.m.

Heard from the folks helping to open the restaurant. Important clarification here:

"While this week was the original opening timeframe, some construction delays have set the restaurants back. We don’t have an exact date yet, but it’s coming up – just not this week.

"The restaurant at 8 Extra Place will be called Extra Place, and it’s Mediterranean; the one at 6 Extra Place will be called Heidi, and will serve Swiss cuisine. They’re under the same ownership."

We don't know much about what's coming here... well, it looks nice anyway. The proprietors were on April's CB3/SLA agenda. According to documents on file with CB3, the restaurant will serve Swiss and Mediterranean fare... with 16 table and 46 seats... featuring a beer and wine license with a sidewalk cafe...

Anyway, we're sure that one of the excellent restaurant-nightlife sites will have a preview offering more details about the restaurant. We're a little more curious if the new restaurant, which looks to open at 10 a.m., will be the thing to finally help transform Extra Place into some kind of destination...

About five-plus years ago, we first heard of the plans the developers of Avalon Bowery Place had for the former shit-strewn alley that ran behind CBGB — "a slice of the Left Bank, a pedestrian mall lined with interesting boutiques and cafes."

It hasn't been easy. Businesses have come and gone. It took four years to finally replace the roadway with a sidewalk and add lights.

So Extra Place will have two restaurants (the other being Oaxaca Taqueria) with sidewalk cafes... plus, there's the high-end eatery taking over the former Bowery Wine Co. space across East First Street... (And not sure where the promised commissary from DBGBer Daniel Boulud fits into all this... UPDATED: See comments for more on this.) Is this all enough to ward off the ghosts of the Bowery's past?

Opening today: 'Music Machine' in Artist Alley at Extra Place

From the EV Grieve inbox ...

Running May 19, 2012 - November 2012

Works by Sonni
Curated by Keith Schweitzer of MaNY Project
Presented by FABnyc's ArtUp Program

Artist Reception
Saturday, May 19 @ 2PM
Artist Alley @ Extra Place

Music Machine is the second exhibition for FABnyc's ArtUp Program site, Artist Alley @ Extra Place. Artists create work on the pavement alley of the former CBGB's, a cultural marker in NYC's Punk and No Wave scene and fertile ground for a new generation of creative exchange.

About the Artist
Sonni was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina. He began his career by painting murals in different neighborhoods in Buenos Aires, creating a following with his cheerful "characters de faciones" painted in primary colors. He is considered to be part of the first generation of street artists in Argentina. He was commissioned to do a public mural in Buenos Aires subway stations and the Glace Palace Museum. He was also invited to participate in solo and group shows in Argentina, Mexico, Costa Rica, Spain, The United States, Canada and Taiwan. In 2008, he was invited to work with art company FriendsWithYou as Senior Art Director.

Also going on this weekend... NoHo Design District ... here's a map of what's going on where.

Extra lights for Extra Place

The looooooooooooongtime makeover of Extra Place enters its fifth year... Workers just added new strands of lights over the former alley...

(And has anyone seen my catering van that I left parked somewhere?)

And later...

Meanwhile, just noting that Scott James, the Boston-based menswear brand that opened on East First Street in late October, has moved on ...

Apparently it was only supposed to be a pop-up shop... which closed up at the end of January.

Protecting the artwork in Extra Place

Bobby Williams notes today that workers put a protective coating over the artwork on Extra Place...

Wasn't that long ago that workers were quickly removing graffiti as quickly as it went up on Extra Place ...

Extra Place's transformation into 'Artist Alley'

Two Fridays ago, we cut-and-paste the news release posted the information on Artist Alley @ Extra Place. Well, let's just post the thing again:

On Saturday, November 19, Fourth Arts Block (FABnyc) will present Groundbreak, the inaugural exhibit in a rotating public art program for Artist Alley @ Extra Place. This exhibit is the latest in a series of temporary art installations in atypical locations in the East Village/Lower East Side through FABnyc's ArtUp program.

FABnyc recognizes Extra Place as a cultural marker in New York City's Punk and No Wave scene and its potential as fertile ground for a new generation of creative exchange. Abe Lincoln Jr., Jon Burgerman, and Ellis Gallagher are New York based artists who will reclaim the concrete sidewalk as their blank canvas.

And Bobby Williams has been keeping tabs on the progress for part of the week...

Sunday!

Monday!

Tuesday!

All this explains that "birthplace of punk" art.

Anyway, doesn't seem like too long ago when workers were removing the street art/graffiti from here.

Sort of honoring the 'birthplace of punk' in Extra Place

Thanks to EV Grieve reader Spike for sending along these photos from Extra Place — the former piss-filled alley behind CBGB ... On Sunday, Spike saw these behind Riff, the newish Steven Tyler clothing design shop or whatever in the former CBGB Gallery space...

... and lord knows what this is next to it ... the birthplace of the cell phone? A celebration of annoying people with yappy dogs?

Meanwhile, as you may have seen in the front window of Riff, a tribute to the Ramones...

And the real thing one day seemingly a long time ago on Extra Place...

Boston-based menswear brand taking over an Extra Place retail space

Over here on East First Street at Extra Place, a designer is taking over one of the spaces...

It's Scott James ... per the company website, it's a Boston-based menswear brand ... "that encompasses both the sophisticated, casual look of the Italian man along with the playful, color-rich attitude of the American consumer. It is the American approach to Anglo Italian. Rooted in color, texture, and pattern, scott james is a luxury clothing line without the luxury pricing."

And more!

In seeking to please the “artists of living" for whom we build the collection, we are always inspired when we encounter materials of supreme quality. Our school of thought is, “Why not wear cashmere year-round" ...

Anyway, this store takes over from the Tashkent by Cheyenne showroom that closed in the spring...

Lights! Tables! Extra Place ready for action

As we've been noting (and noting and noting), Extra Place has been undergoing an extreme makeover lately... As these photos from yesterday afternoon show, the Place is ready for action ... and, perhaps, more than one food vendor...

Let there be light!

And, an Extra Place flashback to 1978...

And for grins ... from November 2006...

4 years later, Extra Place is finally ready for pedestrians, lights, more tables

After several weeks of renovations, Extra Place is officially no longer a roadway...

More than four years ago, we first heard of the plans the developers of Avalon Bowery Place had for Extra Place — "a slice of the Left Bank, a pedestrian mall lined with interesting boutiques and cafes."

Now, this looks more fitting for whatever kind of food court that the developers of Avalon Bowery Place had envisioned... workers said that lights are coming next...

So, why did it take four years to finally realize all this?

Extra Place is turning into a big sidewalk

We've been watching the work of late on Extra Place. A worker said that they were installing new pipes or something.

Before!

And now look what's happening... it's getting sidewalked!

Oh no! No more skateboarding! Or dogwalking! Or basketball playing! Or "Wonder Woman" posing!

Four years later, maybe it really will look like this some day...

Someone please get Cheetah Chrome on the phone...

'Road repairs' continue on Extra Place

Crews arrived Monday for "road repairs" on Extra Place... (Shouldn't it have been "Place repairs"?) EV Grieve Extra Place correspondent Bobby Williams took these photos.

And Goggla had this photo from Extra Place yesterday...

Meanwhile, I'm starting the rumor that they're putting in a canal ... as part of the Bowery's new Canal District.
