Reminders tonight: See 'Fast Times in Ridgemont High' in Tompkins Square Park

[Debbie and Damone]

In case you missed our post yesterday … the Films in Tompkins series returns tonight with a free screening of "Fast Times at Ridgemont High," which needs no introduction.

And this trailer for the movie sucks.

Sadly, I am not allowed to go. I have seen the movie so many times, I can't help but blurt out lines right before the character does.

This is U.S. History, I see the globe right there!

Hope you had a hell of a piss, Arnold!

"Now, the lady will have the linguini and white clam sauce, and a Coke with no ice."

Sorry! Go! Enjoy! The film starts at sundown. (The gates open at 6.)

Slate of Thursday night films will return to Tompkins Square Park this summer

We originally heard that the Films in Tompkins series was not going to happen this summer in the Park.

However, we've just learned that there will be a slightly abbreviated series starting on July 10, and playing on consecutive Thursday nights until August. (A few August dates are expected as well.)

Only one film has been revealed so far: "The Rocky Horror Picture Show," which will include a Rocky Horror performance/costume contest. More info on the films as it becomes available.

Meanwhile, the Films on the Green series continues in Tompkins Square Park tomorrow night with a screening of "La Haine."

Movie night is a go in Tompkins Square Park

Being a Thursday, it always rains. And it did today! But! The free film ("O Brother Where Art Thou?") in Tompkins Square Park tonight is a go... not much of a crowd yet. (As of 7:30.) In fact, the film's star, George Clooney, is just standing there. Somewhere.

A Films in Tompkins shocker: No rain expected tonight; also, Romeo and Juliet

Waaaay back on June 6, "William Shakespeare's Romeo + Juliet" was to be the first of the free music-movie nights in Tompkins Square Park. It turned out to be the first of six films that got KO'd by foul weather (or the threat of foul weather).

The Films in Tompkins people rescheduled this one for tonight... and, amazingly enough, the forecast doesn't call for any showers. Or rain.

As for the movie, this is the 1996 version directed by Baz Luhrmann ... with Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes.

Speaking of Leonardo, the trailer for Martin Scorsese's "The Wolf of Wall Street" looks pretty good, don't you think?

As for tonight, there's also free pre-movie music from Sweet Street Symphony.

And upcoming in the Park:

Aug. 22 — O Brother Where Art Thou

CANCELED Free tonight in Tompkins Square Park: Chico + Rita (rain optional?)

Per the Films at Tompkins website:

Ugh! Another Thursday and another day of rain. We can't believe it but yet another film has to be canceled due to the weather. We won't be showing Chico & Rita tonight

Tonight's selection is "Chico + Rita," a Spanish animated feature-length film (with Spanish and English languages) directed by Fernando Trueba and Javier Mariscal. It was nominated for the Oscar for Best Animated Feature at this past year's Academy Awards.

The plot:

A gifted songwriter and beautiful singer chase their dreams – and each other – from Havana to New York and Las Vegas. Chico is a young piano player with big dreams. Rita is a beautiful singer with an extraordinary voice. Music and romantic desire unite them, but their journey – in the tradition of the Latin ballad, the bolero – brings heartache and torment.

Find the trailer here.

There's pre-movie music courtesy of the Rebeca Vallejo Trio.

As always, this is weather permitting... If it's a Thursday, then it will rain. And there's a 50 30 percent chance of showers tonight, according to our sources at The Weather Channel this morning. Check the Films in Tompkins Facebook page for updates on tonight's screening. The weather has KO'd five of nine films here this summer.

And upcoming...

Aug. 15 — Romeo + Juliet
Aug. 22 — O Brother, Where Art Thou

Thursday, August 1, 2013

'Rocky Horror Picture Show' cancelled tonight, and Brad is still an asshole

From the Films in Tompkins Facebook page:

UPDATE: Unfortunately, tonight's screening of THE ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW has been canceled due to bad weather.

O Brother! Rain KOs Films in Tompkins Square Park tonight

[Where art thou derecho?]

From the Films in Tompkins Facebook page:

UPDATE: Due to inclement weather, tonight's screening of O BROTHER WHERE ART THOU has been postponed until Thursday, AUGUST 22nd. Films In Tompkins will resume as scheduled next Thursday with RUSHMORE.

Rainy weather caused the cancellation of last Thursday's screening of "Romeo + Juliet," which will now play on Aug. 15.
