Brooklyn's Ribbon Stage is opening for the sold-out Bikini Kill show tonight at Pier 17. 

The video here is for the 75-second  "Rid Myself." As Pitchfork noted, the song "is over before you know it, but for a brief moment, it offers a much-needed dose of upbeat introspection." 

'Use Your Voice'

 

In April 2019 ... Patti Smith and Stewart Copeland joined Choir! Choir! Choir! at the "Onassis Festival 2019: Democracy Is Coming" ... at the Public on Lafayette. 

The choir of 250-strong joined Smith for a version of her 1988 single "People Have The Power."

Broadcast news

 

Broadcast, the English pop-psych band, recently released The Maida Vale Sessions, a rarities collection "charting the band from their first year together to near-international recognition as their sound continued mutating." 

Sadly, lead singer Trish Keenan died from pneumonia in 2011 at age 42.

'Cheap' thrills

 

There's a new video out today via Surfbort, hanging here in Times Square. "Cheap Glue" is off the band's Keep on Truckin' release.

Local faves Hello Mary debuted a new single/video this week... here's guitarist Helena Straight, bassist Mikaela Oppenheimer and drummer Stella Wave with "Looking Right Into The Sun."

Sudan Archives has new music out ... here's "Selfish Soul," a song about women and the celebration of hair.

Out of 'Control'

 

After mentioning Sunflower Bean earlier... here's the video for the band's single "I Don't Have Control Sometimes" — with some East Village locales — from the two-week-old release Headful of Sugar.

Moving through 2022... SoulGlo's Diaspora Problems remains one of the year's critically acclaimed new records.

A look back at 'No Way Out'

 

Howie Pyro, a DJ and longtime veteran of the New York punk and underground scenes, died this week at age 61. 

Here's Pyro with bandmates Jessie Malin, Danny Sage, Michael Wildwood and Richard Bacchus from D Generation. This is "No Way Out" from the band's debut record in 1994.

'Anti-glory' days

 

The debut album from the Chicago-based trio Horsegirl is due out on June 3 via Matador Records. The video here is for a single from the LP, "Anti-glory."

Massive 'A.T.T.A.C.K'

 

Arre! Arre! just released a new record titled We Ride the Universe (PNKSLM). 

While we're waiting for new videos from the Swedish band (described as "Punks from Malmö, Sweden"), here's a clip for "A.T.T.A.C.K" from their 2018 debut.

Headed for a breakdown

 

Francis of Delirium (an up-and-coming duo now living in Luxembourg!) recently released a new full-length release ... the video here is for "The Funhouse." 

And you can catch the band on their first North American tour... out at Warsaw on April 14 and Baby's All Right on April 27.

Bang your 'Head'

 

Something new from the Brooklyn-based A Place to Bury Strangers. The video is for "My Head Is Bleeding," off the band's latest LP ... released on March 11.

Sweetness and light

 

Blushing was a standout band from last week's New Colossus Festival — playing five showcases, including a shoegaze extravaganza at Arlene's Grocery... the Austin, Texas-based quartet recruited shoegaze legend Miki Berenyi from Lush for this single, "Blame."

Broadcast 'News'

 

Local band Beechwood headlines Arlene's Grocery tomorrow night (March 12) ... as part of the New Colossus Festival taking place at several nearby venues through Sunday.

Have the 'Blues'

 

NYC's Wah Together is one of the 100-plus bands playing the New Colossus Festival at neighborhood music venues next week. The band features bassist Phil Mossman (ex-LCD Soundsystem), drummer Vito Roccoforte (the Rapture), producer/guitarist Steve Schiltz (Longwave) and vocalist Jaiko Suzuki. 

The video here is for "You Got the Blues," the second single from the band's debut LP "Let's Wah Together," out today. 

Also, today is a Bandcamp Friday, where all the sales go directly to the artists.

You give love a bad...

 

Dehd's new single, "Bad Love," debuted this week (appropriately enough on Feb. 14 and featuring another rather campy-goofy video — this one is still a fave) ... this is the Chicago-based band's first single from the upcoming album Blue Skies, out on Fat Possum May 27.

And Dehd will be at the Bowery Ballroom on May 24.

Killing me 'Softly'

 

Arlo Parks released a single titled "Softly" at the beginning of the month... a season-appropriate song "about how fragile you feel in the dying days of a relationship when you're still desperately in love." 

The British singer-songwriter is on a bill with Clairo at Radio City on Feb. 24.
