Reader report: Odessa Cafe and Bar will remain open through Sept. 6

[Michael Sean Edwards]

Reliable sources pass along word that the Odessa Cafe and Bar at 117 Avenue A will now remain open through Sept. 6. The Odessa was originally set to close after service this coming Tuesday night ... and eventually become a "a full-service American brasserie restaurant," according to CB3 records.

The closure of Odessa Cafe and Bar will not impact the newer Odessa next door at 119 Avenue A, though we hear that the restaurant will have more of a bar scene later at night.

Reader report: Odessa Cafe closes for good after Aug. 15

Word is spreading among Odessa Cafe and Bar regulars that the space on Avenue A will close for good after Aug. 15.

The closure rumors started last summer after the building at No. 117 was sold to 9300 Realty (owned by Croman Realty).

Paperwork filed ahead of this month's CB3/SLA committee meeting showed that six principals are part of a team who is buying the business ... at least one of which is a "former owner and general manager" of Tribeca's Tiny's & the Bar Upstairs, according to public documents posted on the CB3 website.

And CB3 OK'd the applicant's license, with the stipulations:

• it will operate as a full-service American brasserie restaurant, with a kitchen open and serving
food during all hours of operation,
• its hours of operation will be 11:00 A.M. to 4:00 A.M. all days,
• it will play recorded music at less than entertainment level, and not have live music, DJs,
promoted events, scheduled performances or any event at which a cover fee will be charged,
• it will close any façade doors and windows at 10:00 P.M. every night,
• it will not commercially use any outdoor areas,
• it may have "happy hours" from 5:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M.,
• it will not host pub crawls or party buses

The closure of Odessa Cafe and Bar does not impact the newer Odessa next door at 119 Avenue A... though we hear this Odessa will have more of a bar environment now later in the evening hours.

Former GM from Tribeca's Tiny's & the Bar Upstairs part of team to buy the Odessa Cafe

[Bobby Williams]

We finally have some idea about the fate of the soon-to-be-former Odessa Cafe and Bar on Avenue A. We heard last year at this time that the Odessa would likely vacate before the end of their current lease. According to city documents, 117 Avenue A was sold last summer for just north of $3 million. The LLC for the buyer shares the same address as the notorious 9300 Realty (owned by Croman Realty).

Paperwork filed ahead of the July CB3/SLA meeting shows that six principals are part of a team who is buying the business ... at least one of which is a "former owner and general manager" of Tribeca's Tiny's & the Bar Upstairs, according to public documents posted on the CB3 website. (The name of Tiny's principal and nightlife vet Matt Abramcyk does not appear on the documents.)

The application (PDF) describes that still-unnamed space as a "new American brasserie/bistro" with hours of 11 a.m. to 4 a.m. The plans show 18 tables with 54 seats as well as a bar with seven seats.

We're not too familiar with Tiny's. Here a description via the Tribeca Citizen:

The theme is rustic Americana, with antique tables, lab-style metal chairs, and mismatched plates, and the walls, ceilings, and floors are a patchwork of weathered brick, tin, tile, wood, and pink embossed wallpaper. While the menu is heavy on basics —soups, salads, sandwiches, and sides — there are sophisticated surprises, such as parsley in the beet salad and celery leaves in the sweet-potato-and-apple soup.

The pending sale of the Odessa Cafe and Bar does not impact the newer Odessa at 119 Avenue A...

Applicants looking to take over the Odessa Cafe and Bar off June's CB3/SLA agenda

[Bobby Williams]

Well, as the headline says: The mystery applicants vying for the beloved Odessa Cafe and Bar on Avenue A are no longer on this month's CB3/SLA docket.

We've heard rumors for months now that the old Odessa was on its way out. Meanwhile, looks like you have a little longer to visit (or revisit) the place and, say, take in the movie star portraits hanging behind the bar...

And you never know who might be there.

Is the end nearing for Odessa Cafe and Bar on Avenue A?

We've been hearing rumors since last summer that the Odessa Cafe and Bar's days were numbered at 117 Avenue A. Now the following item appears on the just-released CB3-SLA committee docket for June:

• 117 Ave A Food & Drink LLC, 117 Ave A (op)

There's no other information about the applicants at this point. There is, however, a newish landlord for the building. According to city documents, 117 Avenue A was sold last summer for just north of $3 million. The LLC for the buyer shares the same address as the notorious 9300 Realty (owned by Croman Realty).

And this is what we heard via Shawn Chittle last July: "There are two years left on the Odessa lease, but the hammer may fall sooner than that. Odessa owners are retired and a buyout is possible."
