More on 95 Avenue A: Private chef's lounge and a rum punch bar

Keep seeing more details about what's coming to 95 Avenue A at Sixth Street. Sounds like quite the little empire. This detail is from Metromix:

From a team featuring alum from Mayahuel, Death & Co., and Bourgeois Pig, Carteles is the first of a four-part planned series of Cuban-themed bars and restaurants collectively known as Cienfuegos. The other phases include a rum punch bar, a more formal Cuban restaurant, and a private chef's lounge, but for now this tiny storefront is serving a menu of carefully curated sandwiches.

This all suddenly seems like less of a restaurant and more of a scene.

Dueling sandwich shops on Sixth Street?

Bahn Mi Zon, a Vietnamese sandwich shop on Sixth Street near Avenue A, opened last month.

Meanwhile, as we mentioned yesterday, a new Cuban eatery is opening on Avenue A and Sixth Street. And it looks as if the place — Cienfuegos — will use the storefront behind the restaurant as well...

EV Grieve reader Creature has a good idea of what that space will be used for...as he said yesterday in the comments:

If I'm right that back end will be the sandwich shop. I live upstairs and it will be interesting to watch the Cuban sandwich battle the Vietnamese sandwich on either side of my front door.

Well, at least these places don't/won't have mascots...

Coming soon: Work starts on Cienfuegos at long-dormant (and soon-to-be-expanded) 95 Avenue A

As you may recall, the CB3 enthusiastically approved a liquor license (a new application in a resolution area, no less) for Cienfuegos, a Cuban eatery that will open on the corner of Sixth Street and Avenue A. This prime chunk of EV real estate has sat empty since that place called Le Zoccole shuttered...

Anyway, work permits have been issued for the restaurant, which will be run by folks currently or formerly associated with Mercer Kitchen, Death & Co. and Bourgeois Pig...

And it appears as if the space behind the restaurant is also being utilized....

According to the work permits: "INCREASE NUMBER OF OCCUPANCY FOR RESTAURANT.OBTAIN NEW CERTIFICATE OF OCCUPANCY."

By the way, CB3 also approved the sidewalk cafe for this spot...this promises to be a scene, and not necessarily in a good way...

Noted

"At first glance, the term 'jazz rabbi' might seem incongruous, but the recent installation of Greg Wall, a well-known jazz musician, as the rabbi at the Sixth Street Community Synagogue, a modern Orthodox congregation in the East Village, shows that the porkpie and the yarmulke are not necessarily mutually exclusive." Your chance to live above Sunny and Annie's while making money and entertaining in the triplex

So while we've been speculating about what addresses on Third Street might be for sale... here's an interesting two-building combo that has been on the market...

According to the Halstead listing for 543 E. Sixth St. at Avenue B:

INCOME PRODUCER WITH OWNER'S TRIPLEX
Two buildings comprising 4 junior one bedroom apartments, two commercial spaces and a luxurious owner's triplex with oversized terrace and roof designed for entertaining. The 4 junior ones are all free market, three are leased and one is currently available for rent. The triplex is also leased free market
.

So...as the owner in the triplex, you'd get to live above Sunny and Annie's...? Sandwich run!

Priced at $4.8 million.

Joe's has reopened

A very good sign...Joe's was closed due to what one commenter described as an "insurance snafu." It was shuttered for at least one week...the above photo was taken Saturday...Anyone know when it reopened? I didn't go by Thursday or Friday nights.

The future of 95 Avenue A

Just confirming one thing from Monday night's CB3/SLA meeting. Our reader in attendance thought that the people behind Cien Fueguos -- coming to 95 Avenue A at Sixth Street -- also had something to do with Death & Co. and Bourgeois Pig.

Indeed, that's the case, as Eater's Gabe Ulla reported:

Cienfuegos restaurant (95 Ave. A) was the rare case of a new app within a resolution area receiving unanimous approval from the board. The restaurant’s team, which consists of Luis Gonzalez (ex-Mercer Kitchen) and Death & Co. and Bourgeois Pig operatives, knew exactly what they had to do to sway the board: they presented petitions with over 1,000 signatures, demonstrated the public benefit from having a straight-up Cuban restaurant in a city that doesn't have many of them, and stressed their nearly immaculate records.

I'm all for "a straight-up Cuban restaurant," but, given the pedigree of the owners here, is the neighborhood in for, say, $26 mojitos?

"Joe's is only closed temporarily"

As we posted yesterday, the great Joe's Bar on Sixth Street between Avenue A and Avenue B has been closed the last few days...

However! Jeremiah received the following response about Joe's on his Facebook fan page:

i can deliver GOOD news to you from a very reliable inside source -- Joe's is only closed temporarily -- some little insurance snafu but they will return in full force - don't know when -- stayed tuned. (we can't lose more places, i'm starting not to recognize my own hometown anymore). ugh.

Something finally coming to 95 Avenue A

The corner northwest corner of Avenue A and Sixth Street has been empty forever, it seems, since that place called Le Zoccole shuttered... As EV Grieve reader Creature points out, something called Cien Fueguos LLC will go before the CB3/SLA tonight for a liquor license...they're aiming for a sidewalk cafe too...

Very bad things: Joe's Bar is closed, at least temporarily

Swung by Joe's last night on Sixth Street between Avenue A and Avenue B... seemed like a good bet to escape people watching sporting events on TV...and it was closed...no note to patrons or anything either.

Apparently the bar has been closed for several days now. We don't know why for sure. However, a neighbor vaguely said something about a paperwork glitch with the state. Hmm.

And this is what the bar should have looked like last night...

Let's hope this isn't the beginning of a Joe's curse.

Something about shopping at Sunny and Annie's makes me feel so .... faint

So many sandwich choices! On Avenue B and Sixth Street yesterday afternoon...in front of Sunny and Annie's...

I walked up to her and said, "Are you a parking ticket? Because you have fine written all over you." And then, "Are you from Tennessee? Because you're the only 10 who I see!"

Then the photographer yelled at me... but seriously, the always-reliable complete stranger standing there said that he thought it was a shoot for a purse -- that thing in her hand. I think it was more about the dress.

Bob Arihood came across another photo shoot yesterday — this one in Tompkins Square Park. (Oops! Same model... just a change in outfits and location...)

Coming soon to Sixth Street: Vietnamese sandwiches

Gomi, the vegan/green boutique on Sixth Street near Avenue A, recently closed its doors...And thanks to these photos from EV Grieve reader Creature, we now know what's going in this space...

... "authentic Vietnamese sandwiches and other treats." Curious how this food will fare with the Cherry Tavern crowd next door...

East Village finally getting that crucial pita/sports bar combo

As Eater first reported, the former Bounce Deuce on Second Avenue and Sixth Street is becoming something else... now the signage is up...

And as you can see, the Queens-based Pita Pan is taking over...Their fries look good.
