"Earlier this week an ingenious and noble New Yorker rescued this baby bird on East 13th Street..."

But yesterday, the baby flew the basket...

This bird just crashed into Benny's Burritos and died

This bird just nose bombed into Benny's Burritos on Avenue A at East Sixth ... and, sadly, died. The photo is via EVG FB friend Drew Rabbitclub... We don't know too much about birds... Rather an unusual-looking one. Anyone know what kind of bird this is? (Aside from a dead bird, yes.)

Birds and rat squirrel fight over slice of pizza in Tompkins Square Park

So some birds were enjoying a slice today near Tompkins Square Park, as this photo from Bobby Williams shows...

Then! Lurking! A rat! Steals the slice...[Updated: Err, maybe it's a squirrel. Sorry. Still.]

Sort of slo-mo via the Grievestrator...

And guess what? The birds got it back...

Safety in numbers. And don't fuck with the Park's birds.

Your Sunday evening ornithology break

From EV Grieve regular peter radley ... photos of an Ovenbird in Tompkins Square Park...

Via the Cornell Lab of Ornithology ...

A small, inconspicuous bird of the forest floor, the Ovenbird is one of the most characteristic birds of the eastern forests. Its loud song, "teacher, teacher, teacher," rings through the summer forest, but the bird itself is hard to see.

Reunions! Missing bird — named Redrum — belongs to Lucky Cheng's owner

Yesterday, an East Second Street resident found this bird outside his window. (You can read that post here.) Turns out it's a Red Lorikeet.

And as of last night, we learned that it belongs to Lucky Cheng's owner Hayne Suthon, who lives nearby. As she said in an email, he somehow got spooked ... and got of her apartment and into the trees near her apartment. "He would not come down but called to me. I had no idea how I was going to get him down."

That he ended up on the other side of First Avenue comes as a bit of a surprise to her. "We never saw him fly before. He just hopped around and, even when the dog played with him, he would just coast like a plane that could not get airborne."

Suthon is relived that he is OK, and is grateful that his rescuers took such good care of him... and thankful to everyone who helped look for him.

The two will be reunited this morning. And I forgot to ask what his name is. And his name is Redrum.

Are you missing a bird?

So, a reader just spotted this bird outside his window on East Second Street apartment (between First Avenue and Second Avenue).

Per the reader: "Bird seemed quite agitated and freaked out, but with the help of a neighbor we were able to get the bird inside and are now trying to find its owner/what to do with it. It does have an identification band on its right leg, but I couldn't quite make out what it said on it."

Anyone?

On East Fifth Street: Blue Jay vs. Cat (Plus! Cute cat video alert!)

There are several signs posted along East Fifth Street between Cooper Square and Second Avenue... (You can click on the post for a better view...) ... about a nest of baby Blue Jays... they are in danger of falling, but that's OK. The instructions on the sign tell you what to do in the event you find a dazed Blue Jay on the street...

And there's more information about what's happening here via AnimalTourism.com:

"The eggs have hatched in the fire escape nest built by blue jays on Fifth Street ... but that hasn't stopped the blue jay father from obsessing over the cat who lives down the block."

I'll say!

And there's video!
