City of Saints Coffee Roasters now open on East 10th Street
[Photo via Instagram]
Open as of yesterday at 79 E. 10th St. between Fourth Avenue and Third Avenue …
We don't know too much about them (here is their Instagram account) … a non-shilling EVG reader said that their iced coffee was good. So there you go.

Reader mailbag: Where is a good place to get a cup of coffee in the East Village before 6 a.m.?
[Free ad for the EVG favorite the Stage]
OK, technically it was a Twitter mailbag… as the question came via a tweet… Anyway!
Well, many of the coffee places (whatever you might like — 9th Street Espresso, Mud, The Bean, Think, Everyman, Third Rail, B Cup, Ost, etc., etc.) tend to open at 7 a.m. and beyond.
So. Quickly. Rays's Candy Store, Gem Spa, Sunny & Annie's…
How about it? (Unacceptable answers include 7-Eleven and "Make it at home your self lazyass.") We know that people don't seem to be too opinionated about coffee and coffee shops, right? Don't be too shy!
-------------
We often get reader queries ... asking for help with, say, donating clothes or books ... or finding an East Village-based caterer... If you have a question for the masses, then try the EV Grieve email...

Can we talk about how hard it is to find a cup of coffee in the East Village before 6 am? Any recommendations for 24-hour spots?

The Wayside is now open on East 12th Street
A few readers told us that Wayside is now open at 139 E. 12th St. just west of Third Avenue...
The cafe took over for the long-closed D&M Convenience store.
We don't know too much about the Wayside (not to be confused with the Wayland). This was the info from the Wayside application filed ahead of the CB3/SLA committee meeting in August 2012:
The applicants, listed as Paul Typaldos and Andreas Typaldos, will run a small cafe that would be open from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. Sunday-Wednesday, and 7 a.m.-2 a.m. Thursday-Saturday. They describe the food as "simple organic fare: sandwiches, paninis, salads."
And according to the application, Paul Typaldos is a majority member in Greensquare Tavern over on West 21st Street.

La Betola now open on East Sixth Street
As we first pointed out back on March 19, a new espresso bar was coming soon to 514 E. Sixth St. between Avenue A and Avenue B ... (read that post here) ...
The cafe with a handful of seats opened on Saturday. Hilary on 6th, who sent the above photo, gives it high marks... Another reader noted that the proprietors, John and Jessie, will be featuring the work of local artists on the cafe walls. First up: photographer Erica Read.
Didn't hear about other things, such as type of coffee they serve, food and WiFi... will swing by for a report later... Meanwhile, if you go, then let us know what you think...

Bowery Coffee opens today
Several readers have noted that Bowery Coffee opens today at 87 E. Houston just west of the Bowery. (BoweryBoogie noted this last week.) Boogie reports that the decor can be described as "rustic Americana." While there are a few tables, it's more of a to-go place.
Anyway, if you try it, then please let us know what you think. Of the coffee.
BB has more on the owner here.

Noted
From an article by Sheila McClear in the Post today about passionate or, perhaps, snobby baristas...
It was after the third “act of violence” at Ninth Street Espresso in the East Village that owner Ken Nye held a staff meeting. The strict policies of the coffee shop — including the refusal to sell espresso to go — had so enraged one customer that he threw a tip jar across the store in protest.
Now, the to-go espresso “is not a die-hard rule — it’s just a very strong suggestion,” says Nye

The Bean is now apparently opening on every corner in the East Village
Last week, we reported that the Bean was opening at the Crazy Landlord building on Second Avenue and East Third Street...
[Via The Bean on Facebook]
... and they just opened on Broadway and East 12th Street...
Now EV Grieve regular Esquared sends this along... sign went up today on First Avenue at Ninth Street, the former home of Anjelica's Herbs ...
The upper levels will soon be home to luxury apartments.
AND. According to their Facebook page, they will remain at Third Street and First Avenue, their original location.

The Bean will be the Crazy Landlord's new tenant on Second Avenue
Work continues at 54 Second Ave. at Third Street, home of the beloved "Crazy Landlord" sign.
Despite some rumors ("garment store with sex toys"!), the storefront will be home to the new East Village location of The Bean, currently housed on First Avenue and Third Street... just a block away. Permits with the DOB confirm the new tenant.
While walking by yesterday, EV Grieve regular jdx noted a new name on the buzzer...
We don't have all the details on the move to Second Avenue. The Crazy Landlord did confirm the new tenant. We'll have more later...
Meanwhile, the Bean is finalizing their plans to open an outpost on 12th and Broadway as well.

The Bluebird Coffee Shop has been sold
The Bluebird Coffee Shop opened in November 2009 on East First Street just west of First Avenue. It became a favorite spot of several EV Grieve readers, who have passed along word that the owners have sold the shop (new job in another city). The incoming owners take over the space on Monday. Word is they're keeping it as a coffee shop/cafe, though with a new staff.
Meanwhile, @sandwichboarder notes in the photo below that the Bluebird is now closing early these days...

Listicles! New York is now a "new style coffee bar" town
In a piece titled New York Is Finally Taking Its Coffee Seriously, the Times looks at the "new style coffee bars" that have opened here the last two years. "At places like Bluebird Coffee Shop in the East Village, the espresso is so plush and bright that it tastes sweet on its own," the article notes. "At Abraço in the East Village, you can get drip coffee brewed by the cup, not drawn from an urn."
The article goes on in great detail about fresh roasted beans and all that. Then! A listicle of the 30 best coffee joints in Manhattan and Brooklyn... and several of them can be found right around here. To the EV list!
ABRAÇO "There’s barely room enough for six standing adults, never mind the dozen or more who can crowd in during prime time. And yet in this cramped space the baristas turn out some of the city’s best cappuccinos and drip coffee."
BLUEBIRD COFFEE SHOP "So pleasant, it’s disarming — tiny and flooded with sunlight, it’s easy to sit and linger over one of the pastries baked here daily. But the coffee is exceptional. Katie Duris, one of the country’s most respected baristas, sets a high standard: the espresso is bright and lush, the cortado a sublime balance of coffee and steamed milk."
EVERYMAN ESPRESSO It’s little more than a handful of tables and a coffee counter in the lobby of the Classic Stage Company, an Off Broadway theater, but its owner, Sam Penix, is much admired by espresso-heads.
NINTH STREET ESPRESSO Each Ninth Street Espresso feels different, and yet the harried shoppers at the Chelsea Market, the parents with strollers across from Tompkins Square Park and the laptop crowd at the original Ninth Street location all enjoy uniformly excellent coffee. Last spring, the owner, Ken Nye, did the next best thing to roasting his own beans by creating the Alphabet City Blend with Intelligentsia Coffee and Tea."
OST CAFE "Excellent coffee, including a fine cappuccino. Most people here seem to nurse their drinks, a tacit rent for the comfy chairs and WiFi."
(There's also an interactive map!)

Bluebird Coffee Shop now open
The Bluebird Coffee Shop opened Saturday on East First Street just west of First Avenue. (Simon Sips was in this spot until earlier this fall.) Pretty simple: coffee and espresso drinks, with a few things like coffee cake and Irish soda bread. I always give a new place a whirl. And, for what this is worth, the coffee at the Bluebird is better than at any of the other new cafes that have opened in recent months...
