More dessert for St. Mark's Place

A "coming soon" sign is up directly next door to Jane's Sweet Buns... And that looks like dessert to us...

Jane's Sweet Buns opens today at 2 on St. Mark's Place; features 'pastries inspired by cocktails'

As we first reported two weeks ago, a bakery is opening on St. Mark's Place in the former De La Vega Museum space.

In what seems fitting for a neighborhood overrun with bars, the bakery — Jane's Sweet Buns — will feature alcohol-laden desserts.

Jenny Miller at Grub Street had the details in a post yesterday. The buns, cakes and pies are courtesy of Cienfuegos mixologist Jane Danger and owner Ravi DeRossi. Per Grub Street: "Swashbuckling types might enjoy the Rum Runner (a bun glazed in aged rum, Galliano liqueur, cinnamon, and other good stuff), while manly sorts can try the savory Southern Special (Bourbon, bacon, brown sugar, nectarine, white cheddar)."

Grub Street notes they will also sell non-alcohol desserts. Grub Street also has the menu. Sorry, no bread.

The sign on the door states they'll open today at 2.

Dessert Row lives: Here comes the Big Gay Ice Cream Shop to Seventh Street

Xoom, the nearly 18-month-old smoothie shop, moved out from its Seventh Street location in March. (Jennifer at Xoom is planning to open in another East Village location.)

Meanwhile! Serious Eats (via Eater) reports that the folks behind the Big Gay Ice Cream Truck are opening a shop in the former Xoom space. And this will likely happen next month or so.

Meanwhile! (Again!) Big Gay Ice Cream is the second trucker to open an ice cream shop on Seventh Street. We expect to find Van Leeuwen open soon near Second Avenue.

A reader sent along a link to a post on The Feast from last Friday reporting that popular food truckers Van Leeuwen will be opening their third cafe in the city — this one "at Second Avenue near 7th Street."

Per The Feast:

"[T]his first Manhattan branch will focus on locally-made ice cream, Intelligentsia coffee, and house-made pastries, but will be much larger.

"Expect the space to resemble the newest shop, which the young owners designed themselves with reclaimed wood and custom wallpaper."

So, this explains what will be going in here...

As we noted last month, workers at the former City Copies on Seventh Street just east of Second Avenue would be home to "coffee and ice cream."

A victory for chocolate libraries everywhere!

Remember that debacle over the Chocolate Library, the East Village chocolate shop whose owner was forced to change its name to Chocolate 101 after the education department told him the law forbade the use of the word "library" in business names? In a victory for the owner, Byron Bennett, he's now allowed to call his place a library.

The Chocolate Library is now open on St. Mark's Place between Avenue A and First Avenue... And EV Grieve reader Michael Fivis filed a report... "Lively grand opening. Dude working was really kind. Tasting samples and music." But, um, are there books or music...? "Just chocolate. I was expecting a sly name for another new bar! But it's actually just — a library of chocolate. Tons of square IKEA shelves filled with product."

After a little speculation this week, we have confirmation what's coming to the former Andy's Chee-Pee's space on St. Mark's near Second Avenue: Timi's Gelateria Classica™ — "a gelato franchise for the 21st century, with true Italian artisanal gelato made fresh daily."




This is the first U.S. location... per the website:

Crews have been working behind the plywood here on St. Mark's Place at the former Andy's Chee-Pees...



An EV Grieve reader caught a look inside yesterday... and, from the look of things, expect more dessert.

"Inside right now are some contractors installing counters and an ice-cream freezer. Two stories — interior lofted balcony with tables/seating set up already."

Meanwhile, just a doorway or so away, they'll be dessert and coffee (and booze?) at Roastown Coffee. When will this block of St. Mark's Place crumble under the weight of desserts?

Word on the street here at St. Mark's Place and Second Avenue... the former Pizzanini space will soon be home to an ice cream shop. "A good company," my source said.

Upscale dessert spot, uh, Spot at 13 St. Mark's Place opened last fall... and they're looking to obtain a liquor license "to add dessert wines and mixed drinks to compliment" their Spot desserts... (They're looking for a license within a resolution area...a block that already has like 22 liquor licenses...) So management put up letters around St. Mark's Place to reassure residents that they won't become "another bar"... you can click on the image below for a better read.

SHOCKER: Something other than ramen and froyo coming to St. Mark's Place

And coming to this space on 18 St. Mark's Place? An ice cream shop. This per one of the tightest-lipped construction crews ever. Seriously. You thought I had asked, "Can you tell me when Air Force One will do another photo shoot over the skies of Manhattan?"

Looking at the first retailer coming to Extra Place, that "charming little East Village Street"

Back in October, The Feed blog breathlessly announced that Bespoke Chocolates would be opening its first retail outlet in November...right in Extra Place, the infamous alleyway behind the former CBGB space where you can now buy $250 vintage Cheap Trick T-shirts. Anyway! So Bespoke would be the first shop in Extra Place, which is maybe now owned by the city or nearby condos Avalon Bowery Place...So, to torture ourselves, we took a look the other day to see what was what with this space. As far as we knew, nothing had opened yet...



Yes, something is happening behind that Bespoke wrapping, officially at 6 Extra Place. Which the Bespoke Web site describes as a "charming little East Village street."



According to the Bespoke Web site, they'll be opening after the New Year. Which narrows it down to 365 days.
