7th Street returns to 1981 for filming of young Barack Obama movie ‘Barry’ [Updated]

Crews were out today along Avenue B and Seventh Street for "Barry," the story of a college-aged Barack Obama "trying to find his way in 1981 New York City."

Per the Hollywood trades, newcomer Devon Terrell has the lead. The independent drama is being directed by Vikram Gandhi, a Vice correspondent who made the documentary "Kumare."

Avenue A on high alert for Ice-T sightings

That one of shows in the "Law & Order" family is filming around here was never really all that newsworthy... given how often they'd film around here through the years.

However, I am noting the fact that "Law & Order: SVU" is filming along Avenue A and Tompkins Square Park... mostly because I had no idea that NBC was still creating new episodes. (I thought the show only existed to help the USA Network fill 14 hours of programming a day.) But "SVU" is in its 17th season. So keep an eye out for cast members Mariska Hargitay and Ice-T today.

Now! Flashback to September 2011 when "SVU" filmed a scene at Sunny & Annie's on Avenue B...

And NBC has picked up the show for season No. 18, as Ice-T learned yesterday...

Noted

Crews are out this morning along Avenue A to film scenes for the Hulu supernatural comedy "Deadbeat."

One of the guys setting up the craft services had his young son (age 10? 12?) with him. The boy had a Razor scooter, and was ready to head off on Avenue A and East 10th Street.

The father stops the boy, and says in a firm tone: "This is a nice neighborhood, but that is not a nice Park" — nodding toward Tompkins Square Park. "Do not talk to anyone. Absolutely do not give your scooter to anyone."

[Updated] Crime drama to play out on East Village streets

Film and TV shoots around have become so commonplace that they aren't even worth noting. For the most part.

Having said [written] that, however... "The Blacklist," an FBI crime drama on NBC starring James Spader, will be camped out all day on parts of East Seventh Street and Avenue A, among other places.

The last time that we recall crews for "The Blacklist" filming around here, they had a scene with FBI agents in tactical gear and black SUVs in Tompkins Square Park. Which provided for a few confusing moments for anyone not paying attention...

Apparently this scene doesn't call for Joe Strummer in the background... the crew temporarily covered the mural outside Niagara on East Seventh Street...

Updated 6 p.m.

Workers uncovered the mural after the filming... someone said that they couldn't have it in the shoot because it is copyrighted art????

Actors come out of their shells on East 7th Street

Crews seem to be everywhere today filming "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Half Shell" (aka "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II" or "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: Half Shell.")

EVG contributor Derek Berg spotted this scene outside Vazac's/Horseshoe Bar/7B on East Seventh Street and Avenue B. (The bar will be closed today and tomorrow for filming.)

TMNT2, arguably the most prestigious production to film here since "The Smurfs Movie," stars Megan Fox, Will Arnett, William Fichtner, Tyler Perry and Laura Linney.

A crew (not with the city) was out cleaning up the fake snow from Tompkins Square Park this morning... leftovers from last night's shoot in and around the Park for Untitled Christmas Eve project, a comedy starring Seth Rogen, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Anthony Mackie.

Come back again some day... maybe for Untitled Christmas Eve project 2...?!?!

More (TV) crime drama in Tompkins Square Park today

Crews were out early this morning setting up shots for NBC's "The Blacklist" ...

A day of 'Songbyrd'

A lot of people have asked us what is filming around East Seventh Street and Avenue A today/tonight… crews for the pilot of "Songbyrd," a new E! series, have been here…

Per Deadline Hollywood, the show "centers on songwriter Lauren Byrd (Bethany Joy Lenz), a character loosely inspired by hitmaker Diane Warren, and her staff." Andrew McCarthy is directing the pilot.

As noted earlier, 7A is closed today for the shoot. There were also scenes filmed in St. Brigid's… and in Tompkins Square Park…

… and a crew member put up this sign outside Tompkins Square Park. Annnnnnnnnd, noted.

Craft services for 'The Cobbler' on East 7th Street

Filming continued today near and around Tompkins Square Park for the Adam Sandler feature, "The Cobbler."

Bobby Williams spotted the crew in action late this afternoon on East Eighth Street between Avenue B and Avenue C…

Reader report: Film crew makes woman in walker use sidewalk on other side of East 10th St.

There are some annoyed residents along East 10th Street between Avenue A and Avenue B this morning… While residents mostly try to be accommodating to the endless film shoots around the neighborhood, Jose Garcia notes this small crew crossed a line this morning.

"These clowns, who could not or would not say whether they have a permit, made the woman pictured WHO IS USING A WALKER, cross the street so they wouldn’t have to interrupt their precious work. They also asked the parks people to stop raking."

"We were not as polite as we normally might have been once they harassed the woman WHO IS USING A WALKER and bullied her into crossing the street. Happy Saturday everyone!"

Updated 12:15
Apparently the crew is filming a scene for a movie called "Little Galicia."

A resident on this block was told that the crew was from "Little Galicia." This is NOT true. The locations manager wrote in to say that they had proper permits from the Mayor's Office of Film Theater and Broadcasting, "and would NEVER allow our crew to stop an elderly woman from crossing the street during filming." They were shooting at 253 E. 10th St. between Avenue A and 1st Avenue on Friday.

Wigstock lives in Tompkins Square Park (for a 1-day movie shoot)

Day 2 of the "My Dead Boyfriend" shoot in Tompkins Square Park found cast and crew recreating Wigstock... the film, based on the novel "Dogrun," stars Heather Graham and is set in the East Village in 1999.
