Boogie nights

Crews for "The Deuce," HBO's upcoming drama series starring James Franco and Maggie Gyllenhaal, continued to film in parts of the neighborhood today (they were shooting a scene at Josie's on Sixth Street earlier)... the above photo via @slicksean shows the altered exterior of the City Cinemas Village East on Second Avenue at 12th Street ... transformed into an adult theater...

Here's more on the series via Deadline:

Written by "The Wire" creator David Simon and longtime collaborator George Pelecanos and directed by Michelle MacLaren, The Deuce follows the HBO blue logostory of the legalization and subsequent rise of the porn industry in New York’s Times Square from the early 1970s through the mid-1980s, exploring the rough-and-tumble world that existed there until the rise of HIV, the violence of the cocaine epidemic, and the renewed real estate market ended the bawdy turbulence.

That '50s show on St. Mark's Place

If you walked down St. Mark's Place between Avenue A and First Avenue in the past, oh, 24 hours, then you likely noticed the 1950s TV transformation for Amazon's "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel."

First! A recap of the pilot via Deadline:

Set in the 1950s, the project centers on Miriam “Midge” Maisel (Brosnahan), who had her life mapped out for herself: go to college, find a husband, have 2.5 kids and throw the best Yom Kippur dinners in her elegant Manhattan apartment. But when her life takes an unexpected turn, Midge will have to decide quickly what else she’s good at. Going from uptown housewife to a stand-up comic in a grungy club in the Village is an appalling choice to everyone but Midge.

Tony Shalhoub and Michael Zegen (Bugsy Siegel on "Boardwalk Empire") are also in the drama's cast.

EVG Vintage Car Correspondent Derek Berg checked out the working props...

Thankfully there's a tire repair place now on the block for all these cars...

Crews were also spotted filming a scene at Josie's last night on Sixth Street between Avenue A and Avenue B.

Signs say that crews will be filming this afternoon into the early morning hours (4 a.m.) on St. Mark's Place.

News of the filming apparently annoyed some residents (or visitors!) of 94-96 St. Mark's Place. Page Six noted that people defaced the flyer about the shoot inside the building's entrance.

“Fuck off,” one person wrote, while another added to the bottom, “You better hope I have nowhere to be during this, or your fucking ‘scene’ is ruined!”

Spotting some 'Deuce' coupes on 2nd Avenue

EVG contributor Derek Berg spotted some of the vintage cars used for filming "The Deuce," HBO's upcoming drama series starring James Franco and Maggie Gyllenhaal, in parts of the neighborhood today (like on Seventh Street)...

And are some props from Seventh Street between First Avenue and Second Avenue ...

How you can be first to see the innovative beauty of a new line of Cadillacs

A film crew will be out today (until nightfall!) to shoot a TV commercial "featuring the innovative beauty of a new line of Cadillacs," per the posted signs. (Thank you Steven for the photo!)

Filming will occur on Stuyvesant Street, East Ninth Street and East 10th Street. The sign notes that their "working vehicles" will be parked on East 11th Street between Second Avenue and Third Avenue.

The new Cadillacs are probably pretty nice, but do they have a stuffed tiger inside?

Updated

EVG reader Daniel caught a little of the action on 10th Street... you can see the innovative beauty behind the totally awesome high-tech selfie Benz...

Mystery Noah Baumbach project filming this week on a street near you

If you're a Noah Baumbach fan, then you may be interested in knowing the the filmmaker ("Mistress America," "Frances Ha," "The Squid and the Whale") will be in the and around the neighborhood this week working on his next project, "Yen Din Ka Kissa," according to posted flyers ...

As for the mystery, well, there doesn't appear to be much online (such as on his IMDB profile) about YDKK, described on the flyer on East Fifth Street and Cooper Square as a film that "tells the story of an estranged New York family coming together in preparation of artist & patriarch Harold's career retrospective."

Film crews will be around tomorrow (Monday!) and Tuesday on East Fifth Street between Second Avenue and the Bowery... East Fourth Street between Second Avenue and First Avenue... East Sixth Street between Second Avenue and and First Avenue... Lafayette between Bond and Bleecker...

That '70s show on East 4th Street

The show, which Martin Scorsese and Mick Jagger are producing, filmed in the neighborhood last Friday as well ... and we'll likely see them again.

According to Entertainment Weekly, the show is "set in 1970s New York, as punk and disco are emerging onto the drug-hazed, sex-crazed music scene, and record executive Richie Finestra (Bobby Cannavale) is trying to revitalize his label." The cast includes Olivia Wilde, Birgitte Hjort Sørensen and Mick's son James Jagger.

Avenue C subbing for Downtown Brooklyn today

Earlier today, EVG reader David G. noted the arrival of a new subway stop on Avenue C and East Second Street… site of the last gas station in the East Village.

Alas, just a tease prop from the crew of the CBS police drama "Blue Bloods," which is filming around here today.

The stop is for the 2,3,4 and 5 … the station is marked Nevins Street Station. After today's shoot, the station will be closed indefinitely for track work.

I know it's only filming for 'Rock and Roll' (but I like it)

Crews will be out today in parts of the neighborhood filming the new HBO series "Rock and Roll," which Martin Scorsese and Mick Jagger are producing.

Filming will be taking place between 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. on parts of Avenue A (between East Third and East Fifth streets) and along Avenue B and East Fourth Street and wherever else the kinda blurry photo says.

Sorry for that headline, BTW!

Reminder about that simulated explosion tonight on Avenue B

As previously noted, crews are filming scenes for "A.K.A Jessica Jones" — under the working title "Violet" — tonight on Avenue B… where there will be a simulated explosion some time between 7 p.m. and 11 p.m. for the Marvel Netflix series…

And Dave on 7th points out that Vazac's/7B/Horseshoe Bar at East 7th Street looks to be the lucky recipient of the FX this evening …

Previously on EV Grieve:
Please never mind the explosion tomorrow night on Avenue B

Please never mind the explosion tomorrow night on Avenue B

The last time that we paid attention to "Violet" filming around the neighborhood, lead actress Krysten Ritter was falling into some trash outside Sophie's on East Fifth Street (for a scene in the Marvel Netflix series).

The show — "A.K.A Jessica Jones" under the working title "Violet" — will be filming around Tompkins Square Park again tomorrow evening. Which you may hear about.

Several EVG readers shared this via Notify NYC today:

Tomorrow, July 7th, there will be a simulated explosion in the vicinity of Avenue B between East 6th Street and East 7th Street in Manhattan. The stunt will occur once between 6:00 PM and 11:00 PM. NYPD and FDNY will be on site.

Where the 'Girls' are today

Cast and crew of the HBO television series "Girls" will be filming around parts of the neighborhood today, if this is of interest… the above notice is on East 13th Street between Second Avenue and Third Avenue… there are also notices posted on Second Avenue and parts of East 13th Street and East 12th Street… the show will be starting its fifth season.

Thanks to @cassidyfein for the photo!

Sophie's is closed tonight so that a bouncer can push Krysten Ritter into some trash

Sophie's, the bar at 507 E. Fifth St. just east of Avenue A, is closed tonight while a film crew preps the exterior for a scene for the Netflix Marvel series "A.K.A. Jessica Jones."

Sophie's co-owner Richard Corton confirmed this evening's closure to us… in the scene being filmed, a bouncer will apparently 86 the show's lead, a former super hero played by Krysten Ritter, who falls or is pushed into some trash. Will have to wait for the series premiere to find out why.

Reader mailbag: What's the deal with the film crew parking?

An EVG reader asked the following yesterday upon seeing this scene on East Sixth Street between Avenue B and Avenue C…

I'm curious about the legality of these crews taking over the street hours before the time posted on these no parking posters. For example, this poster says no parking after 10 p.m. on Tuesday. It's only just after noon and already the cones are blocking drivers from parking on the street and there's a parking guard out here directing people away. What gives?

There goes the neighborhood!

EVG reader thomkat notes the arrival of a horse and buggy in front of the glorious crepe (or crape!) myrtle trees at 198 E. Seventh St.

It's for today's shoot of the ABC series "Forever" here on East Seventh Street between Avenue B and Avenue C.

Earlier.

Part of East 7th Street looking like Forever ago for TV shoot

Crews will be filming scenes for the new ABC series "Forever" on East Seventh Street between Avenue B and Avenue C today.

Ahead of that, workers yesterday transformed part of the block into turn-of-the-century-looking storefronts. (Not the most recent turn of the century either, per Dave on 7th, who also took these photos.)

Sake Bar Satsko is now Ruskin Pickles for the shoot…

Here is the show's premise, cut-n-paste from Wikipedia! (Don't tell my editor!)

Dr. Henry Morgan (Ioan Gruffudd), New York City's star medical examiner, has a secret. He does not just study the dead to solve criminal cases, he does it to solve the mystery that has eluded him for 200 years — the answer to his own inexplicable immortality.

This long life has given Henry remarkable observation skills which impresses his new partner, Detective Jo Martinez (Alana De La Garza). Each week, a new case and their budding friendship will reveal layers of Henry's long and colorful past. Only his best friend and confidant, Abe (Judd Hirsch) knows Henry's secret.

Unfortunately, today is the last day for E.W. Zander & Co. Dry Goods. The landlord raised the rent from $16 a month to $8,000.

Girls! Girls! Girls!

"Girls," the HBO television program entering its fourth season, will be filming in and around the neighborhood this week.

Signs are up along the Bowery and East Third Street for Tuesday … and on St. Mark's Place (and East Ninth Street) between Second Avenue and Third Avenue for Wednesday …

There are likely more filming notices on other streets, but we didn't really look too closely for them.

The animal extras of Judd Apatow's comedy 'Trainwreck,' which filmed in the East Village today

Not much is apparently known about the movie, which filmed in part today on East Ninth Street between First Avenue and Second Avenue ... Bobby Williams spotted a few of the extras...

The human co-stars in the comedy are reported to be Daniel Radcliffe, Tilda Swinton, Marisa Tomei, Brie Larson, Bill Hader and Amy Schumer, who wrote the script, among others.
