Suds Buds is the name of the rebranded Wash 'N Clean Laundromat on 14th Street

Those Wash 'N Clean Laundromat bags are now collector's items.

The business at 540 E. 14th St. between Avenue A and Avenue B changed names to... Suds Buds, which gives off that weed-beer shop vibe.

However, it's still a laundromat with the same owners, as we understand it... it's also wackiest-name competition for the Bubbles N Go Laundromat on Second Street between Avenue A and Avenue B.

The laundromat on 5th and C will remain a laundromat

Photos by Stacie Joy

Renovations continue on the SW corner of Avenue C and Fifth Street, the longtime home of a laundromat.

The Avenue C Laundromat was expected to close whenever the owner sold the property at 69 Avenue C. There was speculation that the two-story building would be demolished for some kind of new residential development. Who buys a laundromat and keeps it a laundromat!?

Well, according to TradedNY this past July, Hildreth Real Estate Advisors bought the property from Gwangil Kim for $3.4 million.

And the business will remain a laundromat — called My Sunny Laundry.

Here's a look at the ongoing renovations from recent days ... including a new Pepsi machine...

Coming soon to this block of 5th Street: Duo Cafe and For You Laundry

Signage is up for Duo Cafe at the under-renovation west-side storefront at 223 E. Fifth St. between Second Avenue and Cooper Square. (Thanks to all the readers who sent in the tip!)

No word just yet on who is behind this venture, which will offer desserts and tea, per the signage.

Also coming soon to this block (closer to Second Avenue): For You Laundry, providing the customary washing, drying and folding as well as dry cleaning...

A month-long reprieve for the Avenue C Laundromat

Photos by Stacie Joy

The Avenue C Laundromat, set to close after service on Feb. 28, will be in business for at least another month here at 69 Avenue C at Fifth Street.

The closing notice has been updated to March 31...
As previously reported, the landlord (listed as D&K Plaza, Inc. in Rego Park) is selling (or has sold) the two-level building. There isn't any listing of a sale in public records just yet.

[Updated] Avenue C Laundromat now closing on March 31

Photos by Stacie Joy

Updated: The closing date was extended to March 31

-----

Avenue C Laundromat closes after service tomorrow.

The official reason: the landlord (listed as D&K Plaza, Inc. in Rego Park) is selling (or has sold) the two-level building here at 69 Avenue C at Fifth Street. There isn't any listing of a sale in public records just yet.
The announcement earlier this month apparently caught staff by surprise... employees such as Ines Calle (below), who has worked here for 20 years, are left looking for new work...
Said one EVG reader about this closure: "It's a real bummer for anyone who lives in the immediate neighborhood and I feel bad that the women who have worked there for so many years are now looking for new jobs. I guess these new luxury buildings that keep going up in this neighborhood all come with a built-in washer/dryer? Ugh."

The great First Avenue Laundry Center is closing for renovations this fall

Photos and reporting by Stacie Joy

In the days/weeks ahead, the First Avenue Laundry Center will be closing for renovations at 33 First Ave. at Second Street.
Fear not! The laundromat will reopen.

EVG correspondent Stacie Joy recently talked with Anne DeVita, the 88-year-old manager (above left with her assistant Nellie).

"The dryers haven't been working well since there was a fire a few months ago due to lint accumulation. The fire department had to come," said DeVita, who has worked here for 40 years. "The plan is to close down for renovations. I think it will happen after Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, if I had to guess."

The rest of the conversation went like this:

How long will the laundromat be closed?

"I don't know; your guess is as good as mine. Maybe a few months? When you see a sign out front saying 'CLOSED FOR RENOVATIONS' that will be it. In 40 years there have been no renovations. The owners are going to take out the nonfunctioning dryers and put in new ones."

All new washers too?

"I don't know. Maybe they will paint too, or do some flooring work. I will be getting paid to be here every day to let the contractors and workers in. I'm not doing it for free."

Anyway, in our estimation, the frozen-in-time laundromat is PERFECT the way it is...
And H/T to EVG reader Steph!

Thoughts on a new tenant for a former laundromat

A for-rent banner hangs across the front of the former New Phoenix Laundromat, which closed in the spring at 199 First Ave. between 12th Street and 13th Street.

A sign on the door makes an appeal for the next tenant (thanks to Steven for the top two pics) ...
Someone! Please open this laundromat!! We need one!!!

Meanwhile, while this won't be of help to the residents who live around the former New Phoenix... a new laundromat (Laundry Mart!) opened in early July at 60 Avenue B between Fourth Street and Fifth Street (just realized that we never noted this arrival)...

Dry cleaners and laundromats make a return

The dry-cleaning business was hard hit during the pandemic.

In early 2021, the National Cleaners Association reported that one in six dry cleaners had closed or gone bankrupt in the United States. In the East Village, 10 dry cleaners went out of business.

Perhaps the worst is behind for the owners who offer these services. E3 Cleaners recently debuted at 82 E. Third St. between First Avenue and Second Avenue. E3 offers dry cleaning, tailoring and drop-off laundry service.

Meanwhile, a combo dry cleaner-laundromat has opened at 31 Avenue A between Second Street and Third Street (thanks to Stacie Joy for this photo from Friday). This had been in the works for this NYCHA-space for some time — we first spotted this in August 2020.

A laundromat is also coming soon to 60 Avenue B between Fourth Street and Fifth Street.

Reader report: new laundromat washed up before it opens?

We've been meaning to note that a laundromat is opening at 60 Avenue B between Fourth Street and Fifth Street... previously site of a laundromat.

An EVG reader (who shared both of these pics) points out a 14-day rent demand on the gate...
Per the document, the total rent due is $9,510.44 (the monthly rent is $4k). Hopefully, the owners can get this sorted out to open.

Here's your new dry clean-laundromat signage on Avenue A

While the laundry-dry cleaning business has been hard hit in 2020... we do have a new one opening soon at 31 Avenue A between Second Street and Third Street ... the signage arrived yesterday for Organic Dry Clean & Laundromat. (Not sure if that's the name or description of the business!)

The space, owned by the NYCHA, had been vacant since Venus Body Arts moved out toward the end of 2017.

Storefront surprise! A new laundromat coming soon to 31 Avenue A

Well then. The paper covering the front windows over at 31 Avenue A between Second Street and Third Street came down the other day... revealing the useful new tenant coming soon — laundromat!

The space, owned by the NYCHA, had been vacant since Venus Body Arts moved out toward the end of 2017.

[La La] Laundromat update

La La Laundry reopened earlier this week on Avenue B at 11th Street after a two-week break.

EVG regular Lola Saénz shared these photos... as you can see, La La is open from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., with that last call for washing at 5:30 p.m. (and closed Sundays) ...

And gloves and masks are required inside...

No dry cleaning at the moment... and apparently they will deliver within a five-block radius.

You can find our list of open laundromats and dry cleaners from April 1 right here.

Readers have also noted other places that have either reduced their announced hours of business or close on random days.

Off to La La land for this Avenue B laundromat

[Top photos by Steven]

In laundromat news, Spin City is now the lyrical-sounding La La Laundry on Avenue B at 11th Street...

Not sure at the moment if the place is under new ownership... or if they just decided on a name change.

Meanwhile, La La Laundry might have just overtaken Bubbles N Go on Second Street as the neighborhood's wackiest-named laundromat...

Reader report: Avenue B Cleaners Cromanated

Several readers shared the news that the Avenue B Cleaners between Fourth Street and Fifth Street abruptly closed last week... one reader believes it shut down on Thursday evening — with a for rent sign via Steve Croman's 9300 Realty showing up on Friday.

There's still clothing inside the dry cleaner and drop-off laundry ... a sign on the door instructs customers to call Kapri Cleaners on East Houston...

On 14th Street, Evergreen Cleaners closing, merging with Wash N Clean

The owners of Evergreen Cleaners on 14th Street have announced that they are closing at the end of the month...

Signage on the shop window here between Avenue A and First Avenue notes that their lease wasn't renewed ... and that they are merging with Wash N Clean at 540 E. 14th St. near Avenue B (next to Otto's!).
