Now under wraps: The Tompkins Square Park pop-up piano

[Bobby Williams]

As noted Wednesday, the Sing for Hope Pianos return to NYC streets and public spaces tomorrow ... and we'll have one in Tompkins Square Park... and said piano arrived yesterday, and a resident immediately complained about how many parking spots this was taking up.

Students from P.S. 34 designed the TSP piano:

Our design was inspired by the composition notebooks we use in school. The front and back of the piano show the notebook cover, the sides are notebook paper and the legs of the piano are pencils. You will also notice that on the side panels of the piano, we have written "hope" in various languages.

The piano is expected to be in the Park through June 16, when it will apply for a beer-wine license followed by a sidewalk cafe then full liquor.

Ivories, tickled: Pop-up piano returns to Tompkins Square Park on Saturday

[Song for Hope]

Starting Saturday, the Sing for Hope Pianos return to NYC streets.

Per the website!

In one of New York City’s most vibrant public art installations, 88 artist-designed pianos (one for each key on a piano) are placed in parks and public spaces throughout the 5 boroughs for anyone and everyone to enjoy.

And Tompkins Square Park will have a piano (pictured above) created by P.S. 34.

Our design was inspired by the composition notebooks we use in school. The front and back of the piano show the notebook cover, the sides are notebook paper and the legs of the piano are pencils. You will also notice that on the side panels of the piano, we have written "hope" in various languages.

The piano will be in the Park through June 16.

As you will recall, the pop-up piano that visited Tompkins Square Park in 2011 was the worse thing to happen here since Daniel D. Tompkins decided to ... Oh, joking!

Here are some photos from Bobby Williams from July 2011...

The night that the music died on East 14th Street

EV Grieve reader joe spotted this old beaut outside the Crocodile Lounge on East 14th Street last evening...

He couldn't find a date of manufacture, but the 10-year warranty must have expired.

Lullaby for the pop-up piano in Tompkins Square Park

Yesterday, the Sing for Hope pop-up piano ended its 18-day (or so!) residency in Tompkins Square Park. Workers came by to take the piano to its permanent new home at a school, library, community center, etc.

Or else it was stolen. In any event! It was fun while it lasted, probably. (C'mon — kidding!)

Meanwhile, we'll miss the photo opps. All photos here by Bobby Williams.

Please don't let the pop-up piano in Tompkins Square Park see this

Because we don't want the piano in the Park now to think that this is what happens when pop-up season ends on July 2... tossed to the curb... thanks to EV Grieve reader Hilary for the photo on Sixth Street near Avenue A today...

An afternoon at the opera, kind of

And a few photos from earlier today by the Tompkins Square Park pop-up piano... where members of the Amore Opera performed as part of Make Music New York day... (Photos by Bobby Williams)

And Bob Arihood has a rather funny photo involving a can of Four Loko during this... right here.

Today at the Tompkins Square Park pop-up piano

EV Grieve Senior Pop-Up Piano Correspondent Bobby Williams was on the scene...

And, he reported, this couple danced to "New York, New York" ...

Today, the nonprofit organization Sing for Hope officially unveils the piano in Tompkins Square Park, one of 88 that you can find around the city...

This morning, Allen Semanco photographed Jordan Bailey tuning up the piano...

Meanwhile, Bobby Williams noted it last night as it sits near the ping-pong table.

So! What will be the first song that someone plays? This is my guess. Sounds pretty good on a piano...

Uh, anyway. A few other facts. The artist Nicolina did the art for this piano, dubbed "Piano of Magical Merriment."

And go here for the official list of activities at this piano.

Pop-up piano returns to Tompkins Square Park

As you may remember, the nonprofit organization Sing for Hope placed 60 donated pianos around the city for your use last year.

And now they're back with 88 pianos, each of which has been painted by an artist type or someone. Bobby Williams happened by yesterday when this guy was putting the (locking the?) Tompkins Square Park piano in place...

As the sign says, this one will be unveiled tomorrow.

But! Our own Melanie Neichin at East Village Corner got a sneak preview... And we hear that she even played "Für Elise"...

In any event, hope this won't be too distracting for the nearby ping pongers (table tennisers?).

The piano will be here until July 2.
