[Updated] Gino Sorbillo opens his pizzeria tomorrow on the Bowery



Tomorrow marks the official grand opening of Sorbillo, the first U.S. pizzeria from "the Neapolitan celebrity super-chef" Gino Sorbillo at 334 Bowery between Bond and Great Jones...







Here's more on Sorbillo from a profile at Eater in September:

Though he's unknown to most Americans, Gino Sorbillo is one of the most famous pizzaioli in Italy, with regular guest appearances on MasterChef Italia, three restaurants in Naples, and a reputation for having fought the mafia — beating back crime in Centro Storico, the neighborhood that’s home to his flagship pizzeria.

The pizzeria will be open from noon to 11 p.m. daily (until midnight on Friday and Saturday). You can find their menus here.

Will Sorbillo be able to break the streak of quick openings and closings at this address on the Bowery? Most recently, the hyped PYT — "Home of America's Craaaziest Burgers" — imploded here after just three months in business in early 2016.

The space was home to Forcella Bowery for nearly three years until November 2014 … only to be replaced in December 2014 by the tapas-friendly Espoleta, which closed six months later to make way for Gia Trattoria. They quickly closed.

Martina opens this weekend (and the sidewalk planters have arrived)

Martina, the Roman-inspired pizzeria from Danny Meyer's Union Square Hospitality Group, opens Saturday on 11th Street at Third Avenue.

Grub Street had the news, speaking with Nick Anderer, the former chef at its sister pizzeria-restaurant, Marta.

Unlike the wood-fired pies at the mothership, Martina’s are smaller, cheaper ($7 to $12), cooked in a gas oven in about two minutes, and doled out counter-service style. But they share Marta’s ultra-thin-crust DNA: Martina’s four-slice pies use the same dough, the same California tomatoes, the same Di Palo’s mozzarella. One of those vibrating pager thingamajigs Danny Meyer popularized at Shake Shack will buzz you when your pizza’s ready ...

Also, there won't be any delivery...

But when it comes to one particular in-demand amenity, Anderer won’t budge: delivery. “I want my food to be enjoyed at the best possible moment,” he says, though he will allow takeout.

More about Martina, Danny Meyer's 'fine-casual pizzeria' coming to 11th Street

Martina, the Roman-inspired pizzeria from Danny Meyer's Union Square Hospitality Group, is opening next month on 11th Street at Third Avenue ... in the former lobby of Eleventh and Third, the 12-floor residential building here.

Esquire profiles the executive chef, Nick Anderer, and provides a few more details on Martina — "a fine-casual pizzeria with a paired-down, cheaper menu, as well as service at a counter instead of table side."

To an excerpt:

With Martina, Anderer will experiment with hospitality — he wants to figure out how to toe the line between serving customers food quickly, but not making them feel like he made their meal before they walked in the door. That means snacks and drinks ready right after you order and take your buzzer.
Meatballs, Martina Mista salad, seasonal vegetable dishes (starting with zucchini), potato croquettes, etcetera.

For booze, Anderer wants to offer the same quality of craft wines and champagne as his recent spots. "So if somebody does want to go high-brow, low-brow and have a seven-dollar pizza with some awesome champagne they can do it without breaking the bank," he says. Not to mention that gelato machine, serving a basic vanilla flavor that he'll use to make desserts like affogato.

Pizzeria in the works for former pizzeria at 130 St. Mark's Place



In recent weeks we heard that a pizzeria was taking over the vacant space at 130 St. Mark's Place between Avenue A and First Avenue. That transition made sense, given that the two previous tenants were pizzerias (Via Della Pace Pizza and Falanghina Pizza Bar).

EVG correspondent Steven shares this photo... the sign on the door notes that La Pizza Di Tramonti is the new tenant...



Don't know anything about them just yet... and they haven't appeared on any recent CB3-SLA dockets for a beer-wine license.

Danny Meyer's incoming pizzeria looking for CB3 approval for a 4-table sidewalk cafe



One more quick note about tonight's CB3-SLA committee meeting... as previously noted, Danny Meyer's Union Square Hospitality Group is opening Martina, a pizzeria, at 198 E. 11th St./aka 55 Third Ave.



They are on this month's docket to get approval for a four-table (eight seat!) sidewalk cafe ... here's a rendering (PDF) via the CB3 website... showing off that Mmartina lettering...



The street-level pizzeria proposes to operate the outdoor seating Sunday-Wednesday 11 a.m. to 11 p.m., Thursday 11 a.m. to midnight, and Friday-Saturday 11 a.m. to 1 a.m.

CB3 OK'd the beer-wine license back in November. Apparently this didn't include the sidewalk cafe. Not sure!

The CB3-SLA meeting is tonight at 6:30 in the Thelma Burdick Community Room, 10 Stanton St. (corner of the Bowery).

Joe and Pat’s mark their arrival on 1st Avenue



As you may know, Joe & Pat's, the 57-year-old pizzeria on Staten Island, is opening an outpost in the East Village.

The Joe and Pat's signage has just arrived at the former Lanza's space on First Avenue between 10th Street and 11th Street... as these photos via Steven show...





Casey Pappalardo, one of the pizzeria's owners, told the Staten Island Advance in January that they'd be open within six months, but he didn't sound so convincing. "That's if all goes well — there's always some setbacks."

But the sign is a good sign anyway.

Grub Street recently named Joe and Pat's Staten Island's best pizza:

Joe & Pat’s is the king of Staten Island pizza. Its pies are the ultimate version of one of the borough’s dominant styles: thin-crust, vodka-sauced bar pie. Open since 1960, it doesn’t look like much, but the pizza is magnificent. The dough is pounded so it doesn’t get airy, resulting in a crust that’s disappearingly thin and extra crunchy. The vodka sauce is sweet and smooth; pepperoni, curled up in crisp cups, makes the perfect foil.

Lanza's closed for good back in July 2016 after the state seized the restaurant. But! Lanza's has come back to life as a to-go spot on 23rd Street.

Report: Staten Island pizzeria Joe & Pat’s taking over the Lanza's space on 1st Avenue

Joe & Pat's, the family owned pizzeria that has been serving up slices on Staten Island since 1960, is opening a second outpost — at the former Lanza's space on First Avenue.

Owner Casey Pappalardo told Eater, who first reported this news, that he and several uncles will be running the outpost and expect to open the 50-seat restaurant with a bar in the next six months.

The state seized Lanza's last July for nonpayment of taxes here between 10th Street and 11th Street.

The old-world Italian restaurant, which first opened in 1904, sat languishing until an auction of its contents on Jan. 5.

Mandolino Pizza coming soon to 13th Street



Signage is up for Mandolino Pizza here on East 13th Street between Third Avenue and Fourth Avenue...



We don't know a thing about the pizzeria just yet, like will it be more of a slice-to-go place ... or a sit-down-and-order-a-whole-pie establishment... (or both!)

Mandolino takes over the space from Sahara Citi, the hookah/hummus restaurant that closed this past summer after four years in business.

In any event, despite the nearby NYU dorm presence, it has to be a tough pizzeria market right in this area ... you have Joe's around the corner on 14th Street, which serves one of the city's best slices ... Gotham Pizza recently opened on 12th Street and Third Avenue (I finally tried a slice there and really liked it)... and for a sit-down meal, there's Bruno Pizza on 13th Street between Third Avenue and Second Avenue that reviewers really seem to like.

Gotham Pizza now open on 3rd Avenue

The pizzeria opened this past Friday on Third Avenue and 12th Street... here's a look at their menu... a regular slice starts at $2.75... with pepperoni $3.50...



Will definitely stop back for a slice... and a taste-test post (#pizzagram)

Gotham Pizza interior reveal on 3rd Avenue



The other day workers removed the paper from the windows at the incoming Gotham Pizza on Third Avenue and 12th Street ... as these photos by EVG reader Laura K. show...not much to see inside just yet — mostly boxes...



...Workers papered up part of the windows again by the end of the day Saturday...



Anyway, people have told us that they like the pizza here. (There are several other locations in the city.) Serious Eats gave Gotham Pizza high marks, particularly for its super-thin crust that includes "a smattering of breadcrumbs," in this 2009 review.

No one word on an opening date just yet for the Third Avenue spot.

As you probably know, the space last served up the FroYo via Funkiberry.

Funkiberry-replacing pizzeria revealed on 3rd Avenue



Well! EVG reader Daniel sent along this photo from yesterday afternoon, when workers put up the signage for the new pizzeria coming to Third Avenue and East 12th Street.

As we noted a few weeks ago, workers said that the former Funkiberry would become a pizza place.

Anyway, as you can see, it's a Gotham Pizza. We're familiar with the name (there are several in the city), though we've never tried the pizza. Perhaps you have?

Before serving up FroYo here for nine months, the address was home to several pizzerias through the years... including more recently AAA (New) Amici Pizza ... and via a ghost signage reveal, Lawrence & Paul's Pizza & Restaurant...

But there won't be any Funkiberry ghost signage some day. It's in FroYo Signage Heaven.

Hey, the Funkiberry space will become a pizzeria (again)



Workers have been busy inside the former Funkiberry froyo space on Third Avenue and East 12th Street. This past week, an EVG reader saw workers bringing in "regular, not wood burning, ovens." A worker also told EVG correspondent Steven that the space was to become a pizzeria. Not sure at the moment who the tenant will be.

Probably would have made sense to leave the pizza ovens intact after AAA (New) Amici Pizza got RentHikeitis and closed in July 2013. The corner space had been home to at least two pizzerias before this.

F-berry closed in March 2015 after nine months in business.

Baker's Pizza in soft-open mode on Avenue A



The pizzeria at 201 Avenue A between East 12th Street and East 13th Street is now serving... as you can see, the hours for now are noon to 10 p.m., Monday-Saturday...



One EVG reader chimed in with an early review in the comments: "I had a slice at Baker's Pizza: a white slice with caramelized onions and a little sausage — very unique. It was delicious. Bravo to the baker!"

At the beginning of the year, East Village resident Jordan Baker bought the business from the folks who ran Nonna's Pizza here.

Vegan pizzeria 00 + Co. is now open on 2nd Avenue



00 + Co., the vegan pizzeria and wine bar, made its debut last night at 65 Second Ave. between East Third Street and East Fourth Street... in the former Winebar space. (Raymond Azzi, who owned Winebar, is a partner in 00 + Co. with chef Matthew Kenney.)

(Stuffed) Pizza Rats sighting on 1st Avenue



Here's a New York City Nature Scene from this afternoon on First Avenue between St. Mark's Place and East Seventh Street...



EVG correspondent Steven, who took these photos, didn't see anyone around to take credit for this installation...



However, the Pizza Rats are the work of Tina Trachtenburg, a.k.a. "Mother Pigeon," who creates soft sculpture pigeons and other urban vermin that she sells in city parks. She recently unveiled her Pizza Rat plushie in honor of the real-life Pizza Rat.

Noted

By now, perhaps, you've seen the viral video of the rat dragging a slice of pizza down the stairs to the L train platform at First Avenue and East 14th Street last night.

Nonna's Pizza arrives on Avenue A



An EVG reader reports that Nonna's Pizza has opened at 201 Avenue A between East 12th Street and 13th Street.

According to the reader, the pizzeria is run by a grandson and his grandmother … the family patriarch operated pizzerias in Long Island and Westchester dating to the 1980s…



Before we heard from the reader, we thought it might be a new outpost for Nonna's L.E.S. Pizzeria on Clinton Street. However, the folks at Nonna's said that they're not expanding.

And how's the pizza? Unfortunately, the shop wasn't open yet for the day when the reader happened by. Anyone else try it?

The previous tenant, Fat Sal's, which closed in May, took over in May 2011 from APizzA.

Fat Sal's has closed on Avenue A; new owners to open another pizzeria



That's it for Fat Sal's, the pizzeria at 201 Avenue A between East 12th Street and 13th Street. Paper is up in the windows.

The owner sold the shop, and the new proprietor will keep the space as a pizzeria.

Meanwhile, neighbors upstairs are curious what, if anything, might happen with the ventilation duct that workers installed before Sal's opened…



As we understand it, the previous owner tried to little avail to reduce the fan noise that residents say would rattle their windows.

Fat Sal's opened in May 2011, taking over the space from APizzA.

Johnny Favorite's now serving slices (and sorbet) on East 4th Street



Johnny Favorite's made its debut last Thursday at 240 E. Fourth St., just west of Avenue B.

The pizzeria is connected to Lovecraft, the bar-restaurant that opened last August at 50 Avenue B.

A regular slice starts at $2, with the Ultimate slice (homemade tomato sauce, pepperoni, smoked bacon, sweet Italian sausage and mozzarella) going for $4 ...



Other item include calzones, specialty rolls and garlic knots…





Local school kids receive a free scoop of ice cream or sorbet with the purchase of a slice.

The $1.50 2 Bros. on St. Mark's Place has apparently closed



In other St. Mark's Place closure news on this block … we hear that the 2 Bros. Pizza (with the upscale $1.50 SUPREME slice!) has closed at 36 St. Mark's Place near Second Avenue…

The "pizzeria" has been dark of late during stated business hours. Meanwhile, an EVG tipster reports seeing one of the employees from this shop working at the $1 2 Bros. at 32 St. Mark's Place. The worker said that the $1.50 space was "no more."

If this location at No. 36 is officially closed, then it will mark the second of the three East Village 2 Bros. to close. The location on First Avenue near East 14th Street abruptly shut down last summer.
