On my commute this morning I watched this truck crush a bicycle going north on Allen at Houston. The young woman riding it jumped clear & looked ok. The truck didn't stop. I chased it down & got the plate. I think the truck said EAN Holdings. Surely someone on here knows the lady who was riding that bike.
I live on Second Avenue between 11th and 12th streets. Verizon has been testing their emergency generator on the roof of 204 Second Ave., between 12th and 13th streets for the past year or so. The noise from the generator is incredibly loud, like the sound of a jet engine at close range.
The DEP told me that by code, the emergency generator must be tested at least once a month. The tests last an hour or more each time. There is no predictability when the testing will take place. Verizon has turned the generator on very early Sunday mornings, and sometimes in the middle of the day. On Monday, the generator came on twice, once at 5:30 in the morning, which woke us and other neighbors up, and then again around noon. Wednesday night at 7 just as we sat down for dinner, the generator went on again for about an hour.
I have taken to calling the DEP each time the generator goes on and they have offered to come to my apartment to monitor the noise level. The DEP needs to take a reading when the generator is on and when it is off to get the ambient sound level in the apartment. If there is more than a 10db difference between the two then we have a case and Verizon could be ordered to do some sound attenuation to bring the generator noise below the threshold set by code.
The DEP has been very helpful, however so far we have been unsuccessful in getting them here with a meter while the generator is running. I have taken readings on an iPhone app and have found the sound of the generator to be over 10db from the ambient noise level in our apartment.
I am wondering if anyone else in the neighborhood has taken any action. Thanks for your help!
The noise is coming from the metal chimney shown here on the south side of the Verizon Building roof.

A terrible smell has been lingering since the blizzard like a dead dog — or, not to be overly dramatic, a dead person.
This morning the area was surrounded by yellow tape. A police cruiser was blocking the street to traffic, and a Con Ed van was parked at the scene.
East 7th Street between Avenue C and D has been graced with multiple weeks of gas main replacement, causing the area's typical wildlife, frisky rats, to find alternate habitat. You'll notice in this photo, the planter's dirt has been covered in Belgian block and chicken wire to prevent the erstwhile rodents from nesting in them.
Well, the absence of our rats has brought another form of wildlife to 7th Street. Peeking from between the planters is a frightened little opossum.
311 has uninterestingly responded that opossums are the "property owner's problem."
We hope the little guy hasn't been poisoned by the block's copious rat bait stations...
Something strange is going on in the backyard of 43 St Mark's Place. The concrete patio has been been removed, and dozens of orange five-gallon buckets full of dirt are stacked in its place.
Does anyone know what's going on here? Is it a police investigation of a decades-old crime scene? Have archaeologists found the location of Peter Stuyvesant's outhouse? Or maybe the owners just decided that they have more dirt back there than they need, and they're getting rid of some. There's probably no room for a wheelbarrow to maneuver through the building, so buckets are the only way out.
Went in the other day and met the owner Alex, a really nice guy and the food is really great. It's great in the homemade grandma's home cooking kind of way. I was glad to see a nice family owned business opening up and the prices are very reasonable ($8-12) will get you a nice meal.
Today around noon, this guy came into the Tompkins Square Park dog run without a dog. Rather oddly dressed for the neighborhood. He went around talking loudly to dogs and owners alike with a dubious sounding speech impediment. “HEY, WHAT KINDA DOG IS THAT?!?!?” “HEY BUDDY, WHERE’S YOUR BALL!?!?!? WHERE’S YOUR BA-A-A-ALL!?!?!?” blah blah blah.
Harmless enough for sure, until we noticed 2 men with video cameras hidden behind bushes and trees on opposite sides of the run, both shooting him and the people he was interacting with. A few regulars informed him that he wasn’t allowed in the run without a dog and when the cameras were pointed out, they quietly stopped filming and turned away.
I asked one of them why they were filming and he replied "just for some YouTube stuff."
Creepy and annoying.
Like many in today's real-estate market, everyone's willing to look even further east.
Today, a familiar face was checking out homes on 7th between C and D and received a mixed reception. Some longtime neighborhood residents exhibited marked hostility; others had fingers crossed that this newcomer would choose to stay.
The well-wishers fantasized a new laser focus on reduction of the blocks rodent population.
But the haters, per eyewitness accounts, made their hostility known.
Multiple members of a local blue-jay clique jeered sharp jaay-jaays and repeatedly dive bombed youngblood hawk.
The clannish residents entered attack mode, pecking at his noggin as he sat placidly upon a branch pondering the new location.
Fans tried but failed to capture documentation of the skirmish (see photo below). Nest shopping stopped when a kit of pigeons circled 6th Street, ending the outing to the east.
Saw a black squirrel in Tompkins Square Park playground acting very aggressively and making a horrible growling sound. Never heard a squirrel making any noise before.
It was perched on a branch of a tree in the playground by Avenue A and 9th Street. It would sit perched on a branch wheezing/growling and breathing rapidly, then run off rapidly and return to same branch and repeat same growl.
This tree is on the inside-the-park side fence in middle of playground near the revolving pole with a triangular base.
Tried to report this to Parks Department and to 311 but just got the runaround.
I don't want any kids to be bitten by a rabid squirrel — especially my kid.
I learned tonight that the building I live in on East 9th Street has been burglarized several times in the past two weeks. The first time an apartment on the ground floor was robbed, the second time it was an apartment on a higher-up floor. There was also an incident where a guy was caught trying to jimmy a door open. The police are investigating at least one of these burglaries because financial data was taken. The burglar popped into the apartment while the tenant was home and took what he saw in plain sight. Pretty brazen!
In recent weeks workers from Starion Energy were in the building trying to convert us from Con Ed. One of them made a specific comment to me that indicated he had been studying my apartment. I'm not saying it was them, but these are crimes of opportunity and they should NOT have been let in the building. His comment creeped me out.
Please, DO NOT buzz people into your building if you are not expecting anybody and DO NOT leave the front doors to the building propped open. This should be common sense but people still do it. It may look safe but this is still a city.
We were just walking down 10th Street between A and B when this box truck, making a furniture deliver to the illegal hotel on the block, made a sudden, illegal U-turn, coming right up onto the sidewalk scaring the daylights out of us and ramming into the side of a youngish tree, scraping a bunch of bark off of it.
I started to give them the what for ... and [the delivery people] were dismissive, laughing, rude etc. I called 311, who said because it was an issue of reckless driving, transferred me to 911.
By the time the cops got there, of course, the jerks had left. The cops said because they didn’t see it they couldn’t do anything about it. With the spike of pedestrian deaths owing to out-of-control drivers in NYC, I will file a complaint with the Department of Transportation.
At around 11:20 pm, July 19, a group of drunk friends (who obviously were all still in college) were playing truth or dare outside 97 East 7th. They were obnoxious and loud.
Bro #1 dared bro #2 to climb the fire escape.
Bro #2 foolishly did, but he immediately fell from hanging onto the 2nd floor fire escape to the basement staircase.
There was a loud thud.
The girl friends of the bros started to panic and a commotion ensued. Bro #2 was unconscious. Calls to 911 were made.
The ambulance came to the scene 10 minutes later and bro #2 seemed seriously injured. I witnessed the whole thing … from the moment the group of friends started hanging outside the bldg till bro #2 got injured and was brought to ambulance. Everything happened so quick.
I don't know how to feel about this whole situation. I am livid about how these kids think that it's okay to just party like that on the sidewalk. They were bothering several neighbors as they were loudly hanging out on the sidewalk and they bothered even more neighbors the moment bro #2 fell to the basement up until the ambulance came.
I also feel quite sorry for bro #2, but he clearly brought this upon himself and it's sad how NO ONE among his friends tried to stop him from climbing the fire escape..
Oh, by the way, seconds after the ambulance left, his "friends" who were left at the scene started to laugh and giggle about what just happened.
This is what happened: I was awake already for a short time, when at 4.12 am on the 26th, I heard two people coming along our block (E 9th bet 1st & A), talking quite loudly and clearly aggravated. They didn't seem drunk, just totally angry at each other. About a minute later, they must have left the block, I heard gun shots, twelve in a row, each regularly interrupted by a pause of about one half to one second. The shouting continued after that, then three more shots were fired, I heard one of the guys shouting/howling like being hit, and then a last single shot. After that everything was quiet. No police sirens, no nothing. Very very weird. I assure you I wasn't dreaming or drunk.
By the echo of the shots I assume that it happened either on 1st Ave or probably even on E 9th bet 1st & 2nd Aves. The sound would have been quite different if the shots were fired around Tompkins Square.
I was walking home last night around 7 and a cop came barreling down the wrong way on 2nd St. toward A. By the time I got to the corner, there were about 8 cops and they were looking at what appeared to be a small bullet hole in the window of the 2A bar. It was on the side facing 2nd St and toward the middle on the bottom. It might have been a bb gun — hole wasn't that big. Did you hear anything on this?
