SSS! SSS!

Summer Streets Saturday (SSS!) is underway now... through 1 p.m. So grab a discarded Citi Bike and hit Fourth Avenue! (And don't accept any Hennessey from strangers along this route!)

Takin' it to the streets like the Doobie Brothers

Summer Streets started today...like here on Fourth Avenue at East 12th Street... Per the SS website:

With nearly 7 miles of open streets, 5 rest stops and a seven-block-long art installation in the Park Avenue Tunnel – open to pedestrians for the first time in history – there is plenty to explore at Summer Streets. And remember, everything at Summer Streets is free!

And sorry about that headline. Hey, it's free!

Happening now: people running and biking in the streets; the DOT taking your photo

Just a reminder that Summer Streets are happening today... on Fourth Avenue/Lafayette... and more around the City ...

... and depending on where you are, you may even have your photo taken by a DOT rep hovering over the street... like here on Fourth Avenue and East Ninth Street...

Perhaps for promo purposes. Or to hand out tickets later for people who didn't stop at the light...

Behold the Cyclo-Phone in Astor Place

[Curbed]

Here's something that you can take for a spin during the next two Summer Streets on Saturday and the Saturday after that (aka Aug. 18).

Curbed has the details on the above:

The Cyclo-Phone is a bicycle-powered musical instrument, in which the kiddie pools with protruding PVC pipes are hooked up to a bicycle's drive mechanism, and powered by hopping on the stationary bicycle and pedaling away.

And it's there for you to play with between 7 a.m. and 1 p.m. There's also a $1,200 penalty if the Cyclo-Phone is stolen while you're on it.

Summer loving had me a blast, Summer loving happened so fast

Tell me more, tell me more
Like does he have a car?

Oh, forgot... Summer Streets... Fourth Avenue/Lafayette... and more...

Per the Department of T website:

Join us for the fifth annual Summer Streets! On August 4, 11 and 18 from 7 am to 1 pm, nearly seven miles of New York City's streets will be opened up for everyone to play, run, walk and bike. From the Brooklyn Bridge to Central Park, along Park Avenue and connecting streets you can rock climb at Spring Street, receive a free bike helmet at 51st Street, soar through the air on a zip line at Foley Square or just stroll along and experience the city's streets in a new way—all for free.

The sign say it goes until 2; the website 1... we'll call it even at 1:30...

Meanwhile, traffic on Third Avenue will be a little dicey until 1 p.m.

Summer Streets start up today... today, next Saturday and Aug. 20 from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. So Fourth Avenue is closed to vehicles...

...and the fuzz NYPD have the side streets blocked off along Third Avenue ...
