What was this the summer of?

Well, we're not really into labeling things (too much!) ... as you may recall, somebody dubbed last summer The Summer of Bedbugs hereabouts.

So, what will this summer be remembered for?

The Summer of the Doorshitter?

The Summer of the Discarded Mattress Epidemic?

The Summer of the Walk Man?

Or, of course, The Summer of Giant Chipmunks?

The Summer of Irene?

Oh, or Rats. The Summer of Rats.

We likely know where this one is headed. Vote early and often!

Storm flushes out Tompkins Square Park rats

Per EV Grieve reader Jamie: "Past Tompkins...teeming with rats...pretty unbelievable. It looks like the whole ground was moving."

And from @gaminette — "There are dozens of not dead rats in Tompkins Square Park - they came thru #Irene just fine."

A Tompkins Square Park rat(s) update

[Reader submitted dead rat photo]

An EV Grieve reader asked city parks officials what they were doing about the rat overpopulation in Tompkins Square Park. Here is part of the response that the reader received via email:

1). Parks has removed the garbage bags from the rats.

2). All garbage bags, once removed from garbage drums, are taken off-site. Bags are not left overnight in the park.

3). Parks is working with a garbage bag distributer MINT-X and using their rat-resistant garbage bags in the park.

4). Parks are using rat snap traps inside plastic boxes to kill rats, without the use of posions.

5). Tompkins Square Park has a red tailed hawk that frequents the park regularly, so Parks does not use rat poison.

6). Parks has reached out to the organizations that feed the hungry and homeless in Tompkins Square Park to minimize littering of food in the park.

7). Park night Crew cleans every night to sweep up around garbage drums, removes food from the ground and in garden beds, and removed garbage bags from the park.

8). Undesirable plants and shrubs, that offer rats harbage have been reoved from the park.

9). Parks is continuing to use non-poisonous methods to reduce rat population in the park.

Per the reader: "I think they deserve some credit ... also, it shows that going through the 'proper channels' ocassionaly works!"

We also hear that 20 more of the snap traps are on the way... Plus, well, there's some talk that the deluge on Sunday may drown a few of the rats...

Bob Arihood notes that "Inside Edition" returned to film in the Park... and, once again, the rats didn't disappoint. Read his report here.

Unlikely foes joining forces for Tompkins Square Park domination?

More rat baiting stations arrive in Tompkins Square Park

Yesterday, we noted the arrival of a rat-baiitng station in Tompkins Square Park ... right near the playground at Avenue A and Ninth Street... newly appointed EV Grieve TSP Ratstravaganza correspondent Bobby Williams noticed six later in the day...

Meanwhile, no word yet if Ramy Issac will design additional floors for the rat-baiting stations.

Noting some defensive rat tactics in Tompkins Square Park

A few items to note about the defensive tactics vs. the Tompkins Square Park rat population...

For starters, Park workers yesterday removed the decorative trash can wraps that prompted critter-friendly pile ups...

Before!

Now!

We also noticed the presence of a lone baiting station adjacent to the playground on Avenue A at Ninth Street...

There may be others, but we didn't spot them...

We previously noted the arrival of "feed a pigeon, breed a rat" signs ... Will any of this help head off another Media Ratstravaganza?

The Tompkins Square Park Media Ratstravaganza Part 2 this September?

In his Villager column this week, Scoopy has a statement from the Tompkins Square Park & Playgrounds Parents’ Association (TSP3A). The comment reads, in part:

If they do not have an alternative plan, or think what they have done so far, like putting in rat-proof garbage cans and laying down wood chips, is an acceptable alternative, they are mistaken. The Parks Department can rest assured that around mid-September, TSP3A will be inviting the entire New York City media back to our playground, with their cameras in tow, to see how the Parks Department has done. If they have eliminated the rats, it will be a great day for the Parks Department and for our children. But if the situation is largely unchanged, then they will be in for a second round of embarrassment courtesy of every newspaper, television and radio news program, and news blog in the New York City metropolitan area.

Woo! Blogs!

Oh, anyway. Read all the statement (and the rest of Scoopy) here. And! For the record, Bob Arihood coined the termed TSP Ratstravaganza ... we're not sure about the licensing agreement...

The elusive Tompkins Square Park white rat becoming less elusive

Yesterday, Bob Arihood had night-time photos of the elusive Tompkins Square Park white rat ... Apparently, the fame is going to the white rat's head, as he or she decided to frolic in the daytime yesterday near the playground at Ninth Street and Avenue A... as these photos by EV Grieve reader Judy show...

Someone get this thing a Twitter account already!

Tompkins Square Park, now with 'feed a pigeon, breed a rat' signs

Back on Friday, we mentioned the "feed a pigeon, breed a rat" signs that some other city parks have ... seeing as we have the likes of The Pigeon Lady hereabouts, we thought similar signs might be nice in Tompkins Square Park too...

Well! Look what workers out up in the last day or so ...

So when can we get the T-shirts, hats, buttons and iPhone cases?

Meanwhile, a few of the old trashcans have returned in the Park...

How about a few of these for Tompkins Square Park?

A reader passed along this photo taken in Stuyvesant Square Park. It likely wouldn't stop the likes of the notorious Pigeon Lady, but, perhaps, the sign would give other people pause.

Meanwhile, The Villager weighs in with an editorial on the TSP Ratstravaganza in this week's edition. You can read that here.

On the menu tonight for the rats: Chili

EV Grieve reader AC noted this on Avenue A at Seventh Street... Presumably leftover from one of the charitable organizations who provide a much-needed service to those in need... Unfortunately, these kinds of things can happen afterwards...

Checking in on the TSP Ratstravaganza

Been a few weeks since that rat-fueled media frenzy in Tompkins Square Park ... As we've noted, the Park is well-managed by some devoted workers.

Among other things, workers installed lids on the trash cans to prevent the rats (and other various critters) to get inside... A good idea in theory... However, people don't seem to have the grasp of the concept, as these photos from Saturday morning show...

Several of the trash cans were actually empty. Just people couldn't be bothered to push the trash through the lids.

Also, people (or at least The Pigeon Lady) continue to dump like 50 pounds of stale bread exactly in the location where the rats have been seen swarming near the playground off Avenue off Ninth Street... Saturday morning...

...and Saturday night, this photo by Sean Kennedy shows 18 rats on the prowl... (rats are highlighted for your viewing ease)

Because we haven't talked about rats in Tompkins Square Park in about, oh, 48 hours

This photo taken by Bobby Williams yesterday shows some of the measures workers are taking to help curb the rat population in Tompkins Square Park...

While these lids are a fine idea in the Park ... the rats don't have too far to go to find other food sources...

Of course, crossing Avenue A can be a little dicey.

Meanwhile, the repercussions from the TSP Ratstravaganza are being felt far and wide — even keeping Florida residents up at night! After reading the account of the rats in Tompkins Square Park, blogger Julie Ryan Evans wrote on The Stir: "I'm not sure I'll be able to go to any park in the near future without being on the lookout for rats, and I don't live anywhere near New York. I'm not sure I'll even be able to sleep."

For further reading:
Bob Arihood has written about the use of rat poisons in the Park.

About Ratstravaganza!

So what started as some parents getting upset that rats are overtaking the Ninth Street playground in Tompkins Square Park has become a full-on media frenzy. ABC, NBC, Fox and NY1 have all filed reports. (Hello, CBS?)

Of course, all this media hysteria is great fun to watch.

But! Bob Arihood makes some good points in a post at Neither More Nor Less. For starters: "From what we've seen over the last 4 or 5 years that [rat] population hasn't changed all that much."

And as he points out, some of the criticism of the Parks Department is misdirected. A lot of people simply leave bags of food/trash lying around. Like this one from yesterday that contained some pretty tasty lo-mein.

And perhaps people such as The Pigeon Lady shouldn't be pulling up the chuckwagon for the pigeons. Maybe there should be a 10-pound limit? All the leftovers become rat food.

In any event, Bob has some sensible ideas. You can read his post here.

Also, if you are interested in getting involved with the Tompkins Square Park & Playgrounds Parents’ Association ... they have a Facebook page.

Finally, you know what will likely happen... with rat fear at an all-time high, pranksters will begin dressing up as rats to push people over the edge. PANIC. Just like those no good kids who pulled a fake shark prank in "Jaws."
