Your chance to weigh in on CB3/SLA polices

From the EV Grieve in box...
SLA Policy Hearing

Wednesday, March 28 at 6:30 pm — Community Board 3 Office, 59 East 4th Street (btwn 2nd Ave & Bowery)

• Resolution area changes regarding hours for beer/wine applicants
• Request for SLA rule change to have licensees notify community boards when applying for changes in stipulations or other Method of Operation changes

CB3 has been working for over a year to revise its policies regarding recommendations for liquor licenses. Some of the recommendations impact “resolution areas”—those areas considered oversaturated and for which residents have requested that CB 3 not recommend new licenses. (To find areas, go here.)

We are specifically looking at whether applications for beer/wine licenses should be exempted from resolution area policy if the business is primarily a daytime business that will close by a yet-undefined early hour. Since Community Board 3 created the original policy with community input, it is essential that we hear from you regarding any changes. This meeting will also provide an opportunity to explain some criteria the SLA uses in making decisions regarding full liquor and beer/wine licenses and how other criteria, such as zoning, impacts the decisions.

Please attend this meeting March 28 at the Community Board office (59 East 4th Street) to share your thoughts and have an opportunity to ask questions.

A Bleecker Bob's update

[Dave on 7th]

The folks at Bleecker's Bob's continue to look for a new space... The longtime record shop is closing on West Third Street at the end of April... they've been scouting locations in the East Village and Lower East Side...

They looked at a space on Avenue A at Fifth Street but, according to a Facebook posting, "the landlord cared too much about personal income (which if you've ever worked at a record store is almost nothing) and wanted a person rather then the company to sign a lease so that's a NO GO!"

And:

"Unfortunately it looks like we're running out of time."

However, last night, Bleecker Bob's updated the store's Facebook page... They have a few more spaces to check out. There's also talk about a benefit show the last week of April.

"Please email us here if you'd like to help out with the benefit or if you see any available storefronts. Your continued support is greatly appreciated."

[UPDATED] Let's help Bleecker Bob's find space in the East Village

You've had your last Blockbuster night on East Houston

Last night, we stopped by the Blockbuster on East Houston to return our overdue copy of "Battlefield Earth: A Saga of the Year 3000" and ...

Kidding, we've never been a Blockbuster member... Just noting that the space is empty now here in the Red Square shops between Avenue A and Avenue B on East Houston ... Blockbuster closed after Sunday night... and workers quickly cleared out the space...

Someone even left a "store closed forever" sign and a smiley face made of tape, perhaps as a thank you for years of renting ... "Ballistic: Ecks vs. Sever" and "Superbabies: Baby Geniuses 2."

The space remains for rent, as we noted here. Make as well start a rumor about what's opening here...

This is what 240 E. Sixth St. looked like on March 25, 2012

This year, we'll post photos like this of various buildings, streetscenes, etc., to capture them as they looked at this time and place... The photos may not be the most telling now, but they likely will be one day...

There's a Save Kate's Joint party tomorrow night

As you probably know, things aren't looking good for Kate's Joint, the 16-year-old vegetarian restaurant and bar on Avenue B at East Fourth Street. Per the indiegogo campaign under way:

Kate is currently in arrears with the landlord. Eviction notices have been sent, court appearances have been made, and if a substantial amount of money is not raised by April 11th, the next court date, the doors will shut permanently at Kate’s Joint.

Tomorrow night, a group of fans and neighbors are planning on throwing a party of sorts there starting at 7 (and going till midnight or so).

According to the Facebook events page (where you can RSVP and what not):

Come by on Wednesday for by a wide variety of healthy meals, just a couple drinks, or the only veggie wings to land on NY Mag's Top 5 Hot Wings list! It might be kind of fun to pack the restaurant with new and old friends for a night.

If you can't make it Wednesday, please thinking about having a meal there soon!

One of the party planners told us, "I live on the block and want to put up as much of a fight as possible. Losing Kate's will make me feel like there is just not hope for the hood..."

Life Cafe owner Kathy Kirkpatrick on why the Life trademark is for sale

[At the former Life Cafe Sunday]

Don't be surprised one day if you come across a Life Cafe — here or elsewhere in the country. In an email, Kathy Kirkpatrick (aka Kathy Life), president of Life Cafe Inc., said that she is retiring and selling the trademark to her 30-year-old Cafe.

As you'll recall, Life Cafe abruptly closed "until further notice" last Sept. 11, as we first reported. Kirkpatrick said that she'd stay closed until the landlords completed long overdue repairs. That closure became permanent after the two landlords decided to cut the cafe in two, with 9th Street Espresso moving next door into one of the spaces, as The Villager first reported.

"It's been a full life and it's now time to move on and retire. It's been my dream to have someone else take the legacy of the Cafe on to the next level, but that opportunity to do so at that location was suffocated," said Kirkpatrick, who's working on a book titled "FIGHTING FOR LIFE: the Life and Death of Life Cafe." "Since 2008 I struggled to make the renaissance happen but the two landlords obstructed my every move."

She continued.

"Life Cafe was to me and to most others more than just a cafe. That is why I put the brand out there in the expectation that someone would carry on the Cafe in the tradition of the original. It's a brand that will work throughout the U.S. and the world (in fact it's known worldwide). I have always had international patrons coming, making special trips to the East Village just to eat and drink at Life and connect with a piece of New York history."

Here's part of the ad that she has placed on Craigslist:

The Trademark for Life Café, the East Village, New York restaurant/bar immortalized in the Pulitzer Prize winning Broadway musical RENT is for sale.

Included with the trademark is:

-- Trademark:
International Class 042, Restaurant Services
International Class 021, Tableware, namely, cups
International Class 025, T-Shirts
-- Domain name, website, code
-- Copyright of marketing collateral
-- Story/history/NYC origins/RENT connection

Owner willing to build into a deal an offer to have John Sunderland, creative designer and graphic designer of the current designs/logos/art, etc. on retainer to continue to produce visual marks in the style of the IP ...

She said that because fans of "Rent" no longer have a place to visit in the East Village, she is soon launching a website — RENTheadRegisters.com. She described it as "a virtual place of pilgrimage like the Cafe was." The site will be based on the original eight physical RENThead Registers that Life began in 2008 for fans to share messages.

"We're recreating each volume virtually on the site for people to read," said Kirkpatrick, who reported brisk business at the Life outpost in Bushwick. "And we're inviting people to submit more messages, which will be entered into new virtual volumes. We've estimated there are about 10,000 messages in the first eight volumes, and expect that number to grow."

"In that sense, in the connection to 'Rent,' Life Cafe will go on."

Death & Co., Jane's Sweet Buns part of print ad for new worst TV show ever made

We spotted this ad in this week's issue of New York magazine... it's for a new ABC series called "Don't Trust the B---- in Apt. 23." Apparently the show is about "the hilariously unpredictable antics of Chloe... the ultimate party girl with a heart of tarnished gold."

We then follow along as "Chloe navigates gritty city life with her street-smart solutions to a variety of everyday issues."

And the ad includes a relatively random list of local spots, such as Death & Co., perfect if you "need to console a friend after a bad breakup (when said breakup happened because you hooked up with her boyfriend)."

The hijinks continue at Saxon + Parole on the Bowery... because you spent all your money on shoes, you can't afford rent...but you want to check out a new restaurant... Advice? "Only go out with finance types so you can enjoy a delicious meal at that new must-check-out restaurant compliments of Mr. Big Shot."

And Jane's Sweet Buns makes an appearance...

If this still hasn't turned you off, then enjoy the trailer...

Not sure how ABC selected these places for inclusion in the print ad ... There is a notice reading "No celebrity endorsement implied." Probably a good thing.

There are a lot of rats around here, rat report says

[File photo: Today they're climbing a tree, tomorrow, they'll be driving the M14A. By Bobby Williams]

DNAinfo posted news today on a survey from the city's Department of Health revealing that Inwood and Washington Heights have the highest reported rate of rat infestation in Manhattan ... with an 11.6 percent rat infestation rate in 2011.

Meanwhile, according to Department of Mental Health and Hygiene records, the Lower East Side and East Village are No. 2 with an 11.4 percent rat infestation rate in 2011 ... based on 492 reported rat infestations verified out of 4,279 inspections.

And here's handy-dandy chart via DNAinfo showing how other neighborhoods fare ...

Occupy Union Square

At Runnin' Scared today, Nick Pinto checks in on the new encampment for the Occupy movement at Union Square.

For the occupiers, Union Square offers a number of advantages over Zuccotti Park, where they spent last fall. It's much larger, with an open layout in a heavily trafficked location that lends itself to street outreach. Union Square also boasts a proud history as the center of labor, communist and anarchist rallies going back more than a century.

He also discusses the NYPD "fielding massive numbers to push the occupation out of the park each night, erecting metal barricades around the park's southern border and lining them with double ranks of officers from midnight until the park re-opens at 6 a.m."

Read the whole piece here.
