Let me get all Metropolitan Diary on you
I was walking in the 30s today for some reason...I got stuck behind a slow-moving tourist dad and his young son (7? 8?)...They were taking their time looking here and there. I wasn't paying too much attention. But it was clear they couldn't find what they were looking for.
The boy said, "But I thought you knew the city."
The dad shook his head sadly, "Not anymore I don't."
Turned out he used to live here.

happens to me all the time. Walking down some block I thought I knew, and BAM! scaffolding announces a building being razed and I think, Oh no, not that bar/restaurant/laundromat/candy store/drug store/shoe repair/tenement set to disappear!
ReplyDeleteYeah... Not that I have reaper skills like some of my like-minded friends...But! I've walked by places that look like their days could be numbered...I make a mental note to return...and when I do, it's gone.
ReplyDeleteI saw those exact same father and son today in the '30s because I too was walking there for some reason, but the dad said, while shaking a subway map, "Nothing is in the same place as where I left it." Then I rode the Path train for the first time and got off the wrong stop.
ReplyDeleteOk this is bothering me - did you see those people at 34th & 6th between 11:30am-12:00pm on Tuesday? I think we must have been standing next to each other.
ReplyDeleteWeird!
ReplyDeleteI was behind them on 32nd Street between Park and Madison around 10:50 yesterday morning...they kept going west on 32nd and I hung a right on Madison...(Then I doubled back to take a photo of a new antique shop that replaces an old copier store!)
So it's very likely it was them...they seemed to be looking for something.
