Rounding the corner on 11th Street at First Avenue yesterday, I saw a disturbing site...
Something Sweet is closed for a "personal matter." And the shop, open now some 30 years, is already missed...

Not a good sign at all that you are posting this today. I noticed this several days ago, and if they aren't opened yet... oh the sugar corner of the neighborhood, what with Venieros and DeRobertis right there, will be greatly diminished.
ReplyDeleteUgh, not good news, Jill... I figured they had been closed for a few days given all the notes from their shoppers...
ReplyDeleteAw. Seems not like their summer vacation (usually in late summer, 2 week+)... Cathy hasn't been very well recently, I wonder if it's her health condition. We always have their cakes on special occasions, and I promised my son he'll get a "Big Ladybug Cake" for his birthday this year. I hope they open again soon....
ReplyDeleteI snapped a photo a few days before it closed--and Kathy gave me a smile like always. Her son is now running the business. I keep the faith that she will reopen soon. I love the vanilla mousse with the strawberries and the homemade chocolates rock.
ReplyDeleteI like Something Sweet but I'm puzzled by the 30 years comment. Didn't the ownership/name change at least once in the last 10 years?

ReplyDeleteThanks for the comment, anon 2:55 -- you very well may be right. I was going with some information that a regular passed along...
ReplyDeleteYes, they’ve most definitely have been there thirty years –and I’ve regularly been enjoying their wonderful apple turnovers since discovering the place in 1981.
ReplyDeleteBack in the day, 'Something Sweet' was called 'Black Forest Pastry Shop'. They changed the name around fifteen years ago (can it really be that long, now?) when Peter, the longtime pastry chef, retired; some of the old specialties that appealed to the few remaining Germans in the neighborhood –such as the eponymous (and delicious) Black Forest Cake, and the Sacher Torte were withdrawn, and other baked treats substituted; hence the need to change the name of the shop.
Gee, I sure hope everything’s OK with Kathy and her family. I can’t do without this place! Please keep us updated...
Thanks for the background, since1979. I, too, hope everything is OK here...haven't walked by since Sunday... will update soon.
ReplyDeleteYou might have noticed but
ReplyDeletejust to let you know...Something Sweet is back. I walked by today, Cathy wasn't there but the son was.
SOmething Sweet is closed again! in 2012!!! I came back from new years holidays and it has been closed for the month and no neighboring businesses have told me why. no notes. the website and phone number is down... I am deeply grieved at the loss of this kind neighborly shop. Cathy is a quiet pillar of the neighborhood. I hope the family is OK . If anyone knows anything I hope they will post
