As the Times reports:
[F]or the month of January, Show Media, a Las Vegas company that owns about half the cones adorning New York City’s taxis, has decided to give commerce a rest. Instead, roughly 500 cabs will display a different kind of message: artworks by Shirin Neshat, Alex Katz and Yoko Ono.
The project is costing Show Media about $100,000 in lost revenue, but John Amato, one of Show’s owners and a contemporary-art fan, said: “I thought it was time to take a step back. January’s a slow month. I could have cut my rates but instead I decided to hit the mute button and give something back to the city.”
Uh, gee, thanks?
fuck you with your ungrateful "gee thanks".
ReplyDeletethat's really awesome and selfless.
Well, OK. It will be a nice change of pace from reality shows and Hooters. I'd also like to see unknown/emerging artists get the opportunity to display their art...rather than, say, Yoko Ono, who already has plenty of avenues for her work.
ReplyDeleteThey will run into the problem that serious art today just isn't that good, maybe one step up from strip club advertisements, but I agree with the first comment, its a really cool gesture.
ReplyDeleteIts a mystery to me why commercial establishments stay open during slow periods (for example, January). Aren't the operating costs higher than the revenue. Give the staff a break. I don't think the clients would miss a bar or restaurant closing for a month as long as it was predictable and announced in advance.
Ditto on the fuck you, EVG. The man is doing a mitzvah for us, those him some G'tude.
