The signs at East Hardware at 79 Third Avenue near 11th Street say that the store is moving from its ground floor space in the Third North NYU dorm...
When I asked where they were moving, I received a blank look. Pause. "We're not. We're just leaving this location." Rent hike. I said that I was sorry to hear this. I was met with a shrug of the shoulders. "That's life."
Yes, especially here.
I walk into that place thinking "there's no way they'll have what I need," then they invariably produce the piece from their chaos of dusty cubby holes. Hope they're not going too far...
ReplyDeleteYeah, they've surprised me like like too, Pinhead. It doesn't have that old-school hardware store feel that I usually like. But I've always found what I needed there. I have the feeling they're simply closing for the time being... One of those moving sales that may be more like a closing sale. Same thing happened at Mikey's pet shop on Seventh St. He said they were moving, but, in reality, he didn't have another storefront lined up.
ReplyDeleteThis REALLY sucks. I live around the corner and go here for all my random home improvement needs. They do tend to have whatever you're looking for, and for cheap. Plus delivered with no-nonsense Eastern European curmudgeony charm.
ReplyDeleteAnother one bites the dust. Ugh.
wonder which yogurt chain will move in?
ReplyDeleteI love East Hardware. They really *do* have what I need, when I need it. I will be very sorry to see it go.
ReplyDeletethat's terrible. they were always friendly, they're the only place around that will cut wood for you and they let you come in with your dog, no problem. i can't believe the uproar over nyu kicking out the crappy met on second avenue compared to no reaction to losing this real gem.
