What's coming to The Telephone Bar space? Some fratty debauchery, perhaps

At the December CB3/SLA meeting, the following item was on the agenda:

Mitchell Banchik, 149 2nd Ave (currently Telephone Bar); full liquor, transfer ownership

Mitchell Banchik owns such bars as Gin Mill, Jake’s Dilemma and Down The Hatch in the Village.

Have you seen Down the Hatch's slogan?

  1. Sorry about this, but it's qualified. The sad part is TB has some of the best food anywhere. The chefs care about the food and it tastes like it. Incredible specials and we've had some wonderful holiday dinners there. Started going there at least 15 years ago.

On the other hand, I can't tell you how many times in recent years we've gone in, heard the too-loud muzak and the noisy fratboy/sports bar crowd and turned right around and walked out. Hopefully, the chefs will find a better place to work nearby.

  2. ...the food has been very hit or miss over the last few years. the bartenders and their personal music collections being played have always been something for me to look forward to at the Telephone. The place has lost it's footing due to the owner not knowing how to pick a general manager to run the place. Oh well. I will miss this bar.
