Mini Thai Cafe and Avenue A Sushi are still closed on Avenue A between Sixth Street and Seventh Street...
...though there's a note on Avenue A Sushi...
Of course, this doesn't make it clear if the place is opening as something different.... or the same restaurant...
My very first conversation about gentrification is still clear in my mind as the concept was a revelation to me. It was soon after Avenue A Sushi opened (1989 or 90??). The argument was that the first crack in the neighborhood's decaying veneer was sushi on Avenue A ("yuppie food"). The result would be high rents and an even higher cost of living that would drive artists away.
ReplyDeleteAt the time I didn't understand it. I thought, how can sushi hurt? I love sushi. I understand it now.
My lack of understanding then mirrors what I hear from those new to the city - why fight progress; shiny new things are good.
It takes a lifetime for it to make sense, and then it is too late.
Does this make 42 empty storefronts along Avenue A, between Houston and 14th Street?
ReplyDeleteSeems like that many, Chris! That fancypants salon on A near Second moved away...ditto for Monk on A near 10th... and with these two... wow.
