Speakeasy and Mardi Gras-themed bar coming to Avenue B

Grub Street has the details on a new venture coming to 25 Avenue B near Second Street ... in the former Rehab/Midway space (and, of course, Save the Robots). Per Grub Street: The owners hope to open the "'Bourbon. Beer. Rock'–themed Idle Hands in the basement space around Memorial Day (pending liquor-license approval), while upstairs a group with ties to Thunder Jackson’s and Point Break will open Billy Hurricanes, a Mardi Gras–themed bar trafficking in frozen daiquiris, Cajun food, and a signature drink that will be limited to two per person." I can smell the vomit already!

Not familiar with Thunder Jackson's? Here is a screenshot from their home page.

  2. CB3 denied a transfer last night for Zerza, a quiet Moroccan restaurant, to relocate to 40 Avenue B. And they don't have a bar and would close at 11:30. Not sure how they would OK this...

  3. That is way too close for comfort. Yikes!

  4. This is horrible. Who was that nice Irish guy at the CB3 meeting last night? Couldn't he and the rest of the board/community do something to avert this disaster?

Hard to say, really. Their denial of a transfer to 40 Avenue B surprised me. By all accounts, this is a quiet little Moroccan eatery. Someone on the Board mentioned the space's tainted history or something. I'd say 25 Avenue B falls into the same category. Given how organized neighbors were about Le Souk, I imagine they'd be a lot of opposition to a Mardi Gras-themed bar opening here.

  8. The neighbors in this area are really well organized and Frank, the nice Irish guy, appears to be well respected when he gives his opinion against opening another bar, which is always his opinion, and for which he is always correct. Le Souk and Carneval left a chip on this area's shoulder that hopefully will take a long time to live down.

My word verification is bongslur. How did it know?

  9. @anon. Ha! Bongslur would be a great band name.

Seriously, though... there is an active liquor license at 25 Avenue B (until September 2011)... so likely the new owners will be seekig a transfer, which might be easier to have happen since it already exists....
