The oil zone

Around 6 this evening, protesters took to the BP gas station on Lafayette and Houston ... (which was conveniently closed in advance) to condemn BP's involvement in the Gulf of Mexico oil disaster (read more about the protest here via Gothamist) .... here are a few photos from the protest ... (BoweryBoogie was also there... you can read his report here.)

  1. Why did they protest at a gas station instead of BP offices (I believe BP has offices in midtown)? This sounds like a great way to punish a franchisee who had nothing to do with the oil spill.

  2. @anonymous: agreed. also, a great way to have folks take you seriously: dress up like a mermaid. i feel protests against serious issues that look like a gay pride parade don't really end up helping your case. save the festive costumes for festive occasions. seriously.

  3. the point was to deter cars from entering the station and buying gas. i'm sure this also made a strong visual impact on many people, and that's what they were trying to do, make people think.
