ReplyDeleteIn 1980 the then-owner of 500 East 11th Street, on the SE corner of Avenue A, gut-rehabbed the building and was renting big one bedrooms for $300/month. We were all outraged at such blatant highway robbery...

the guy whio owns the building occupied by Doc Hollidays bought it for $1.00 U.S.
ReplyDeletethe sad truth is that we are losing our communities - our neighborhoods - ourneighbors - to landlord greed. and as bad as it is for residential tenants commercial tenants have aabsolutely NO protections except for those spelled out in the lease. once that lease runs out it's the wild wild west and the landlord can charge whatever s/he wants. sometimes the courts will give some time for a move, but not always. and tenants in buildings with less than 6 residential units have very few rights, and none for a lease renewal.
